Nouvelle-Caledonie : Challenge de tir AASAM 2014

Du 26 avril au 19 mai, les forces armées de la Nouvelle-Calédonie (FANC) ont représenté la France à l’Australian Army Skill At Arms Meeting (AASAM) 2014, challenge de tir international, dans la région de Melbourne, au sud de l’Australie.

 

L’équipe française interarmées et interministérielle comprend douze tireurs FAMAS, PA ainsi que MINIMI. Elle est emmenée par le maître de tir du régiment d’infanterie de marine du Pacifique (RIMaP). Elle a participé aux 31 matchs internationaux programmés lors de ce challenge sur le camp de Puckapunyal, à 100 km au nord de Melbourne.

 

Assez méconnues en France, ces compétitions de tir de combat en condition de stress sont une excellente opportunité, pour les nations participantes, de faire évoluer leurs techniques opérationnelles de tir en les confrontant à celles des armées des autres nations. Outre l’Australie, des challenges de ce type sont organisés également au Royaume-Uni,  au Canada et à Brunei. Les FANC participent tous les ans à l’AASAM et pour 2014, l’équipe en net progrès s’est hissée à la huitième place du classement.

 

Les FANC constituent le point d’appui central du « théâtre Pacifique» avec un dispositif interarmées centré sur un groupement tactique interarmes (GTIA) et les moyens de projection associés. Avec les Forces armées en Polynésie Française (FAPF), dispositif interarmées à dominante maritime, les FANC ont pour principale mission d’assurer la souveraineté de la France dans leur zone de responsabilité, d’animer la coopération régionale et d’entretenir des relations privilégiées avec l’ensemble des pays riverains de la zone pacifique. Dans le cadre de leur mission, les FANC engagent régulièrement leurs moyens pour des opérations d’aide aux populations, en appui des autres services de l’Etat

Fifth Australia-Japan Foreign and Defence Ministerial Consultations

Developments in regional and international security and ways to deepen bilateral defence and security cooperation will be the focus of the fifth Australia-Japan Foreign and Defence Ministerial (2+2) Consultations this week.

 

Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, and Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon David Johnston will travel to Tokyo to meet their counterparts and build on Prime Minister Abbott’s recent successful visit to Japan where leaders agreed to elevate the strategic partnership.

 

Australia and Japan share strategic interests in regional peace and stability, underpinned by common democratic values and a commitment to the rule of law.

 

Ministers are expected to agree on the substantive conclusion to negotiations on a Defence Science, Technology and Materiel Agreement, announced during Prime Minister Abbott’s visit. The Agreement will allow Australia and Japan to jointly develop defence technologies, establishing a basis to deepen defence cooperation.

 

On 12-13 June, Minister Bishop will meet Foreign Minister Kishida and other senior Japanese ministers, Diet members and academics to discuss international and bilateral developments and Australia’s signature foreign policy initiative, the New Colombo Plan. She will meet Gender Diversity Minister Mori to discuss Japan’s policies to promote the empowerment of women. Minister Bishop will also visit the Kansai region, meeting senior business leaders to promote the tangible benefits of the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement.

 

Minister Johnston will also meet Japanese Defence Minister Onodera separately to discuss progress in bilateral defence engagement in areas including logistics cooperation, exercises and training, and peacekeeping and disaster relief responses.

An advanced training simulator, that will be used to train the future Navy crew of Australia’s new Hobart Class destroyers, is up and running at the Maritime Skills Centre at Techport in South Australia.

The system - called the Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) Training Simulator - is part of a suite of simulators and other technologies that will be used to train the future Royal Australian Navy crews of the new guided missile destroyers. 

AWD Alliance CEO Rod Equid said it is great to see the first Hobart Class training system in place.   “It is a leap forward in technology and is on a scale never seen before for Royal Australian Navy warships or submarines,” Mr Equid said.

The IPMS is the next generation of ship management systems which has a software application that allows for real-time digital control of the ship’s functions, such as propulsion, steering and damage control. 

Course delivery has started for the AWD Alliance Test and Activation Group. Training for the first Navy crew for Ship 1 Hobart will start next year at the centre’s purpose-building training facility.

Training conducted this year will provide key members of the AWD Alliance with detailed information on the capability of the ship’s systems and develop the skills of the instructors prior to training future crew.   

