A new state-of-the-art fighter pilot helmet by BAE Systems is able to to see in the dark, as well as to 'see through' the aircraft

 

BAE Systems has unveiled the Striker II, its most advanced fighter pilot helmet which removes the need for external night-vision goggles. The helmet has a fully integrated digital night vision and can also track the pilot's head movement, a feature that allows the aircraft computer system to work in sync with its human operator.

India Plans Joint Su-30 Aircraft Modernization with Russia

MOSCOW: India has expressed interest in carrying out a joint project to extensively modernize its SU-30MKI aircraft in collaboration with Russian companies, the Russian state technology corporation Rostec said in a statement Friday.

 

“In the long term, as recommended by the Russian Ministry of Defense, we plan a major upgrade of the SU-30SM [model] to increase its combat effectiveness. The Indian government has expressed interest in collaborating to modernize the SU-30MKI, which is an evolution of the SU-30SM,” the statement reads.

 

According to the statement, both aircraft models will be given upgraded avionics and radars, as well as an improved engine. The SU-30SM and the SU-30MKI will also be equipped with additional weapons.

 

The SU-30 MKI, NATO reporting name Flanker-H, is the Indian Air Force’s elite fighter-bomber. It was developed by Russia’s Sukhoi Aviation Corporation and built under license by India’s Hindustan Aeronautics.

 

Russia and India have been close partners in military and technical cooperation for decades. In 2014, the total value of weapons and military hardware delivered by Russia to India reached $4.7 billion, according to Russian Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation estimates.

Turkish state-owned missile and rocket house Roketsan signed two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with Polish companies Zak?ady Metalowe Mesko and Wojskowe Zak?ady Lotnicze Nr 1 (WZL 1) covering future cooperation on a range of defence industry activities. Both Polish companies are owned by the local armaments group Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ).

 

The scope of the signed MoU with ZM Mesko is to formalise the intent of collaboration on products and programmes involving capabilities and solutions including Cirit 70mm laser guided rocket and UMTAS (Uzun Menzilli Tanksavar Sistemi) long range air-to-surface anti-tank missile developed by Roketsan, air defence missile, guidance kits for conventional ammunition and other precision guided weapon systems.

The agreement with WZL 1 is to formalise the intent of collaboration on products and programmes involving the integration of Cirit and UMTAS weapon systems and other equipment on various types of platforms in the Polish Army inventory.

Both can be fired from helicopters, unmanned aircraft systems, armoured vehicles, light attack aircraft, surface vessels and stationary platforms. The T129 ATAK helicopter is being offered to Poland’s Kruk programme.

Tel Aviv - Israel's UVision will use the DSEi exhibition in London to detail the maritime capabilities of its Hero loitering munition system, which was unveiled at the Paris air show in June. UVision will exhibit a new naval platform launcher for the Hero range of weapons during the 15-18 September event, in addition to a system which enables their deployment from land vehicles.

Defence and security company Saab has received an order from the US Army for the shoulder-launched AT4CS RS (reduced sensitivity) anti-armour weapon system. Deliveries will take place during 2016.

The AT4CS RS is a disposable, preloaded weapon with a specially developed, unique shaped-charge warhead that delivers outstanding behind-armour-effects inside the target. Thanks to this new warhead the AT4CS RS also has improved insensitive munition (IM) characteristics.

Le plus récent porte-avions de l’US Navy pourrait subir un retard de 2 ans avant son premier déploiement, après que des responsables du Pentagone aient annoncé le mois dernier qu’il devrait subir un essai de résistance aux chocs avant d’être envoyé outre-mer.

 

Dans un premier temps, le Pentagone avait indiqué que cette décision entraînerait un retard de 6 mois. Le contre-amiral Jeffrey Harley,“ assistant deputy chief of naval operations for operations, plans and strategy” de l’US Navy, annonce désormais que le retard pourrait atteindre 2 ans.

 

Le Capt. Thom Burke, “director of fleet readiness”, précise que la durée du retard dépendra de la façon dont le porte-avions se comportera lors de l’essai : on fait détoner sous l’eau des explosifs réels pour vérifier la survivabilité des systèmes du navire dans des conditions extrêmes.

 

« Il y a toujours une marge d’incertitude lors d’un essai de résistance aux chocs, » explique-t-il. « Comment vont se comporter les différents systèmes. Il s’agit d’un navire entièrement nouveau. Si tout se passe comme prévu, rien ne va casser. Et nous n’aurons pas ce retard de 2 ans. Mais si beaucoup d’équipements doivent être réparés, alors ce sera plus long. »

 

En raison des retards qu’a connu la construction du Ford, l’US Navy préconisait que les essais soient menés sur le 2è porte-avions de ce type, le John F. Kennedy. Mais le bureau du Secrétaire à la défense a rejeté cette possibilité.

