According to the US newspaper Boston Globe, an important test of the David’s Sling system, intended for intercepting long-range rockets, will be held in a few days
Several days after operation Pillar of Defense came to a conclusion, the US newspaper Boston Globe is reporting today that an important test of the David’s Sling system is slated to be carried out. The system is intended for intercepting rockets at various ranges, as well as medium and long-ranged missiles, of the kinds possessed by Hezbollah and additional enemies of Israel.
The experiment, which is expected to be held in Israel’s Negev region, will also be attended by representatives from the US, including representatives on behalf of US company Raytheon, which is involved in the development of the system through mediation by the Israeli company Rafael.
It was reported on IsraelDefense earlier this year that according to US media, the Obama administration intends to cut the assistance budget for Israel’s air-defense programs, particularly with regards to the development of the Arrow and David’s Sling systems. There is a need for finding immediate funding for the production and stationing of at least four to six of such systems.
However, in light of the considerable success of the Iron Dome interception system in the recent operation, in the event that the reported test of the David’s Sling system is deemed a success, it is possible that the project will receive additional US funding.
