Recently Carl Zeiss Optronics delivered the first optronic system comprised of a SERO 400-60 and OMS100-60 to the Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH. As part of the second flight, the Kiel-based company built two additional U212A Class submarines for the German Navy.

Several modifications were made to the SERO 400 and OMS100 for the second flight. Battery-buffered emergency operation in the SERO 400 enables observations during a power failure. The optical components, for example, can be electronically controlled and configured.

Furthermore, a fiber-optic gyroscope replaces the mechanical gyroscope. It silently begins stabilizing the periscope and optronic mast system underwater without being detected by sonar. Moreover, the non-magnetic construction of the SERO 400 and OMS 100 minimizes the probability of being detected by surface ships. The amagnetic design of the submarine and its systems supports stealth underwater travel and covert missions in critical arenas. The second system will be delivered at the end of 2011 and in 2012 the Naval Arsenal in Kiel will receive the training system. It will be used to train users and maintenance personnel. Carl Zeiss has already delivered SERO 14 and SERO 15 systems for four boats in the first flight of this class of submarines.