Washington DC  - The US Navy has placed its third order with Rockwell Collins and Elbit Systems of America (ESA) for a night vision cueing and display system that allows pilots to fly and fight as if it were daytime.

 

The system lets pilots using Elbit’s four-lens panoramic night vision goggle visually cue weapons and sensors and see head-up displaysymbology in the dark, giving them the ability to engage in high off-boresight air-to-air shots and air-to-surface strikes as they would visually during the day. Under a$21 million ceiling contract awarded by the navy last month, theRockwell Collins-ESA Vision Systemsjoint venture will produce120 Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System (JHMCS) Night Vision Cueing and Display (NVCD) systems, and 30 helmet-mounted display test sets.

The Lightweight Multiple Launcher New Generation (LML NG) system can be used on a tripod or vehicle mount, and supports swift deployment of STARStreak and/or the Lightweight Multirole Missile (LMM) systems. The system provides two ready to fire missiles, allowing it to handle saturation air attacks or provide a complimentary surface to surface capability. The man-portable system is designed to suit a wide range of missions from lightweight rapid reaction roles to air droppable operations.

 

When using the STARStreak missile - with it’s extremely fast time of flight - a variety of threats can be defeated from head on or fast crossing aerial targets, to targets such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and helicopters. When used with the LMM, a capability is provided to enable the defeat of surface targets such as Light Armoured Vehicles (LAVs), trucks and fixed installations and aerial targets such as UAVs. Both systems utilise Thales unique laser beam riding guidance system.

A new BAE Systems all-terrain vehicle which can reach more places and carry more cargo than any other vehicle of its kind, is making its debut at DSEI in London this week.

The new vehicle, called “Beowulf,” is based on the Company’s revered Viking BvS10 fighting, troop-carrying and logistics vehicle that was initially designed in Sweden for the UK Royal Marines. Beowulf has a payload capacity of eight tonnes and built-in flexibility with special role cabins in the rear car to carry a combination of personnel and cargo. The vehicle can traverse through water, swamps, snow and soft sand; and climb 45-degree slopes. Beowulf features increased crew comfort and visibility, and is easy to maintain and support, resulting in reduced operational costs.

Algeria orders additional Su-30 fighters

Algeria has ordered 14 Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets from Russia’s Irkut, which will augment the 44 Su-30MKs the country has in service.

 

RIA Novosti on Friday quoted Sergei Chemezov, the head of Russian defence technology holding company Rostic, as saying the contract was signed near the beginning of this year. Speaking at the 2015 Russian Arms Expo in Nizhny Tagil, he said the Algerian aircraft will be delivered in 2016 and 2017. Last week the Russian military ordered eight Su-30SM fighters.

 

Algeria received 28 Su-30s as part of a 2006 contract and another 16 under a 2010 contract. It appears the 16 aircraft in the second batch were delivered to replace 15 Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-29SMT fighters Algeria returned to Russia after declaring them “defective.”

 

The Su-30MKA operated by Algeria is a specialised variant of the Su-30MK fitted with a mix of French and Russian avionics. The former includes a head-up and multifunction displays manufactured by the Thales Group and Sagem of France.

 

The Su-30 is a twin-engine, multi-role military aircraft developed by from the Sukhoi Su-27UB. It is a two-seat, dual-role fighter for all-weather, air-to-air and air-to-surface deep interdiction missions introduced into operational service in 1996.

 

The primary combat aircraft in Algeria’s Air Force are a dozen MiG-25s, 23 MiG-29C/UBs and around 34 Su-24M/MKs.

 

Algeria is expanding its Air Force and in June took delivery of the first of six Mi-26T2 helicopters from Russia and has ordered another eight of the type. The North African country has also ordered 42 Mi-28NE attack helicopters, the first of which flew at the manufacturer’s Rostov plant in early December 2014.

 

Algeria’s Su-30s are being manufactured by Irkut, owned by the United Aircraft Corporation holding company.

A super-secretive satellite was launched by China from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center on Saturday. Launch of the unknown spacecraft – unofficially claimed to be the Communications Engineering Test Satellite -1 (TXJSSY-1) – took place at 15:40 UTC using a Long March-3B (Chang Zheng-3B) rocket, as the Chinese continue their build up in space.

There is very little information regarding the satellite, with no announcement provided in the Chinese media, despite the media heavily controlled by the Chinese government.

