Chasseurs et Spahis font bon ménage

12/09/13 par Concetto Bandinelli - mil.be

The MOD has awarded a GBP367 million contract to provide engine maintenance for 2 of the UK's military helicopter fleets.

The 6-year agreement with Rolls-Royce Turbomeca will deliver essential support for the Army’s Apaches and the Merlin helicopters used by the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. The new contract will deliver savings of more than £300 million compared to previous arrangements.

Both the Apaches and the Merlins, which operate around the world and have had extensive service in Afghanistan, are powered by the same RTM322 engines.

By simplifying the supply chain, improving technical support and increasing the availability of spare parts, the new contract will help to reduce the numbers of major repairs needed on the airframes, keeping them in the air for longer.

Work will be carried out at 4 bases where the Apaches and Merlins operate - RAF Benson, Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose, Army Air Corps airfields at Wattisham and Middle Wallop and at Rolls-Royce and Turbomeca sites in the UK and France.

Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology, Philip Dunne, said: “This contract will provide important support for our Merlin and Apache fleets, which play an vital role defending this country’s interests around the world. This includes defending the UK and protecting our personnel on operations in Afghanistan.

“By improving the way we work with industry to maintain our helicopters with contracts like these, we can keep Apache and Merlin helicopters in the air for longer, which also ensures best value for money, saving for the taxpayer £300 million over 6 years compared with the previous support arrangements.”

Air Commodore Mark Sibley, who is responsible for the maintenance of Apaches and Chinooks, said: “Merlins and Apaches have been used extensively in Afghanistan and are 2 key capabilities for our Armed Forces. This contract has a number of benefits for our Apache and Merlin crews, principally improving engine availability and reliability, while reducing costs.”

MP Desert Favorite Hits The Jungle

September 12, 2013: Strategy page

The Colombian Army recently ordered another 28 Commando wheeled armored vehicles from the United States for $1.13 million each. The Commando is a larger version of the older American M1117 ASVs (Armored Security Vehicles). All of the armored vehicles in the Colombian Army are on wheels, to better control the roads in areas where FARC or drug gangs are active. The army has about 300 armored vehicles, a growing number of them armored hummers.

Four years ago Colombia bought its first 39 American Commando vehicles, which is officially known as the ICV (Infantry Carrier Variant) of the M1117. The ICV is 61 cm (24 inches) longer than the original ASV, weighs 18 tons and carries a crew of three and eight passengers. Instead of the turret it has a cupola mounting a 12.7mm machine-gun or 40mm automatic grenade launcher.

The original ASV was, in effect, one of the first MRAPs (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) to get to Iraq. Originally developed in the 1990s for use by MPs (Military Police) in combat zones, only a few were bought initially. It was found that for 1990s era Balkan peacekeeping, existing armored vehicles were adequate and that in the narrow streets of Balkan towns the ASV was too wide to be very maneuverable. Then came Iraq, and suddenly the ASV was very popular. The army got a lot more because military police like these vehicles a lot. The MPs originally wanted 2,000 ASVs but before Iraq were told they would be lucky to get a hundred. After 2003, the MPs got all they wanted. Colombia noted the ASV success in Iraq and got some of their own.

The basic ASV is a 15 ton 4x4 armored car that is built to handle the kind of combat damage encountered in Iraq. The ASVs are, unlike armored hummers, built from the ground up as armored trucks. Basic ASVs are 6.1 meters (20 feet) long and 2.6 meters (8.5 feet) wide, making them a bit larger than hummers. The ASV is heavy enough to survive most roadside bombs and keep going. The ASV is bullet and RPG proof. The turret is the same one used on the U.S. Marine Corps LAV. When the marines went shopping for armored trucks, however, they passed on the ASV. This is believed to be mainly because most armored trucks have more room inside. The ASV carries a crew of three, with plenty of room for additional gear but not a lot of people. That's why the stretched ICV version was developed. Iraq has also bought the ICV version.

Final exercise for the “Elou” battalion

From September 10 to 12, the Malian battalion « Elou » is involved in the « Doumba » final exercise, marking the end of its training by the European Union training mission in Mali (EUTM Mali).

The « Doumba » exercise (the name of the locality forming the epicenter of the maneuvering area) takes place in the northern region of Koulikoro, in a quadrangle from 50/40 km. It aims to assess the operational capability of the Elou battalion to conduct an autonomous coordinated maneuver at combined arms battle group level, in the frame of the scenario of an attack led by armed elements, leading an offensive towards the South. It consists of four phases: recce in force, reduction of enemy resistance, area control, blocking action. Two Mirage 2000 fighter aircrafts of the Serval French force are also involved in this exercise, through two slots an hour’s flight, as part of the evaluation of TACP (tactical air control patrols) teams Elou battalion.