The IPMS Training Simulator uses a variety of operating systems, applications and software to allow trainees to simulate the experience of being onboard the ship and having control of the ship’s systems including propulsion, steering, electrical distribution, auxiliaries and damage control.

“The simulation training system will be used to train crew on how to operate the ship using consoles that will be located throughout the ship, including those located on the bridge.” Mr Equid said.

All future crew members will need IPMS training before going to sea onboard one of the three new destroyers being built for the Navy by the AWD Alliance.

Training is also underway in the United States for the AWD Alliance Integrated Test Team (ITT), industry and future Navy crews to operate and maintain the highly complex combat system – including the Aegis Weapon System and Aegis Combat System Elements.  The training program is being delivered by the United States Navy through the Foreign Military Sales program and will continue over the next 18 months. More than 25 courses are being provided to a mix of Alliance and Navy personnel.

“The AWD Project is progressing with all Ship 1 hull blocks consolidated and work is now focussed on the next stage of systems integration including the load out of the combat system.  It is exciting to also be turning our attention to training people on how to use the equipment and operate the ship,” Mr Equid said.

The Alliance is made up of the Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO) representing the Australian Government, ASC as the lead shipbuilder and Raytheon Australia as the mission systems integrator.

Australian DoD extends Hawkei testing and evaluation programme

The Australian Department of Defence (DoD) has extended the developmental testing and evaluation of the six Thales Hawkei prototype vehicles and trailer that were acquired under the Australian Defence Forces' (ADF) project LAND 121 phase 4 programme.

 

An unnamed DoD spokesperson was quoted by Shephard as saying that the risk-reduction activity will 'further reduce risk prior to a second-pass consideration by government, which is expected in 2015'.

 

The extension means that the option to acquire a non-Australian vehicle 'remains on hold' pending the outcome of the manufactured and supported in Australia (MSA) development contract, the spokesperson added.

 

Six Hawkei vehicles, including two utility variants, two command variants, two reconnaissance variants and one trailer, have been undergoing testing under the MSA contract at the Monegeetata Proving Ground in Victoria and other facilities since May 2013.

 

Testing has been completed on the integration of communications systems, mobility, survivability, payload, reliability, air and sea transportability, and user assessments by Australian soldiers, according to the spokesperson.

 

The $1.5bn project LAND 121 phase 4, known as overlander, aims to purchase up to 1,300 protected and unprotected light vehicles to help replace one-third of the Australian Army's existing Land Rover vehicle fleet.

 

Hawkei was selected by the DoD as a preferred choice for the light-protected vehicle in December 2011.

 

Manufactured at Thales's Bendigo facility in Victoria, the Hawkei is a 7t, 4×4 next-generation light-mobility vehicle designed to safeguard soldiers against improvised explosive devices (IED) and ballistic missiles.

 

Thales Australia is the prime contractor for the Hawkei project, which also includes Boeing Defence Australia, Plasan Sasa and PAC Group as partners.

Australia Likely To Order More F-35s

Australia is likely to commit to buying 58 more Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightnings this month, setting aside the alternative of consolidating its combat aircraft squadrons on the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. The decision will increase the country's total commitment to 72 F-35s and expand the Royal Australian Air Force's fast-jet fleet, counting a separate order for 12 EA-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft as additional to, not part of, the fighter force renewal.
 
The defense department has recommended the F-35 order, probably worth around $8 billion, and the proposal has the endorsement of a leading think-tank. The government shows every sign of accepting the recommendation, says a source closely connected to the authorities. Accordingly, Lockheed Martin has probably escaped the danger of losing one of its largest F-35 customers, one that has already backed away from an original requirement for about 100 of the stealthy fighters. Even the risk that Australia could trim its commitment a little further now looks low, although that option was suggested by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute think-tank.

SWEDISH defence giant Saab is making a bold, secret play for a slice of Australia’s $30 billion future submarine project.

As Federal Government placed all options for the navy’s future submarine back on the table this week, News Corp Australia can reveal that Saab and the Swedish Government have been engaged in secret talks with the Defence Department about the design of the new boats.

A Swedish delegation travelled to Canberra in March for first round talks.

Sweden has along history in submarines but it moved away from the business about 15 years ago when its shipbuilder Kockums — the company that designed the Collins Class submarine — was sold to German company Thyssen Krupp MS (TKMS).

