Merkava Mk. IV equipped with Trophy APS

30/6/2012 IsraelDefense

Brigadier General (Res.) Amir Nir, CEO of Kinetics, discusses the company’s development paths following the departure of US forces from Iraq

Brigadier General (Res.) Amir Nir recalls, “Dozens of 4x4 and 8x8 vehicles were presented at the 2005 Eurosatory Air Show in Paris, but not a single tank was present. The world was heading in the direction of light vehicles at the time, including the IDF.” In 2005, Nir headed the Merkava Tank Planning Directorate, run by the IDF and the Israeli Ministry of Defense.

“When I saw the trend, I was certain that tanks and APCs would not find their way out of service so quickly due to the simple reason that the technologies that were intended to serve light vehicles did not exist. In order to have effective shielding against a kinetic threat, a hollow charge, or roadside explosive charges, you need to invest considerable funds.

“It’s no coincidence that the IDF’s Kela multi-year plan, which was supposed to reduce the number of tanks, was cancelled. The Future Combat System project also fell apart in the US, and other projects that were headed in the same direction were either cancelled or postponed. The US Army updated its plans long ago, and it seems that for the moment, the use of tanks and heavy platforms will continue, at least until 2050. As such, this whole concept of tanks being old-fashioned is irrelevant.”

Kinetics specializes in the development of air filtration NBC protection systems for the IDF’s armored vehicles. It also provides different solutions such as Heating Ventilation & Air Conditioning systems, personal air conditioners attached to the suits of armored IDF fighters, and auxiliary power units (APU) for AFVs. Kinetics also provides various filtration and air-conditioning systems to the US Army.

The company sold more than 15,000 systems for the MRAP vehicles used in Iraq. Although it developed APU models that were supposed to be installed on Abrams tanks, this decision was recently reexamined. “We’re using our qualitative capabilities in the field of life-support systems and putting them to use in simpler applications for ground instruments in the tactical field and for combat-supporting logistic vehicles,” Nir says.

How has the departure of US forces from Iraq affected Kinetics?

“We aren’t fond of this development, but that’s the reality, and as a result, we've approached other markets. We haven't given up on the US market, it remains a very important market for us, but we’re active in other areas today and are going to places where we never set foot before.

Turkey is looking to buy a new long-range air-defense missile system soon, the country’s Defense Procurement Agency has announced. The news comes as relations with neighboring Syria grow increasingly tense.

The Turkish move is part of a move to strengthen the country's military.   Currently, Turkey’s armed forces do not have a long-range missile system.

On Thursday Turkish officials confirmed the deployment of anti-aircraft batteries close to the border with Syria.

This is seen as a response to the latest incident between the two countries when Syria shot down a Turkish warplane which had stranded into the Syrian territory. Turkey has been pushing NATO to treat Syria's actions as an attack on the alliance.

Companies likely to compete for the $4 billion contract include Raytheon and Lockheed Martin of the United States, Rosoboronexport of Russia, CPMIEC of China and the French-Italian consortium, Eurosam.

A Western diplomatic source told AFP a shortlist would be announced on July 11 or 12.

He also said that France has a good chance of winning the order as the country’s new President Francois Hollande – unlike his predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy – does not plan to make denial of the Armenian genocide a criminal offence.

China and Russia are unlikely to succeed as neither of them belongs to NATO. Turkish media say this is likely to influence the decision of Turkey, which is a member of the alliance.

ANKARA, 29 juin - RIA Novosti

speedboats belonging to Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps

Jun 29, 2012 presstv.ir

A senior commander of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) says the Islamic Republic is the military power that will set the rules of engagement if a war breaks out in the region.

IRGC Navy Commander Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi on Friday pointed to the Islamic Republic’s self-sufficiency in manufacturing military equipment and its upper hand given the geopolitical conditions in the Persian Gulf region, IRNA reported.

“We have mounted missiles longer than 220 km in range on our vessels -- not the world’s regular and conventional vessels, but very small ones with high speed and great maneuvering and firing capabilities,” Fadavi stated.

The commander referred to the large number of IRGC naval boats in the Persian Gulf as another indication of IRGC’s strength “beyond the enemy’s imagination,” and expressed hope that the navy will be able to equip its vessels with more Iranian-made missiles with a range of 300 km.

