The Russian Navy started 2013 with several major announcements regarding its future equipment plans, including the construction of more than 130 new vessels by 2016, according to reports in Jane’s and the Voice of Russia media outlet. The first of the announcements in early January was for a promised 18 new surface combatants, 30 “special purpose and counter-subversion vessels”, and six submarines of various unspecified types, while a few days later Russia unveiled plans for 80 support vessels, including tugs and search-and-rescue craft.