The Swedish Government last month cancelled a deal with Kockums to buy its future submarine and since then it has contracted Saab to examine options for the nation’s sub-surface fleet.

One option is buying the submarine builder back from TKMS and possibly expanding operations in Australia.

Saab has hired almost 100 submarine experts from Kockums during the past month and its spokesman Anders Carp hinted that the hi-tech defence company could make a bid for Adelaide based submarine maker ASC if an when it came up for sale.

“We are impressed with the company,” Mr Carp said.

When asked if Saab might buy the company and build the Swedish submarines in Adelaide he did not rule it out and he added that 80 per cent of the company’s popular Gripen fighter jet was built elsewhere.

He said discussions between Saab and Australia had involved the design of the vessel and not the combat management systems. Australia favours an American combat system.

Saab already has crucial safety systems installed in the Collins Class fleet.

Mr Carp said the option for an evolved Collins Class vessel would be the most cost effective solution for Australia.

Saab executives met with government staffers on the sidelines of this week’s ASPI submarine conference in Canberra.

Defence Minister David Johnston told the conference that all options were on the table as the government developed its first Defence White Paper for release early next year.

He said the favoured option was to build the boats in Adelaide but “not at any cost”.

Options also include a possible partnership with the world’s biggest and most capable diesel-electric submarines the 4200-tonne Japanese Soryu Class boat.

Discussions with the Japanese are well advanced, but Senator Johnston refused to elaborate saying they were “commercial-in-confidence”.

There is strong interest in the Swedish designed Stirling engine and its air independent propulsion system that allows the vessel to remain submerged for long periods of time.

The biggest drawback with a diesel-electric boat compared with a nuclear vessel is the need to “snorkel” for air to feed the diesels that recharge the batteries.

The advantage of conventional powered vessels is their silence and that they can operate in shallower waters than nuclear submarines.

Lockheed Martin, BAE square off for Australian trainer contract

Sydney - Industry teams led by Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems in Australia have met the 31 March deadline to bid for the Australian Defence Force’s AIR 5428 pilot training system, which aims to replace the Royal Australian Air Force’s fleet of 63 Pilatus PC-9/As from 2018.

 

The successful bidder will provide the aircraft along with flight-line support, training facilities, campus accommodation and facilities, courseware, simulators and other synthetic training devices.

 

The ADF will provide flying training instructors, and the aircraft will be purchased by the Commonwealth and placed on the military register.

 

The Lockheed Martin Australia-led “Team 21” bid includes Pilatus and is offering the PC-21 advanced trainer, while partner Hawker Pacific provides simulation and maintenance, repair and overhaul services to multiple civil and military organisations in the Asia-Pacific. The Team 21 bid effectively mirrors that of the 20-year arrangement the group has with Singapore for that country’s Basic Wings Course, which is located at RAAF Pearce.

 

The other bid is from a BAE Systems Australia-led team, and is based around the Beechcraft T-6C. BAE will draw upon its experience operating interim basic flight training system (IBFTS) for the ADF, and its involvement in the UK’s military flying training system. BAE also provides in-service maintenance support for the RAAF’s Hawk 127 lead-in fighter trainers and the Army’s Boeing CH-47D Chinook fleet. Bid partner CAE Australia also operates multiple simulators under its Management and Support of ADF Aerospace Simulators contract.

 

The aircraft to be replaced are operated by the Central Flying School based at RAAF Base East Sale in Victoria, the No 2 Flying Training School at RAAF Pearce and the 4 SQN forward air controller development unit at RAAF Williamtown.

 

Also to be replaced is the industry-operated IBFTS at Tamworth, New South Wales, which performs flight screening and basic flying training for RAAF, Navy and Army pilot candidates on the Pacific Aerospace CT-4B.

 

The successful bid is expected to be selected by the end of 2014. A “second pass” contract signature is due to follow in 2015, with service entry in 2018.

Australia in Talks to Buy Japanese Submarines to Upgrade Fleet

ALMOST 72 years after Japanese midget submarines attacked Sydney Harbour killing 21 sailors, Australia could buy Japanese subs for its $30 billion replacement program.

Possible access to Japanese technology and even a so-called “military off-the-shelf” deal to buy the boats is on the agenda during high-level defence talks in Tokyo between Prime Minister Tony Abbott and senior Japanese officials.