Fadavi further rejected the Western description of classical and guerilla warfare, saying that the Iranian forces do not "…need … to play in the enemy's court, and according to their definitions and rules of the game.”

“...At present, the conditions are such that we define the court and set the rules of the game because we are not near the US but they have come to our vicinity in … the Persian Gulf,” he said.

AIM-9X-2-Sidewinder source info-aviation

June 29, 2012: Strategy Page

Oman has ordered 55 American AIM-9X-2 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles, plus 36 training missiles as well as maintenance and support equipment. Oman bought twelve F-16C fighters a decade ago, along with some AIM 9M missiles. Last year, another 18 F-16s were ordered, mainly to replace aging Jaguar and Hawk warplanes. Omani pilots have become aware of how much better the 9X-2 version is, leading to the latest missile order.

The latest version of the Sidewinder, the AIM-9X-2, has come a long way from the first Sidewinder of the 1950s. The 9X-2 can lock-on-after-launch. That is, the missile can be fired and then directed to a target via a datalink. That means it can be fired at ground targets or at an enemy aircraft behind you. The X-2 version also makes improvements in the warhead fuze and other components. As impressive as all these features most are already found in similar missiles made in several other countries (including Russia and China). In effect, the X-2 version is just keeping up. What the U.S. sells, in addition, is an impressive track record of reliability and actually performing as expected in combat. Over 4,000 X model Sidewinders have been built since it entered service in 2003. Block II (X-2) entered service four years ago and cost about half a million dollars each.

The AIM-9 is a heat seeking missile, and the heat sensors have become much more sensitive since the first AIM-9 entered service half a century ago. The current versions of the missile work by detecting a heat source at the point where the pilot is looking. This is done using the JHMCS (Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing Systems), which allows a pilot to see, displayed on his visor, critical flight and navigation information. Sort of like a see-through computer monitor or HUD (Head Up Display). Most importantly, the pilot can turn his head towards a target, get an enemy aircraft or ground target into the crosshairs displayed on the visor and fire a missile that will promptly go after target the pilot was looking at. For Sidewinder the pilot has to be looking at something giving off enough heat to catch the attention of the missile's heat sensor. With the X-2 Sidewinder the pilot can launch the missile before he has located the target via the JHMCS, saving a critical few seconds.

The JHMCS is already used with some air-to-ground missiles, although no special air-to-ground software was needed for Sidewinders fired at ground targets. Instead, the air-to-air software was modified. This is important because one of the reasons for this mod was to give the F-15C, which carries no air-to-ground weapons (it's strictly an air-to-air fighter) some air-to-ground capability. In addition, fighter-bombers (like the F-18, F-16, F-22, and F-35) will now be able to use their air-to-air weapons in a pinch, once all their actual air-to-ground weapons are gone.

Although over half a century old, the Sidewinder has been the most effective air-to-air missile ever produced. The first Sidewinder (AIM-9B) was 3 meters (9.3 feet) long, weighed 71 kg (156 pounds), and had a max range of five kilometers. The most current model, the AIM-9X, is the same size, weighs 87 kg (191 pounds), and has a max range of over 20 kilometers. All models have a warhead weighing about 10 kg (22 pounds). The AIM-9X can go after the target from all angles, while the AIM-9B could only be used from directly behind the target. The AIM-9X is about seven times more likely to bring down the target than the AIM-9B. The 9X entered service in 2000, but the older 9M is nearly as accurate, although without the additional flexibility and capabilities.

While air force planners would like to do away with short range, heat seeking missiles, depending on longer ranged, radar guided missiles instead, that is not likely to happen any time soon. Radars and other sensors are still not reliable enough to prevent hostile aircraft from first becoming aware of each other when they are quite close. At that point the cheaper, smaller and increasingly very capable heat seekers are the weapon of choice.

Syria

MOSCOU, 28 juin - RIA Novosti

As tensions between Ankara and Damascus rise over the downed fighter jet, Turkey has sent tanks and other armored vehicles to the Syrian border, amid belligerent threats of retaliation.

The heavily guarded convoy that departed from the city of Diyarbakir reportedly included 15 armored tanks, long-distance guns and other military vehicles, Dogan news agency reports.

