ITT Exelis has been awarded a $6 million contract by the Japan Ground Self Defense Force to supply GammaCam imaging systems to support the country’s recovery efforts.
The GammaCam, a portable imaging system, enables precise detection and analysis of radiation by showing concentrations of gamma rays superimposed on a video image. The system can be remotely operated and controlled, ensuring minimal risk to operators. Consisting of a sensor head and a portable PC-compatible computer, the GammaCam is self-contained, so all data analysis, data storage, and all aspects of sensor operation are controlled from the computer.
TEPCO, the Fukushima nuclear plant operator, purchased GammaCam systems from Exelis in the wake of the March 2011 earthquake that heavily damaged its facilities. Because of the GammaCam’s demonstrated effectiveness in detecting and analyzing radiation levels precisely and efficiently, the Japan Ground Self Defense Force has decided to use this same Exelis technology for its efforts.
“We’re honored to be supporting the Japan Ground Self Defense Force with a system that makes invisible gamma rays visible,” said Rich Sorelle, vice president and general manager of the Exelis integrated electronic warfare systems business. “Our close relationship with the customer, combined with the best available equipment, will help speed recovery efforts, minimize radiation exposure for recovery workers, and significantly reduce risk radiation exposure to all nearby.”
The GammaCam’s unique architecture results in a small, lightweight and adaptable system, allowing for easy set-up, configuration and portability for a wide range of applications. It is capable of operating in high background fields without requiring the use of heavy and bulky shielding.
