Finnish EU Naval Force Autonomous Vessel Protection Detachment Keeps Skills Sharp During Deployment

The Finnish Autonomous Vessel Protection Detachment (AVPD), deployed with the EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Somalia Operation Atalanta since March 2013, is tasked with the protection of the World Food Programme (WFP) ship MV Caroline Scan.

 

EU Naval Force and Chinese Navy Work Together To Ensure World Food Programme Aid Ship Remains Safe From Pirates At Sea

On Saturday afternoon (22 June), EU Naval Force Italian warship, ITS Zeffiro and Chinese Navy warship CNS Mianyang, which are both conducting counter piracy operations, met at sea in the choppy waters of the Gulf of Aden.

 

EU Naval Force Hosts Meeting Between European Union and Somali Federal Government At Sea Off Mogadishu Coast

On Monday 24 June a meeting was held on board the EU Naval Force Portuguese flagship NRP Alvares Cabral, between members of the Somali Federal Government (SFG) and representatives from the European Union.  This was the first ever meeting held at sea between the European Union and SFG, with a focus on how both can work together to help strengthen maritime security and economic development in Somalia.

Today, members of the Somali Federal Government flew on board the EU Naval Force Portuguese flagship, NRP Alvares Cabral, at sea off Mogadishu.  They held talks with the EU Special Envoy to Somalia, the Operation Commander of the EU Naval Force Atalanta, and the Head of Mission for EUCAP NESTOR, to discuss how they can work together to help strengthen maritime security and economic development in Somalia.

The commanding officer and crew of EU Naval Force warship ESPS Numancia have received a heartfelt thank you from the crew of chemical tanker MT Perla, after the Spanish frigate provided assistance to two seriously injured Filipino sailors after they suffered severe burns in a fire on board their merchant ship.

 

EU Naval Force Flagship NRP Alvares Cabral Continues Strong Relationship With The World Food Programme

During a recent port visit to Mombasa the EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Somalia Operation Atalanta flagship NRP Álvares Cabral hosted representatives from the World Food Programme (WFP). The port visit in Kenya coincided with a re-supply visit from the WFP Ship MV Caroline Scan which allowed the second team of Finnish Marines to assume duties as the ships Autonomous Vessel Protection Detachment (AVPD) and marked the halfway point in the Finnish deployment, commited to the on-board protection of Caroline Scan.

 

EU Naval Force Strengthens Maritime Links With Kenyan Authorities

Between 6th and 10th June, the EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) flagship NRP Álvares Cabral visited Mombasa, Kenya. During the visit the EU NAVFOR Force Commander, Commodore Jorge Novo Palma, visited several Kenyan authorities to discuss co-operation and knowledge sharing in order to enhance maritime security in the region.

 

Tanzanian Coast Guard and EU Naval Force Warship FS Nivôse Conduct Boarding Procedures Training

On June 3rd, during a port visit to Dar Es Salaam, French frigate, FS Nivôse organised local maritime capacity building (LMCB) training with the Tanzanian Navy. This training built on the training conducted by FS Guepratte a few days earlier.

 

EU Naval Force Helps to Strengthen Cooperation with the Tanzanian Navy

Between 30–31 May 2013, the crew from French Navy frigate FS Guépratte, which is part of the EU’s counter piracy task force, conducted cooperation activities with the Tanzanian Navy whilst alongside Dar-es-Salaam, within the framework of the Local Maritime Capacity Building (LMCB) programme of the EU Naval Force, Operation Atalanta.

 

Indian Sailors Safe After EU NAVFOR Warship HSwMS Carlskrona Forces Pirates To Abandon Attack on Cargo Vessel

Fourteen Indian sailors are now safe, after pirates, who took control of their cargo vessel yesterday morning (5 June 2013) in the Gulf of Aden, abandoned the attack hours later after EU Naval Force warship HSwMS Carlskrona, together with NATO counter piracy Dutch warship HNLMS Van Speijk, closed in.

During a port visit to the Seychelles, EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) warship HSwMS Carlskrona conducted evidence handling training with the Seychellois Coastguard.

EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Somalia - Operation Atalanta is part of the EU's comprehensive approach to tackle symptoms and root causes of piracy off the coast of Somalia and the EU Strategic Framework for the Horn of Africa adopted in November 2011.

EU NAVFOR conducts anti-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia and the Indian Ocean and is responsible for the protection of World Food Programme (WFP) shipping carrying humanitarian aid to the people of Somalia and Horn of Africa as well as the logistic shippings supporting the African Union troops conducting Peace Support Operations in Somalia (AMISOM). Additionally, Operation Atalanta contributes to the monitoring of fishing activity off the coast of Somalia.