This comes as Turkey’s Prime Minster Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned that any Syrian forces approaching the Turkish border would be treated as a direct threat. Addressing the Turkish parliament on Tuesday, Erdogan lashed out at Syria, saying it poses a threat to Turkey’s national security and calling the Syrian government tyrants.

Tensions between the neighboring countries escalated after Syria shot down a Turkish military plane on Friday. Syria insists the plane was still in its territory when its air defense forces engaged it, citing the fact that it was shot down by an artillery gun with a maximum range of 2.5 kilometers rather than a longer-range surface-to-air missile.

The Turkish prime minister has reiterated an earlier assessment that the plane was downed after leaving Syrian airspace, saying Turkey has proof of this.

War orchestration?

Author and radio talk-show host Dr. Kevin Barrett believes that the excitement over the fighter jet downing incident has all the marks of a typical war orchestration event.

“The people who want war try to use every sort of immediate inflammation of people’s emotions around in this case of the shooting down of the plane to rally public opinion for war,” he told RT.

However, Barrett remains optimistic saying that “now we are several days past that point” and things may move back on track towards negotiations.

“The Turkish people never wanted war,” he insists, citing opinion polls that indicate that Turks oppose intervention in Syria by more than a two-thirds majority and want their government to play a more balanced role.

There is no chance that violence can bring about any solution to the crisis due to Syria’s internal political complexity, Barrett says, stressing that there is no alternative to Kofi Annan’s six-point peace plan. “Everybody has to back down from the tension around this fighter jet shooting down incident and get serious about peace.”

Turkey deployed anti-aircraft guns and other weapons alongside its border with Syria, state television reported on Thursday, days after the downing of a Turkish military jet by Syrian forces heightened the tensions between the two countries.

A small convoy of military trucks, towing anti-aircraft guns, entered into a military outpost in the border village of Guvecci, which faces a Syrian military outpost across the border and where Syrian forces and rebels clashed in recent months, TRT television footage showed.

Several anti-aircraft guns have also been deployed elsewhere alongside the border. Some trucks were seen carrying self-propelled multiple rocket launchers, TRT footage showed.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned Tuesday that any Syrian military unit approaching its border will be treated as a direct threat. Turkey's NATO allies have expressed solidarity with Ankara and condemned the Syrian attack but made no mention of any retaliatory action against Syria.

The deployment came before President Abdullah Gul chaired a National Security Council meeting on Thursday, TRT said. The meeting, attended by cabinet members and the military's top brass, is expected to focus on tensions with Syria.

Turkey and Syria had cultivated close ties before the Syrian revolt began in March 2011, but since then Turkey has become one of the strongest critics of Syria's regime and repeatedly called on Syria's President Bashar Assad to step down. Approximately 33,000 Syrians have sought refuge in Turkey.

Turkey is also hosting civilian opposition groups as well as hundreds of army defectors who are affiliated with the Free Syrian Army and collect food and other supplies to deliver to comrades on smuggling routes.

A Syrian minister said Wednesday his country's forces may have mistaken the Turkish plane they shot down for an Israeli one.

Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoebi was quoted as telling Turkish news channel A Haber in a telephone interview Wednesday that his country did "not want a crisis between Turkey and Syria."

Al-Zoebi said Turkish and Israeli fighter jets were mostly U.S.-made, which may have led the Syrian forces to mistake it for an Israeli jet.

Syria insists the Turkish military plane violated its air space on Friday. Turkey says that although the jet had unintentionally strayed into Syria's air space, it was inside international airspace when it was brought down over the Mediterranean by Syria.

The search for two missing pilots was underway in Syrian waters but hopes dimmed for their survival, Turkish authorities said.

Knowledgeable sources say that Russia and Israel are expected to develop a UAV together, one that will suit Russia’s operational needs

Two days ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Israel for a visit in which pressing defense issues were discussed extensively, including the Iranian threat and the Syrian civil war.

It now seems that the cooperation between Israel and Russia is expected to expand in the defense field. Knowledgeable sources say that both countries are expected to develop at least one kind of UAV – one that will suit Russia’s operational needs.