Mr Abbott’s talks follow a top-secret mission to Japan in February by the nation’s defence purchasing guru and head of the Defence Materiel Organisation Warren King to open negotiations with Japan’s defence agency for possible access to its Soryu Class submarines.

Defence Minister David Johnston has also met Japanese officials to discuss submarines and senior navy officers have been on board the Japanese boats to examine technologies such as the Swedish-designed air independent propulsion (AIP) system.

The AIP system allows the diesel-electric vessels to remain submerged for long periods of time without the need for fresh air for diesel power-plants.

When asked yesterday what aspects of the Japanese boats might be included in an Australian design, a senior government source replied: “Everything.”

When pressed on whether that included buying the boats off-the-shelf from the Japanese the answer was an emphatic “yes”.

At a submarine conference in Canberra tomorrow Senator Johnston will tell Defence and industry that “all bets are off” when it comes to options for the future Australian submarine fleet.

He will also debunk the myth that Australia needs 12 submarines and will make it plain that the government is not a job-creation agency for local shipbuilders.

That means shipbuilder ASC would need to prove its credentials as a competitive and skilled shipyard.

Japanese officials have visited the ASC shipyard at Port Adelaide, where the navy’s six Collins Class boats were built.

The Japanese vessels cost about $600 million each, or less than half the price of an Australian-made alternative.

The 4200-tonne (submerged) Soryu submarines would be an ideal fit to replace the ageing 3400-tonne Collins boats.

It is understood the Japanese technology could also be used to extend the life of the Collins boats beyond the late 2020s.

Senator Johnston will also urge Defence to get moving quickly so a decision can be taken by March 2015.
He will point out that it took Singapore just 10 months to move from concept to decision for its new submarine.

Australia’s RMIT researchers develop bird-like UAV

Researchers from RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, are working on a project to develop an autonomous unmanned aircraft, designed to improve energy efficiency and endurance.

 

Developed inspired by soaring birds, the project is carried out in collaboration with Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) of Australia. It is supported by the Defence Science Institute.

 

The autonomous unmanned aircraft prototype has been designed to replicate a bird, and is capable of staying airborne by using updrafts around buildings to increase its endurance.

 

RMIT University lead researcher Dr Reece Clothier said that soaring birds used positive air flows generated around features such as cliffs or large buildings to maintain lift.

 

"This research aims to develop the sensing and control systems that will allow a small fixed-wing unmanned aircraft to achieve the same thing," said Clothier.

 

"Birds make soaring look easy, but when we try to mimic what they know by instinct, we realise just how far advanced nature is in its designs."

 

The project will combine real-time sensing of wind and complex flow models to find possible positive airflows around large buildings.

 

According to DSTO aerospace division senior research scientist Dr Jennifer Palmer, the unmanned aircraft can predict airflows in its surrounding environment and by using this information it minimises its energy consumption, maximise its endurance and avoid areas of high turbulence.

 

"DSTO undertakes research in a number of areas related to autonomous unmanned aircraft, and this is a great opportunity to engage with academia on a project with both scientific challenges and real-world outcomes," Palmer said.

 

The research team intends to realise the potential benefits of unmanned aircraft technology in applications that range from fire fighting to search and rescue, agriculture, infrastructure inspection and public protection.

Australia waits on C-27J transfer approval

Sydney - Australia's programme to introduce the Alenia Aermacchi C-27J medium transport remains on track, despite a two month delay in its lead aircraft leaving Italy to undergo modifications in the USA.

 

First flown in December 2013, "green" aircraft A34-001 had been scheduled to arrive at L-3 Communications' Waco, Texas facility on 11 February, ahead of work to bring it to the Joint Cargo Aircraft configuration. Scheduled to take three months to complete, the work involves the fitting of an electronic warfare and infrared countermeasures suite, US-standard communications equipment and ballistic matting around the cockpit and loadmaster’s station.

 

The Australian Department of Defence says delays in obtaining flight clearances from EASA and the US Federal Aviation Administration have delayed the event, citing “a change in process associated with delivery of the first Foreign Military Sales customer aircraft”. However, Australian officials say they are confident the programme “remains comfortably within the scheduled need dates”.

