The French Army is moving ahead with its €5 billion Scorpion modernisation programme by announcing deals for Nexter, Renault Trucks Defense and Thales to develop two armoured vehicles worth almost €752 million.
Work on the Griffon, a six-wheel troop carrier VBMR, and a six-wheel EBRC combat vehicle, called Jaguar, will begin following feasibility studies ahead of the programme's launch.
The contract covers all phases of an armament program, from development to unit logistical support through the qualification and production of systems with Nexter working on the chassis, Renault on the engine, and Thales on the electronics systems.
Almost 2,000 vehicles, and all associated logistical support equipment, will be delivered to forces from 2018.
“It is almost €752 million I am committing today…to cover the development work for these two vehicles,” French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told reporters.
