ANKARA — Turkey aims to reach $1.6 billion in arms exports this year, up 14.3 percent from $1.4 billion in 2013, Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz said Aug. 1.

Turkey’s top export markets are the United States, Gulf countries and Turkic republics in Central Asia.

But Yilmaz said that the country’s manufacturers now targeted South America and Africa.

“Our defense industry aims to secure contract soon in South American and African markets,” Yilmaz said in a written statement in response to a parliamentary inquiry.

Turkey’s defense procurement office, the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM) has offices in Washington; Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Brussels, Belgium; and Astana, Kazakhstan, to coordinate arms exports to these countries.

Yilmaz said that SSM would soon open offices in South America, Africa and Southeast Asia.