 

Ten C-27Js will be operated by the Royal Australian Air Force’s 35 Sqn from Richmond air base near Sydney, New South Wales. Its second example is now being flight-tested from Turin, with another six aircraft in various stages of production and to be completed at roughly three-month intervals.

 

Selected in 2011, Australia's C-27Js will replace its retired de Havilland Canada DHC-4 Caribous. The first four aircraft are due to be flown to Richmond in early 2015, with initial operating capability scheduled for mid- to late-2016. Full operating capability should be declared by the end of 2017, following the delivery of all aircraft, a full flight simulator and a fuselage trainer.

 

Ahead of the type's introduction, the Australian DoD says it has signed an agreement with the Pentagon “to establish a training delivery contract with L-3 to enable commencement of training in the fourth quarter of 2014”.

Canberra and Tokyo struck the agreement Monday to enhance trade and security ties, including joint development of defence equipment, elevating the bilateral relationship to a new level.

Bon d’accord, la bateau qui apportera les véhicules blindés au pays du soleil levant sera moins chargé que ceux qui en ramènent des Toyota et autre Nissan… Thales Australia, qui a la responsabilité de la fabrication du véhicule, annonce la vente de seulement… quatre véhicules qui seront mis en œuvre par l’armée de terre japonaise (Japan Ground Self-Defence Force). Cette vente n’en constitue pas moins un beau succès pour pour la filiale australienne du groupe Thales, le Bushmaster ayant semble-t-il été opposé au M-ATV d’Oshkosh dans cette compétition. Les blindés, qui seront tous en version transporte de troupe, seront livrés fin 2014. Que vont pouvoir faire les Japonais de ces véhicules et s’agit simplement d’un échelon précurseur avant une vente plus large ? Le communiqué de presse de Thales rappelle que le Bushmaster « lors des déploiements sur les théâtres afghans et irakiens (…) a démontré toute son efficacité à la fois en milieu urbain mais aussi dans les régions plus montagneuse. Il est ainsi parfaitement adapté aux différents environnement géographiques du Japon ». Faut il donc croire comme le laisse entendre ces deux phrases que les Bushmaster seront utilisés sur le  territoire national japonais, où le bush est maigre et le niveau de menace

 

sensiblement moins élevé qu’en Irak ou en Afghanistan (sauf à considérer les soubresauts de la Terre). Ou bien ces véhicules seront-ils plutôt associés aux interventions extérieures des JGSDF ? Rappelons que depuis 2004, rompant avec sa traditionnelle politique de non-intervention  depuis la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale, Tokyo a déployé à travers le monde plusieurs contingents dans des opérations de maintien de la paix. Le premier contingent avait d’ailleurs été envoyé en… Irak

Thales va vendre des blindés Bushmaster au Japon. Ils seront fabriqués par la filiale australienne du groupe français pour un montant inconnu.

 

Le groupe français d'électronique et de défense Thales a annoncé lundi la vente de quatre de ses blindés Bushmaster au Japon, confirmant ainsi le succès de ce véhicule fabriqué en Australie à l'exportation.

Ces blindés à roues, en version transport de troupes, doivent être livrés d'ici la fin de l'année à la force d'auto-défense terrestre du Japon, indique Thales dans un communiqué, sans révéler le montant du contrat. Chris Jenkins, PDG de Thales Australia commente :

"Ce nouveau contrat à l'export démontre le succès grandissant et la polyvalence du Bushmaster. (...) Il s'agit pour Thales du premier contrat de plateformes au Japon. Notre objectif est de fournir des technologies et des services qui répondent parfaitement aux besoins du ministère de la Défense japonais. Nous nous réjouissons de travailler en étroite collaboration avec la force d'auto-défense terrestre japonaise dès que les véhicules seront en service."

 

1.000 exemplaires vendus

Déployé en Irak et en Afghanistan, le Bushmaster a été vendu à plus de 1.000 exemplaires, à l'Australie, aux Pays-Bas et à la Jamaïque, ajoute Thales.

Le groupe français, qui a réalisé en 2013 un chiffre d'affaires de 14,2 milliards d'euros, travaille sur les marchés de l'aérospatiale, de la défense, de la sécurité et des transports. Sa filiale Thales Australia a enregistré des ventes de 1 milliard de dollars australiens (677 millions d'euros) l'année dernière.

