On 26 August 2011, based on the proposal of the Council of State, the President of the Republic has decided to appoint Director of the Centre for Military Medicine, Doctor of Medicine, Colonel (Med.) Simo Siitonen to the post of Surgeon General of the Finnish Defence Forces from 1 November 2011 - 31 October 2016.
Colonel (Med.) Simo Siitonen has served as the Director of the Centre for Military Medicine since 2010. His earlier appointments include Chief Physician and Administrative Chief Medical Officer at the Defence Command, Chief Flight Surgeon of the Air Force, Chief Physician, Specialist (MD) and Medical Researcher at the Central Military Hospital and Military Physician and Physician at the Karelia Air Command. He received the Degree of Doctor of Medicine in the year 2000 at the University of Kuopio (Effects of In-flight Gz acceleration on Military Aviators Using Modern Anti-G Garments).
He has also completed studies in the United States and Great Britain. Siitonen was promoted to the rank of Colonel (Med.) in 2009.