NIITEK®, Inc., a subsidiary of the Chemring Group PLC ("Chemring"), and now Chemring Sensors & Electronic Systems (CSES) announced today that the Turkish Army has made a purchase of the two-operator Husky Mine Detection System (HMDS) to lead its route clearance patrols and provide minefield clearance capability. The NIITEK® HMDS is a multi-panel high-performance Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) system which functions on manned, blast resistant vehicles that provide rapid ability to scope out anti-vehicular landmines and other explosive hazards on main supply routes and additional open areas as needed. This is Turkey’s first acquisition of the HMDS and represents a critical enhancement in the mine and Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detection, interrogation, and clearance capabilities for the Turkish military. The NIITEK® Ground Penetrating Radar is now in use with the U.S., Canadian, Australian, and Spanish Militaries.

This equipment is a significant leap forward in Turkish Army mine detection capability. Three of the four two-seat variant Husky 2G vehicles sold to Turkey feature the NIITEK® Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and the fourth Husky 2G features a robotic arm. Additionally, the Turkish Army procured two R-VISOR robots mounted on the QinetiQ TALON® featuring a NIITEK® GPR and Metal Detector. The robots clear footpaths as well as areas not accessible to the much larger HMDS. Delivery was completed August 2013 in Turkey. The contract includes installation, training, and logistics support. NIITEK®, along with its partners Critical Solutions International (CSI), sales lead for the Husky 2G manufactured in South Africa, and IPA Defence, a Turkish based company as the main contractor in this project, representing NIITEK® & CSI and QinetiQ North America, received the order in May 2013.

“We have been working closely with IPA and CSI to assist the Turkish Government establish an enhanced route and area clearance capability because of the threats that exist on their southern borders; we look to further support this capacity as it is established across their military.” said Tom Thebes, CSES Acting President. “The NIITEK® GPR is a critical component in the war against mines and IEDs and this award represents a significant step in supporting the international Counter-IED mission and the ultimate goal of saving lives.”

Oshkosh Defense L-ATV Makes European Debut

10.09.2013 Oshkosh - army-guide.com

The L-ATV offers advanced troop protection against IEDs and other battlefield threats

OSHKOSH, Wis. -- Global military forces require a mobile, protected and lightweight vehicle to navigate the unpredictable combination of terrain, tactics and threats they face in current and future missions. Oshkosh Defense, a division of Oshkosh Corporation, is ready to meet that need with the Oshkosh Light Combat Tactical All-Terrain Vehicle (L-ATV).

The company is exhibiting the vehicle for the first time in Europe at the DSEI 2013 defence and security exhibition, Sept. 10-13 in London.

The Oshkosh L-ATV can help fill a vital capabilities gap for protection and mobility that global militaries face with their current light-vehicle fleets. Many historical light vehicle fleets, such as the High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), Eagles and Land Rovers, are nearing the end of their useful life cycle and were never designed to accommodate the armour and equipment that is needed for modern conflicts.

“The ability to operate on a battlefield with a wide range of threats and terrain is increasingly critical for forces around the globe,” said John Urias, Oshkosh Corporation executive vice president and president of Oshkosh Defense. “The L-ATV was specifically designed to fulfil that mission. The platform offers unprecedented levels of protection and off-road mobility to navigate even the harshest environments.”

The L-ATV’s superior mobility is largely attributable to the Oshkosh TAK-4i intelligent independent suspension system. The TAK-4i system expands on the success of the proven TAK-4® system to deliver more than 50 centimetres of independent wheel travel – a 25 per cent increase over currently fielded vehicles. The TAK-4i system enables the L-ATV to shift power to the wheels that are in contact with the ground to provide control and manoeuvrability on dangerous terrain.

The L-ATV offers advanced troop protection against IEDs and other battlefield threats with a scalable armoured capsule optimized for protection, weight and mobility. The capsule’s modular, adaptable design can accept multiple armour configurations, allowing the vehicle to accept future enhancements.

Oshkosh Defense can deliver L-ATV fleets with fully integrated and tested command, control, communications and computer (C4) equipment. This includes factoring the mechanical, electrical and user interfaces into the vehicle design process to optimize overall system performance and the user experience. Oshkosh performs C4 installation in-house, either during the production process or after, to reduce time and costs. Oshkosh integrated C4 systems into the Oshkosh M-ATV, which contributed to the vehicle being designed, produced and delivered at a rate of more than 1,000 per month – all in less than one year.

“We blended the latest design and proven technologies in the L-ATV to create a vehicle with superior performance and reduced sustainment costs,” added Serge Buchakjian, senior vice president and general manager of international programs for Oshkosh Defense. “Our global life-cycle support offerings, from training and parts supply to maintenance support and remanufacturing, help keep vehicle fleets at peak readiness anywhere the mission requires.”

