Elta, a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), is developing smaller models of many of its systems for the purpose of installation onboard UAVs. Elta is a leading manufacturer of radars, and is also considered an important manufacturer in additional fields.
“The use of UAVs is constantly increasing around the world,” Nissim Hadas, Elta’s CEO, told IsraelDefense.“ This necessitates that the company adapt systems that were initially intended for installation onboard combat fighters for UAVs, primarily medium and large-sized UAVs. These systems are not yet being acquired in quantities, but this is an increasingly growing market."
The bulk of the demand will apparently be for naval and terrestrial reconnaissance and tracking radars, for areas where the continuous presence of a platform with advanced sensors is required. UAVs are gradually filling an important role in this field in Israel and in other countries around the world.
The miniaturization of these systems to measurements that will allow for installation onboard UAVs is no small task, but Elta is dedicating a considerable effort towards it out of an understanding that it represents a market necessity.