However, rumors circling on specialized Chinese space forums point to this launch involving the first Great Wall (Changcheng) satellite – a new series of Chinese satellites dedicated to early warning similar to the American Space Based Infra-Red Sensor satellites. One unofficial source claimed the spacecraft is the Communications Engineering Test Satellite -1 (TXJSSY-1)

Recently, Japan’s Kyodo News reported that China was building a missile defense system to detect a ballistic missile attack. The report was based on Chinese military documents that referred the development of an experimental early warning satellite program.

Additionally the report pointed out that China had started the development of an X-band radar system as part of a ground-based interceptor system. (end of excerpt)

The Navy of Brazil passed a major milestone in the PROSUB Submarine Development Program when, on September 2, the Nuclebrás Heavy Equipment SA (NUCLEP) delivered to Itaguaí Construção Naval (ICN), the final section of the pressure hull of the first conventional submarine (S-BR1), the "Riachuelo."

 

The ceremony marking the delivery, presided by the Commander of the Navy, Admiral- Eduardo Bacellar Leal Ferreira, marked the completion of the first phase of construction of the submarine "Riachuelo".

 

This delivery will now allow all sections of the pressure hull to move to the next phase of equipment and systems installation. The pressure hull is composed of cylindrical sections structurally reinforced to withstand the maximum operating pressure of the submarine.

 

PROSUB is a partnership between Brazil and France and provides, among other things, the transfer of technology necessary to the construction of four conventional diesel-electric submarines and one submarine with nuclear propulsion.

Le 2 septembre 2015, le général Jean-Pierre Bosser, chef d’état-major de l’armée de Terre, a visité le 4e régiment du matériel (4e RMAT) de Nîmes. Au programme de son déplacement : la maintenance et le recrutement.

 

Le CEMAT a ainsi profité de l’occasion pour rappeler au régiment ses engagements inscrits dans le nouveau modèle de l’armée de Terre : la maintenance opérationnelle se met désormais en œuvre au plus près des forces.

 

Il a par ailleurs réaffirmé la marge de manœuvre laissée au chef de corps pour recruter lui-même une partie de ses militaires. Un système « par le régiment pour le régiment » nécessaire afin d’atteindre l’objectif national de recrutement fixé à 11 000 hommes en deux ans.

 

Cette nouvelle stratégie a d’ailleurs déjà fait ses preuves au 4e RMAT ; le régiment a pratiquement bouclé ses objectifs de recrutement pour l’année 2015.

Sagem (Safran) vient de remporter une compétition auprès de la Marine royale norvégienne pour la modernisation du système de navigation de ses trois patrouilleurs océaniques de la classe Nordkapp. Unités armées de plus de 3 300 tonnes, ces bâtiments porte-hélicoptères seront équipés de systèmes de navigation à gyrolaser SIGMA 40. 

Développée et produite par Sagem, la centrale SIGMA 40 est un système inertiel à gyrolaser conçu pour garantir des mesures de navigation très précises dans les milieux les plus sévères. Opérant de manière entièrement autonome, SIGMA 40 contribue à l'efficacité des systèmes embarqués et au succès des missions les plus exigeantes des navires de combat. 

Le choix de la marine norvégienne pour la centrale SIGMA 40 de Sagem a été motivé par la très bonne tenue de performances obtenues dans les conditions de navigation spécifiques à la Norvège (fjords, météo, glace,…). La résistance de la SIGMA 40 à des chocs intenses sur une durée longue a été un élément déterminant dans le choix des opérationnels. SIGMA 40 est en effet l'une des rares centrales de navigation navale conformes aux spécifications de résistance aux chocs telles qu'énoncées dans la norme MIL-S 901 D.

Ce nouveau contrat vient conforter un partenariat de 20 ans avec la Marine royale norvégienne dans le domaine des systèmes de navigation, Sagem exerçant également une mission de conseil auprès de son client. La centrale SIGMA 40 XP de Sagem avait été sélectionnée par la marine norvégienne pour la modernisation à partir de 2008 des systèmes de navigation des six sous-marins ULA de la marine norvégienne. 

La centrale de navigation SIGMA 40 équipe à ce jour plus de 500  bâtiments de combat et 75 sous-marins, notamment les unités de premier rang les plus innovantes, telles que les frégates européennes FREMM et Horizon, les BPC Mistral et le porte-hélicoptère amphibie coréen LPX Dokdo. En version SIGMA 40XP, elle a été choisie pour les sous-marins classiques Scorpène de DCNS, pour la modernisation des systèmes de navigation des sous-marins nucléaires d'attaque de la classe Améthyste et pour l'équipement des futurs Barracuda.

The Royal Air Force’s transport fleet has reached a key milestone with the delivery of the latest Atlas aircraft to RAF Brize Norton.