Virtual Training Improves Fleet Readiness and Reduces Costs

In addition to the L-ATV, Oshkosh will display a technology kiosk at DSEI featuring the Oshkosh Virtual Trainer Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT) module. The Oshkosh Virtual Trainer provides life-like training in a safe, virtual environment, while providing troops the skills they need to perform actual tasks. Oshkosh currently offers the Virtual Trainer for multiple HEMTT configurations and has found it can provide a 20 per cent or more cost savings compared to a traditional classroom-only training approach.

The Oshkosh Virtual Trainer is part of Oshkosh’s Integrated Product Support (IPS) offerings, a comprehensive vehicle-service portfolio designed to optimize fleet readiness and life-cycle costs. Oshkosh IPS offerings include training services, instruction manuals, maintenance and repairs, parts supply, and fleet restoration services. Oshkosh has been executing a successful 20-year service plan for the British Armed Forces’ Wheeled Tanker program since 2003. This has included the development of training manuals, maintenance support and integrated logistics support for the fleet of approximately 350 vehicles.

Oshkosh Defense leadership will be available to discuss vehicles, technologies and training capabilities at DSEI at booth #N4-160 in the ExCeL London Exhibition and Convention Centre.

Russian Firm to Unveil BMPT-72 Tank

Sept. 6, 2013 defense-aerospace.com

(Source: Uralvagonzavod; web-posted Sept. 5, 2013)

RAE 2013: Terminator-2 World Premiere

A world premiere will take place on the first day of the 9th International Exhibition of Arms, Military Equipment and Ammunition - Russia Arms EXPO 2013 (RAE 2013) on September 25, 2013.

Research and Production Corporation Uralvagonzavod will present its latest design - Tank Support Fighting Vehicle BMPT-72. BMPT-72 is a breakthrough modernization of the world-famous Uralvagonzavod T-72 tank. When designing BMPT-72, engineers relied on experience of creation and exploitation of BMPT, also known as Terminator for its gun power.

Just as its basic model, Terminator-2 is a multipurpose tank and infantry fire support vehicle that can operate in any combat mode, complicated geographic area, light conditions and against any enemy. Still, it has some new features: upgraded fire-control system and turret weapon station protection. The breakthrough vehicle is built on the platform of the most widely manufactured and used T-72 tank.

Given that, the key advantage that BMPT-72 gives to all the counties that operate T-72 tanks, is that they can promptly and at minimum cost upgrade their armies to ultra-modern level, enhance its capacity, mobility, protection and armament without purchasing new high cost machines.

Terminator-2 is to premiere in a multimedia lightshow at a 900 m2 presentation centre built especially for that purpose. Foreign visitors and official delegation are expected to attend the presentation.

India's Arjun Mk2 Main Battle Tank performance assessment trials are now concluding, paving the way for the design to soon enter Indian Army service, providing a large order is forthcoming.

Based on the Arjun MBT, the Mk2 variant of India's almost 40-year-old tank design boasts several new features. Modifications to its firing system have reduced its overall weight from 64 tonnes to around 55 tonnes, while it also has an improved missile-firing capability, new navigation and power generation systems and anti-tank mine detection lasers.

Listing the differences between the Arjun and its successor, Indian officials have previously managed to come up with some 90 new enhancements integrated into the upgraded model.

Arjun Mk2 MBT

Now, the Arjun Mk2 MBT is nearing the end of an extensive test programme, launched in June 2012.

In a statement on the upgraded Arjun tank trials, one defence official told the Times of India: "We are satisfied with the end product and its results, making it one of the most potent combat tanks for the army with unmatched automatic target detection and destruction, while offering maximum protection to the crew."

A representative from DRDO (the Defence Research and Development Organisation, which developed the Arjun) added: ''If the army is satisfied, the order of 500 should be placed in one go, since that would save time for various formalities and procedures of a fresh order."

Arjun Main Battle Tank

Right now, about 124 Arjun Main Battle Tanks serve with the Indian Army. The Arjun Mk2 is set to enter series production in 2014, while other tank designs in Indian Army service include the T-90S Bhishma and the T-72 Ajeya.

DRDO is tasked with developing the Indian Armed Forces' next-generation military technologies. Established in 1958, it has a workforce of 30,000 (including 7,000 military scientists) and it works in the fields of aeronautics, weaponry, naval systems, combat vehicles and much more besides.

Turkey Reinforces Syria Border as Erdogan Backs US Attack

September 6th, 2013 defencetalk.com

Turkey deployed tanks and anti-aircraft guns to reinforce its military units on the Syrian border, as the U.S. considers strikes against Syria.

