VALLETTA - A US F-16 fighter jet taking part in NATO-led air strikes on Libya was forced to make an emergency landing in Malta on Wednesday after running low on fuel, civil aviation authorities said.

This is the 11th plane to land in neutral Malta since operations over Libya started in March. The US plane was flying from the military base in Sicily.

Four pairs of French air force aircraft and two Danish Air Force F-16s diverted to Malta for refuelling or following other technical faults earlier.

Malta has strong contacts with Libya and had remained cautious on the conflict but earlier this month it recognised the National Transitional Council (NTC) as "the sole legitimate interlocutor of the Libyan people."