 

The handover of the seventh A400M aircraft from Airbus Defence and Space means the £2.75 billion programme for 22 aircraft has achieved its In-Service Date (ISD), a declaration of the fleet’s capability to undertake extended world-wide tasks.

 

Four of the aircraft are now operating from Brize Norton while three others are being fitted with UK-specific systems required to operate in hostile environments, ahead of the next operational capability milestone which is due next year.

 

Defence Minister Philip Dunne said:

    This significant milestone marks an important achievement for all those who have been involved in the UK’s A400M Atlas programme, from the MOD and the RAF through to our industry partners.

    Those flying the aircraft are hugely impressed with its capability, and with a protected Defence budget and our investment of £160 billion in equipment, we look forward to growing the UK A400M Force over the coming months.

 

Since taking delivery of its first A400M Atlas in November, named ‘City of Bristol’, the aircraft has undertaken a range of training and operational sorties around the world to test its capability and to build up the first cadre of A400M aircrew.

 

RAF transport aircraft ready for worldwide operations

The aircraft, which will gradually replace the C130 Hercules, is capable of operating either at low or high-level altitudes and to deploy troops and/or equipment between and within theatres of operation, either by parachute or by landing on short, unprepared or semi-prepared strips.

 

The MOD’s Chief of Materiel (Air), Air Marshal Simon Bollom said:

    The achievement of the A400M In Service Date is a key milestone for the Royal Air Force and is testament to the outstanding work of the DE&S Project Team working closely with the RAF and industry. The fleet now has the core capabilities required to train the instructors and crews, and to undertake logistics missions.

    As the fleet continues to build, more advanced military capabilities will be introduced as planned over the coming months including aerial delivery of stores, parachuting and advanced self-protection capabilities.

The U.S. Air Force expects to increase the number of B-2 stealth bombers available for combat by one full jet and reduce fleet sustainment costs significantly under a new maintenance agreement worked out with B-2 prime contractor Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC).

 

Under the contract modification signed in April, Northrop Grumman will give each B-2 a major, end-to-end overhaul – a process called programmed depot maintenance (PDM) – once every nine years. Each jet currently undergoes PDM once every seven years. The PDM process, which includes a complete restoration of the jet's exterior surfaces, is performed at the company's Aircraft Integration Center of Excellence in Palmdale.

 

"This new approach to B-2 maintenance is a win-win for the Air Force and the nation," said Brig. Gen Eric Fick, Program Executive Officer for Fighters and Bombers within the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio. "It will enhance the jet's readiness to conduct global security missions, and is expected to save taxpayers about $900 million in maintenance costs over the life of the fleet."

 

"The nine-year PDM cycle is part of an aggressive on-going effort by Northrop Grumman and the Air Force to increase bomber availability," said Pat McMahon, sector vice president and general manager for military aircraft systems, Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems. "Our experienced work force has critically reviewed every PDM material and process for potential improvements. As a result, we've been able to reduce the length of the PDM process, and increase the time between PDM periods."

 

Bolstered by the adoption of USAF best practices used by other Northrop Grumman programs, the new nine-year overhaul cycle will reduce the average length of B-2 PDM to 365 days, down from more than 400 days in previous years. Under the new rhythm, Northrop Grumman will induct a B-2 into PDM approximately once every six months.

 

"Our delivery of the B-2 Spirit of Ohio back to the Air Force in August marked the last time we expect to have more than two jets in PDM at any one time," said McMahon. "Fewer jets undergoing PDM in Palmdale will keep more B-2s ready to serve the nation's security needs."

 

The B-2 is the only long-range, large-payload U.S. military aircraft that can penetrate deeply into denied access enemy air space. It can fly 6,000 nautical miles unrefueled and more than 10,000 nautical miles with just one aerial refueling, giving it the ability to reach any point on the globe within hours and hold at risk an enemy's most heavily defended targets.

Recent 'operational test' aboard USS 'Wasp' was no such thing

 

The Marine Corps triumphantly declared its variant of the F-35 combat ready in late July. In the public relations build-up, the recent demonstration of its performance on the USS Wasp was heralded as a rebuttal to the program’s critics.

But a complete copy of a recent memo from the Director of Operational Test and Evaluation (DOT&E) — obtained by the Project On Government Oversight through the Freedom of Information Act — reveals that a number of maintenance and reliability problems “are likely to present significant near-term challenges for the Marine Corps.”

The Marine Corps named this demonstration “Operational Test One,” but it turns out it wasn’t actually an operational test, “in either a formal or an informal sense of the term.” To count as an operational test, conditions should closely match realistic combat conditions.

