A delegation of South African investigators will travel to Sweden this autumn to look into claims that bribes were paid out when South Africa bought 28 Gripen fighter planes from the defense company Saab in 1999.

South Africa paid $US 2 billion for the planes. Last year, an internal investigation by Saab found that the company’s British partner BAE Systems had paid 24 million rand, or roughly $US 3.5 million, to the Saab-owned South African company Sanip.

Saab says it was not aware that the money was paid out.