The Japanese Ministry of Defence has ordered four Bushmaster vehicles for deployment with the Japan Ground Self-Defence Force (JGSDF).

The vehicles, all troop carrier variants, will be manufactured at the company’s facility in Bendigo, Victoria in Australia, for delivery in late 2014.

Thales Australia CEO Chris Jenkins said: “This new export order demonstrates the ongoing significance and versatility of the Bushmaster vehicle.

BAE Taranis UCAV At RAAF’s Woomera Airfield

Satellite imagery acquired by DigitalGlobe appears to show the BAE-built Taranis stealth UCAV at Australia’s RAAF Woomera Airfield.

Team 21 Submits Bid for Future Australian Pilot Training System

Lockheed Martin Australia and Pilatus Aircraft, supported by Hawker Pacific, have jointly launched a bid to provide a new pilot training system for the Australian Defence Force.

 

The consortium, known as Team 21, submitted its proposal for the AIR 5428 Pilot Training System on March 31st. Under the proposal, Australian Defence Force pilots will graduate from a proven training system tailored to Australian requirements.

 

The companies in this team are currently in the eighth year of a 20-year performance-based flight training contract to provide the Basic Wings Course (BWC) to the Republic of Singapore Air Force, at Royal Australian Air Force Base Pearce in Western Australia.

 

 

“Team 21 offers superior performance, a proven team in Australia and capability for the future,” said Raydon Gates, Lockheed Martin Australia chief executive. “We have an established track record and have now graduated 20 classes from a Pilatus PC-21 based pilot training program at RAAF Base Pearce. BWC has very similar mission and support systems as proposed for AIR 5428, significantly reducing risk to the Commonwealth.”

The Sri Lankan Navy has received the first Australian Customs and Border Protection Vessel (ACV), Corio Bay, at a flag transfer ceremony in Cairns, Australia.

 

Provided by the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service (ACBPS), the Bay-class patrol vessel has been renamed the Republic of Sri Lanka Navy Ship Oshadi.

 

The ACBPS national director of border force capability Nigel Perry said that the flag transfer ceremony marks the passing of responsibility, authority and accountability of command from one state to another.

 

As part of this process, ACBPS Marine Unit Officers trained Sri Lankan Navy personnel in day-to-day operational aspects and ship maintenance.

"During the course of its 14 years as a customs vessel, Corio Bay completed 3,759 sea days and steamed 284,026nm."

 

"The training was comprehensive. It included activities ranging from deck work, familiarisation of electronic systems and equipment on board, to undertaking operational drills," Perry said.

 

"It was a highly successful 17-day training programme, which allowed crews from both nations to exchange knowledge and experience of operating in the maritime environment.

 

"During the course of its 14 years as a customs vessel, Corio Bay completed 3,759 sea days and steamed 284,026nm."

 

The highly agile and responsive vessel will complement the Sri Lankan Navy's existing fleet, while conducting search and rescue missions more effectively, covering a large area of the Indian Ocean.

 

It had been designed to perform strategic patrols, tactical surveillance and enforcement for various agencies to address the eight maritime security threats within and beyond Australia's 200nm Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

New Light Armoured Vehicle Put to the Test

After rigorous testing, the new Australian Light Armoured Vehicle surveillance variant, ALSAV-S, has been shown to significantly improve Army’s Cavalry operations.

The new vehicles tested during Exercise Kosta River in late March 2014, conducted at the Shoalwater Bay Training Area.

Commanding Officer of 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment (Queensland Mounted Infantry) Lieutenant Colonel Ash Collingburn said the vehicles were yet another tool in the Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance toolbox.


 


“The new vehicles are a game changer; the new capability they provide changes the way we think about Cavalry operations,” Lieutenant Colonel Collingburn said.

Exercise Kosta River, was a training opportunity for surveillance troops, providing the chance to put the new vehicles through their paces.

“We’re learning as we go,” Lieutenant Colonel Collingburn said.

 


“We have some very smart junior Non Comissioned Officers and soldiers in the surveillance troop and they are quickly learning about the limitations and realising the full potential of the capability.”

Equipped with the Multispectral Surveillance Suite of equipment including a ground surveillance radar, thermal camera and day camera, the vehicles are capable of laser designating targets and can penetrate the tree canopy thanks to its raiseable mast.

This equipment now allows the surveillance troops to screen over greater distances than they have previously been able to with traditional Cavalry vehicles.

