Gen. Tom Lawson, Chief of the Defence Staff

Gen. Tom Lawson, Chief of the Defence Staff

March 4, 2015 David Pugliese

As Defence Watch readers know, Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Tom Lawson is ready to move on.

Lawson says he is ready to retire at the end of his three-year commitment, which ends in October. (He officially became CDS in late October, 2012). Lawson says he is ready to stay at the job until the government names a new CDS.

But some at National Defence headquarters say that should be coming sooner, rather than later. They argue that for planning purposes it would make sense if the new CDS was named by late May. That way, a new chief of the defence staff and his team would have the (supposedly) quiet days of summer to orient themselves to the top job.

I looked into the news archives and found that Lawson was named to the CDS post Aug. 27, 2012 but not officially sworn in until Oct. 29, 2012.

The question? Do you think the government will name a new Chief of the Defence Staff by the end of May?
