Navy to put its reserve under the microscope

The importance of strong reserve force component in the South African military machine was first emphasised 16 years ago by then Defence Minister Joe Modise.

Next month the Navy will take a long hard look at its reserve with a view to revitalising what is becoming more and more an essential for it to properly fulfil its mandate.

About 150 regular and reserve officers from the Navy as well as the SA National Defence Force Reserve Force are expected at the maritime service’s first dedicated reserve indaba. They will look at ways and means for the maritime service to build on Modise’s vision.

During the second year of his term as Defence Minister Modise said: “It is universally acknowledge that in democracy the citizen in uniform, the part-time soldier, is an indispensable element of a country’s defence”.

The challenge to make this reality has been taken up by Navy Chief Vice Admiral Johannes Mudimu who has decreed February 22 to 24 will be SAN Reserve indaba with the theme of “reserves at sea”.

A statement issued by Mudimu’s office indicates a broad cross-section of opinion will be presented so recommendations made will contribute positively to the role of the reserves in the Navy.

Among the issues up for discussion are the organisational structure and administration of the Navy Reserve, particularly with regard to support and landward functions.