 


Crew Commander Corporal Daniel Cameron leads one of the vehicles and said the first time he saw the system in his training he thought it was amazing.

“You could see everything,” he said. “It makes you think harder now as a crew commander on where to position the vehicle to get the full potential out of the system.”

Corporal Cameron said the field trial had been going well. “Like anything there are always some teething issues with new equipment but the training we’re doing here is good in order to test it properly,” he said.

BAE Systems helps keep RAAF ‘eyes in the sky’

Adelaide, SA: BAE Systems today signed an AU $77 million, five-year contract extension with Boeing Defence Australia (BDA) to continue support for the electronic warfare sub-systems aboard the RAAF’s Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft.

 

This extends the existing support contract until at least mid-2019 and retains 35 high skilled positions in South Australia. It also keeps BAE Systems at the forefront of Australia’s electronic warfare capability. The extension follows the recently announced signing of a five-year extension to the Wedgetail support prime contract between BDA and the Commonwealth.

BAE Systems has provided engineering, maintenance and spares support for the Wedgetail electronic warfare suite under subcontract to Boeing for the past two and a half years. The state-of-the-art equipment is operated by on-board sensor specialists to locate and identify radar emitters and to protect the aircraft and its crew from potential missile threats.

“We are very pleased to retain this work and specialist skills in South Australia,” said Kim Scott, Director Land & Integrated Systems. “We trust that continued success on this program will help demonstrate that this type of advanced technology and capability can be provided locally to world standards.”

Marand delivers first Australian made Vertical Tails for F35

A ceremony was held at Australian company Marand, commemorating the delivery of the first ship of Australian made F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter vertical tails.

 

The Honourable Dr. Denis Napthine, Premier of Victoria and The Honourable Michael Ronaldson, Senator for Victoria representing the Defence Minister were among the distinguished guests in attendance.

This delivery of the first major air frame components marks an important production milestone for Marand, ourselves and Australia, demonstrating the significant industrial benefits the F-35 program brings to the growing Australian aerospace industry.  The work on the F-35 vertical tails is subcontracted to Marand by ourselves and is one of the largest planned manufacturing projects for the F-35 in Australia, with 722 ship sets anticipated.

 “We take our commitment to international participation very seriously, and today is a very proud day for us, for Marand, and for Australia’s F-35 programme.  In just two years, we have worked side by side with Marand to develop a world class aerostructure facility with a first-rate, repeatable capability for the next 20 to 30 years,” said Cliff Robson, senior vice president F-35 for BAE Systems. 

David Ellul, managing director of Marand, commented, “This is a major step for Marand to move into the field of aerostructures manufacturing.  I am very proud of our team for achieving so much in such a short time with tremendous support from BAE Systems. Australia announces funding for new future defence technology projects

The Australian Department of Defence is investing up to $13m for development of future defence technology under Round 18 of the Capability and Technology Demonstrator (CTD) programme.

 

Managed by the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DTSO), the CTD programme enhances Australia's defence capabilities by offering local industry an opportunity to develop and demonstrate new technologies.

 

Australian Defence Minister Senator David Johnston said that seven technology proposals from Australian companies and universities have been selected to demonstrate possible defence applications in 2014.

 

"These proposals have the potential to advance defence capability, produce innovative products for defence and civilian use, and stimulate Australian industry growth," Johnston added.

 

The projects were submitted by GPSat Systems Australia, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, CEA Technologies, Adelaide Research & Innovation (University of Adelaide), EM Solutions, BAE Systems Australia and Lockheed Martin Australia.

 

The proposals include a new technology for improved detection of interference sources affecting GPS, a portable fuel cell to boost energy support to forward operating bases, software for rapid submarine communications, and a sound deadener to improve submarine stealth through reduction in exhaust noise from diesel engines.

 

Other proposals include the development of a portable global wideband satellite communications terminal suitable for smaller ships, technology to improve the processing performance of maritime radars, as well as a miniature radio frequency kit for next generation decoys that protect Australian Defence Forces (ADF) platforms from missiles.

 

Australian Assistant Defence Minister Stuart Robert said the department has invested $263m in 112 projects since the beginning of the CTD programme, half of which were proposed by small-to-medium enterprises.

 

"Of these, 96 projects have provided successful demonstrations to date, with 15 having entered service," Robert added.

