During a ceremony held August 28, 2012, on the grounds of the Naval Arsenal in Kiel, Germany, two former Type 206A submarines were commissioned into the Colombian Navy.

The ceremony was attended, among others, by the Colombian Ambassador to Germany Dr. Juan Mayr, te commander of the Colombian Navy Admiral Roberto Garcia, Deputy Director Christian Fischer of the German MoD and the acting commander of the fleet, Rear Admiral Michael Mollenhauer.

Under a contract concluded between Colombia and the HDW shipyard, the latter "tropicalized" the two submarines, which were originally designed for use in the Baltic. These activities have included the technical integration of the Naval Arsenal is intended.

Following the successful completion of the tropicalization the two boats -- 48.6 meters long and displacing 500 tonnes -- were loaded onto a special vessel which is transporting them to their new home port of Cartagena de Indias (Colombia).

"Intrepido" and "Indomable" will support two other submarines built by HDW in Kiel for the Colombian navy, "Tayrona" and "Pijao" (Type 209).

Until March 31, 2011, "Intrepido" and "Indomable" belonged to the German navy, with the sail numbers U 23 and U 24. They were built in 1972/1973 and commissioned into the German navy in 1974/1975.
