Tel Aviv - Elbit Systems' Elop division is working on developing new versions of its Music countermeasures system to protect different types of helicopters.

The Music-A countermeasures system for large military aircraft disrupts an incoming missile by transmitting a laser beam at its seeker, causing the threat to veer off course. Another version called C-Music has also been produced for civilian aircraft.

An Elop source has confirmed the company is also pursuing efforts to develop at least two new versions, suitable for protecting both small and heavy helicopters.

The number of shoulder-launched missiles in the hands of terror organisations has spurred renewed interest in countering the threat posed by such systems.

Sources said an estimated 20,000 such missiles disappeared from military storage facilities during the recent fighting in Libya.