 

The new CTD projects are scheduled to start in mid-2014, subject to satisfactory contract negotiations.

Australia develops support infrastructure for MH-60Rs

Sydney - Work on the Royal Australian Navy’s Lockheed Martin MH-60R Romeo helicopter support facilities is well underway at HMAS Albatross near Nowra on the New South Wales south coast.

 

Construction of the squadron and training facilities for the new helicopters commenced in late 2013, and on 26 March the Maritime Helicopter Support Company (MHSCo) commenced work on its contractor support facilities. MHSCo is a joint venture company of Sikorsky and Lockheed Martin.

 

One of the new buildings will be an 8,300 square metre deep maintenance workshop and hangar with space for five machines, a ramp, and direct access to the flight line, and will be equipped with a paint booth and wash bay, a structures and composite shop, an avionics shop, a hydraulic test facility, an NDT facility, and offices and training rooms. The other is a 3,100 square metre spares and logistics warehouse.

 

It is projected that 120 Team Romeo staff from the US Navy, Lockheed Martin, Sikorsky, and General Electric will be based at the facilities and will operate under a through life support arrangement with MHSCo as part of the Project Air 9000 Phase 8 naval combat helicopter programme.

 

“Excavation and construction of these TLS buildings begin an important chapter for the long-term readiness of Australia’s most sophisticated maritime helicopter,” says MHSCo president Rod Scotty. “Our company’s experience supplying repaired parts for more than 500 US Navy H-60 maritime helicopters around the world will directly carry over to a larger business model specially-configured for Australia’s maritime helicopter needs, and carried out by skilled Australian technicians and administrators inside a modern, dedicated space.”

 

Work on the contractor support facilities is being overseen by local Sikorsky subsidiary Sikorsky-Helitech, and is due to be completed in early 2015.

 

Training by ‘NUSQN725’ pilots, aviation warfare officers (AVWOs) and maintainers is well underway with embedded elements at the US Navy’s NAS Jacksonville in Florida. The unit has received four MH-60Rs from Lockheed Martin to date, and is scheduled to return to Australia in December to be formally commissioned as 725SQN.

 

The MH-60R was selected in early 2011 ahead of the competing NH Industries NFH 90 to replace the RAN’s 16 ageing S-70B-9 Seahawks of 816SQN, and the 11 SH-2G(A) Seasprites which never entered operational service and were cancelled in 2008 due to airworthiness concerns. The RAN Romeo acquisition covers 24 aircraft in total in a military off-the-shelf FMS arrangement through the US Navy, and the aircraft are identical to US Navy machines.

 

As part of the contract the RAN has also bought a ‘Bromeo’ training aid which was delivered to Jacksonville in February. The Bromeo is essentially a mothballed non-flying SH-60B Seahawk which has been taken out of storage and modified with MH-60R avionics and dynamic components for maintenance training.

DRS Technologies Canada To Provide Communications Systems For Royal Australian Navy’s ANZAC-class Frigates

The subcontract was awarded to DRS Technologies Canada Ltd. (DRS TCL) in support of a communications modernization contract by Selex ES. DRS Technologies Canada Ltd. (TCL) is the primary subcontractor to Selex ES.

Under the subcontract DRS will provide all internal tactical and secure voice switching systems and terminals, including the SHINCOM 3100 central switching unit, wideband audio network data switching system, console dual screen terminals, outdoor terminals, jackboxes and ancillaries.

SHINCOM 3100 is the latest generation of shipboard communications switch technology; and provides reliable, red/black secure tactical communications for Navy operators.

DRS TCL will produce and deliver eight ship-sets and two shore systems under the subcontract.

Les USA augmentent la présence de leurs Marines en Australie

Les Etats-Unis se proposent d'envoyer 1 150 nouveaux Marines à leur base en Australie. Ceux-ci se joindront à 200 militaires déjà déployés dans la base de la ville de Darwin.

 

Les Marines doivent arriver en Australie au début d'avril. Les Etats-Unis vont également transférer 4 hélicoptères de transport CH-53E et une centaines de techniciens chargés de leur entretien.

 

Au total 2 500 Marines seront déployés en Australie d'ici 2017 dans le cadre du programme de Washington visant à accroître sa présence militaire en Asie-Pacifique.
