HAUPPAUGE, N.Y., Nov. 14 (UPI)
A $4.5 million NATO contract has been given to U.S. company Globecomm Systems Inc. to upgrade its NATO-deployed, GPS-based force tracking system.
The force tracking system provides NATO with high levels of tracking data and messaging traffic to constantly identify the location of NATO personnel and that of other multinational forces for situational awareness and prevention of fratricidal incidents.
"Globecomm has been providing this important service to this customer for more than 5 years," said Paul Knudsen, vice president of Globecomm's Eastern Atlantic Team, said.
"This upgrade is required to allow the system to handle additional communications traffic as well as replace equipment that has reached its end of serviceable life."
Globecomm Systems didn't disclose the length of the contract it received from the NATO Communications and Information Agency. It also didn't disclose the number of systems to be upgraded or what specifically the upgrade would entail.
Globecomm previously announced $61.3 million in contracts from NATO to design and install the GPS FTS.