Convoys carrying tanks and rocket-launchers headed to border areas in Hatay, Gaziantep and Sanliurfa provinces today and yesterday, according to Hurriyet newspaper and Anatolia news agency. Tanks, missile launchers and anti-aircraft guns on hilltops near the border town of Kilis were aimed Syria, state-run TRT television said. F-16s, tanker and cargo planes as well as at least one drone landed at southern Incirlik Air Base, Anatolia said.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has expressed a willingness to join any international coalition against Syria, yesterday vowed to respond to any attack from its southern neighbor. He spoke after Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al-Mekdad was cited by the Wall Street Journal as saying that Syria will strike U.S. allies Israel, Jordan and Turkey if the Obama administration attacks his country over its alleged use of chemical weapons on Aug. 21.

Critical Solutions International (CSI) has received a contract for supply of its two-operator Husky Mark III vehicle mounted mine detectors (VMMDs) to the Turkish Army.

Awarded to CSI's distributor IPA Defence and its strategic partner DCD Protected Mobility, the unspecified contract covers the supply of four Husky vehicles to help enhance mine and improvised explosive device (IED) detection, interrogation and clearance capabilities of the Turkish military.

Vehicles supplied under the contract will be fitted with several mission equipment packages, such as the Fassi M20AL lightweight composite interrogation arm, QinetiQ-NA-built rocket-propelled grenade net protection system (Q-Net), as well as a 360° situational awareness camera system, jointly manufactured by CSI and Torc Robotics.

CSI's CEO, Mike McCormack, said the Husky vehicle selection represents Turkish government's significant investment in saving lives and improving the capability of the national army.

''The two-operator Husky vehicle, equipped with the Fassi Interrogation Arm, Q-Net and a 360° camera system provides the essential technology for threat detection and interrogation, and will help protect the lives of service members and civilians,'' McCormack said.

''The IED is also not limited to recent US theatres of combat operations and international militaries are increasingly recognising the need to have this life-saving advanced detection capability.''

The Husky MK III VMMD is a single occupant mine-resistant landmine and IED detection vehicle, designed to enable rapid and efficient route clearance by creating safe passage for military convoys and civilian vehicles in both rural and urban environments.

An upgraded version of Husky VMMD, Husky MK III features a V-shaped hull to deflect any blast away from the operator and is also capable of rolling over a pressure-sensitive explosive device without triggering an explosion.

More than 500 Husky MK III vehicles have been used to date for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Indian T-90s Get 5,000 Meter Reach

September 4, 2013: Strategy Page

India recently revealed that it had negotiated a manufacturing license to build 15,000 Russian Invar anti-tank missiles in India where they are used by T-90 tanks. India has earlier purchased 10,000 of these missiles from Russia (that were built in Russia) and with the manufacturing license the average cost will be about $2,000 per missile.

The Invar 9M119M1 (Invar-M) is fired from the 125mm gun, like a shell, but operates like a guided missile. The 17.2 kg (37.8 pound) missile is 680mm (26.7 inches) long and has pop-out fins (with a 250mm/9 inch span) that aid in guidance (laser beam riding, controlled by the tank gunner). The missile has a max range of 5,000 meters at a speed of 350 meters a second (14 seconds max flight time). The Invar enables the tank to hit targets at twice the range of the 125mm shells. The tandem warhead can penetrate up to 900mm of armor (35.4 inches). Invar has been around for two decades and India is buying the latest version, as well as the license to manufacture another 15,000 of them.

T-90C_India source defense update

T-90C_India source defense update

India expects to have about 1,400 T-90s by the end of the decade. The first T-90 entered service in 1993, and India is the largest user. The T-90 is basically an upgraded T-72, which India already builds under license. The T-90 weighs about 15 percent more than the 41 ton T-72. The T-90 has a better fire control system, night vision that is good out to about 1,500 meters, and electronic countermeasures against anti-tank missiles. The autoloader, which often failed in the T-72, is more reliable and that makes the three man crew (commander, gunner, driver) more effective. The T-90 has ERA (Explosive Reactive Armor) in addition to its composite armor.

The T-90 is not as lively as the T-72 and is actually slower on the battlefield than the U.S. M-1 (which has a horsepower to weight ratio of 24:1, compared to only 18:1 for the T-90). The 125mm gun of the T-90 is basically the same as the T-72. However, if you use better ammo, you stand a chance against top rated tanks like the M-1. But that is not what India expects to face. The most likely opponent is Pakistan, which is largely equipped with 1950s era T-55s (actually the Chinese T-59 copy). The Pakistanis also have 700 or so older T-72 type tanks (Chinese T-69 and Ukrainian T-80), but these would be outclassed by the T-90. India plans to have 21 tank battalions ("regiments" in the Indian army) of T-90s (with 62 tanks each) by 2020. Actually, each battalion only has 45 tanks going into combat. The other 17 are for training and replacements.