But DOT&E found the demonstration “did not — and could not — demonstrate that Block 2B F-35B is operationally effective or suitable for use in any type of limited combat operation, or that it was ready for real-world operational deployments, given the way the event was structured.”

Lockheed Martin is to supply air-launched cruise missiles for the Polish Air Force.

 

The Polish Air Force is receiving Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles from Lockheed Martin for its fleet of F-16 fighters.

 

The contract for the air-to-ground cruise missiles comes as a result of a U.S. Foreign Military Sales deal for Poland announced last year.

 

That package, worth about $500 million, was for 40 AGM-158 JASSM missiles and upgrades to the aircraft.

 

"JASSM provides Poland with operational flexibility, reliability and mission effectiveness to meet their national defense requirements," said Joe Garland, vice president of business development at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. "JASSM gives our allies a powerful, vital and affordable cruise missile capability."

 

JASSM is a stealthy, precision-guided cruise missile that employes an infrared seeker and an enhanced digital anti-jam Global Positioning System. It is integrated on the U.S. Air Force's B-1, B-2, B-52, F-16 and F-15E. Internationally, it can also be used by F/A-18A/B and the F-18C/D aircraft.

 

Poland, with the order, will be only the third U.S. ally with the JASSM in their military inventory. The other two countries are Australia and Finland.

 

Lockheed Martin gave no information as to a delivery schedule for the missiles.

L'équipement électronique du chasseur fonctionne aussi bien que celui du F-35 américain, indique Defense World.

 

La Chine a entamé les exercices du septième et dernier prototype du chasseur Chengdu J-20, rapporte Defense World, se référant à l'édition chinoise Duowei News. "Si les exercices se déroulent avec succès, la production d'un petit nombre de J-20 pour la Force aérienne chinoise pourra commencer", indique l'édition. D'après la source, l'équipement électronique de ce chasseur fonctionne aussi bien que celui du F-35 américain. Le Chengdu J-20, souvent nommé Black Eagle ("l'aigle noir", ndlr), est un avion de chasse furtif de 5ème génération. Des experts militaires remarquent de forte ressemblances avec le prototype de chasseur russe Mikoyan Project 1.44/1.42 et les chasseurs américains de 5ème génération F-22 et F-35. Quant aux désavantages, les experts notent le manque de puissance de son système propulsif pour effectuer des vols à vitesse supersonique, l’imperfection de son radar ainsi que de la technologie "Stealth", permettant de réduire sa signature radar. En outre, la Chine a l'intention d'élaborer un nouveau chasseur de 5ème génération, le J-31.

London - Royal Air Force A400Ms will be equipped with an important security system from Airbus Defence & Space, under a new contract with the UK Ministry of Defence.

 

Worth £3.3 million ($5 million) for an initial 15-month activity spanning development to delivery, the deal will lead to the provision of a local crypto key management system. This technology “eliminates the need for crypto equipment aboard an airborne platform to be individually re-keyed before every mission,” says Airbus, which adds that the enhancement will “prevent data compromise that could threaten the safety and security of an aircraft’s mission.”

London  - The Euroradar consortium is closing in on the flight-test phase for its Captor E-Scan active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, for the Eurofighter Typhoon.

 

A pair of instrumented production aircraft (IPA) will be used for the test effort – IPA5 from the UK and IPA8 from Germany – and are nearly ready for radar installation, says consortium chairman Andrew Cowdery. “Both aircraft are nearing completion in terms of accepting the radar,” he says. The €1 billion ($1.1 billion) programme – which is part of a broader capability enhancement for the Typhoon – is "on track" to launch the next phase, which will require a "significant amount" of flight testing to complete the calibration and integration of the new radar.

CAE’s defence lead has revealed plans to replicate the unmanned air vehicle training that it offers to the US Air Force to more operators of the General Atomics Aeronautical Systems family of Predator UAVs.

 

The company currently provides pilot training for the MQ-1 and MQ-9 UAVs to the USAF at Holloman AFB in New Mexico, but with more sales of the type – particularly in Europe – Gene Colabatistto, group president of defence and security, is hoping that more “centres of excellence” can be established worldwide. “The strategy is that we want to be aligned with the Predator,” Colabatistto said during a media briefing at Holloman AFB, adding that there is an opportunity in every region – plus more in the USA – and that CAE has locations for these in mind. Italy is the first operator nation to acquire its own simulator for its Predator fleet, suggesting that Rome could be pursuing an intention to establish itself as a centre for training in Europe. France, Italy and the UK all carry out their pilot training at Holloman, while Dutch personnel are due to begin training next year.
