Beyond the procurement of three aircraft, already in production, the Israeli Air Force is looking into further procurement
Israel’s Ministry of Defense has begun discussions with Lockheed Martin regarding the possibility of procuring three Hercules C-130J transport aircraft, beyond the three aircraft which were already agreed upon. Ministry officials confirmed that the ministry approached the US manufacturer to receive details regarding a possible deal.
The IAF initially procured two Hercules aircraft with an option for procuring a third. The deal for the sale of the third aircraft was concluded in recent months. Meanwhile, IAF officials are reporting that discussions have begun over the possibility of procuring two additional aircraft beyond the framework of the original deal.
The price of the C-130J aircraft for the IAF has not been published by either of the parties. However, assessments are that the cost stands at approximately $80 million per aircraft. This price is higher than the aircraft's normal price, as the IAF asked that unique modifications be carried out on the aircraft supplied to it, compared to similar aircraft produced for the US Army and intended for use by special forces. The Israeli C-130J has room in its cockpit for two team members as well as a third person, which could be a pilot or a system operator, compared to only two people in the original version of the aircraft.
Beyond transport missions, the IAF’s aircraft are intended for missions such as refueling or electronic warfare. The IF is expected to receive the first of the new Hercules aircraft in 2013, with the second in 2014 and the third apparently in 2015. It is not yet clear when the other three aircraft will arrive to Israel, if it is decided to procure them.