Two years ago, Russia signed a deal for the acquisition of UAVs at a scope of $400 million from Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). The deal included the Searcher-2 and Bird Eye 400 UAV models, as well as the construction of an assembly and production line in Russia.

Now the possibility of expanding cooperation is on the agenda again. Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Dimitry Rogozin, recently expressed his satisfaction with the Israeli-Russian cooperation in the field of UAVs, and sources close to the issue have said that the forming cooperation is part of a greater “strategic understanding,” that serves both sides on a variety of issues. According to foreign sources, one example of this is Russia’s decision not to sell several variants of antiaircraft missiles to Iran.

The planned cooperation will also include the transfer of technologies pertaining to UAV production.

Syrian Air Force Ensign.svg

June 28, 2012: Strategy Page

On June 21st, a Syrian Air Force colonel, flying a MiG-21, flew to Jordan and received political asylum. The colonel joined over 100,000 other Syrian civilians who had fled to Jordan. This was the first time a Syrian Air Force pilot had defected with his warplane. Some 40 other Syrian officers, mainly from the army, have defected, usually to Turkey, in the last year.

The MiG-21 is a 1950s design and most current users are phasing them out. But because Syria is so poor, their 150 MiG-21s are still the most abundant aircraft in their air force. Fewer and fewer of these MiG-21s are flyable. There are also a hundred 1960s era MiG-23s, ten MiG-25s and 40 MiG-29s. There are also 20 Su-24 and 60 Su-22 ground attack aircraft. All Syrian aircraft are showing their age, except for the MiG-29s, which are relatively new. Lack of money has meant few flying hours for air force pilots and not enough money to keep all aircraft flyable. Fuel and spare parts are expensive and the air force has a hard time dealing with the payroll the expense of running its bases.

So far, the Syrians have not used their fixed wing aircraft to attack the population that has been in rebellion for over 16 months. Some helicopters have been used, but with this defection, the air force commanders are less likely to trust other pilots. The Syrian Air Force has a dismal record, although their primary opponent for over half a century has been Israel. The Assad family has occasionally used the air force against the Syrian people, and seems reluctant to unleash hundreds of combat aircraft on civilians.

Mi-25-source-RN.jpg

ZHUKOVSKY, June 28 (RIA Novosti)

The first consignment of three Mil Mi-25 helicopter gunships for Syria has been overhauled and will be delivered to the customer within the contracted time, a senior arms official said on Thursday.

The contract for the repair of the helicopters was signed by Russia and Syria in 2008, Federal Service for Military Technical Cooperation director Alexander Fomin said.

"Syria is our friend, and we we fulfil all our obligations to our friends. According to the 2008 contract, we repaired three Mi-25s and are ready to deliver them on time," Fomin said on the sidelines of the Technology in Machine-Building 2012 exhibition at Zhukovsky near Moscow.

Fomin did not, however, disclose the overall number of helicopters in the contract. Media reports claiming Russia was to deliver 36 helicopters were false, he added.

The helicopters became the center of a diplomatic row earlier this month, with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton claiming Russia was supplying weapons that would be used to massacre civilian protesters.

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov denied the claim, saying the helicopters had originally been supplied in the Soviet-era and were being returned to Syria under an existing contract. He also said military equipment being supplied to Syria was defensive in nature and could not be used against civilians.

A ship which was carrying the helicopters from Russia's exclave of Kaliningrad to Syria turned back last week and docked in Murmansk, after the British insurer of the vessel withdrew cover after being informed of the cargo.

SAMP - source Secret Défense

June 27, 2012 strategicdefenceintelligence.com

Turkey's Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has agreed to restore military relations covering all arms deals with France, improving the chances of a French bid to fulfil a missile defence tender.

Relations became strained in December 2011 when the French parliament voted in favour of a law to make it illegal to deny the killings of Armenians in Turkey’s predecessor the Ottoman Empire during World War I.

The country's foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu told Turkish media that the sanctions were lifted by the Prime Minister following a positive meeting with French president, Francois Hollande, during a world summit in Brazil.

The move is expected to enable European missile manufacturer Eurosam to compete for Turkey’s nearly US$4 billion Long-Range Air and Missile Defence Systems (LORAMIDS) contract.

Eurosam, whose shareholders include MBDA, Finmeccanica, EADS and Thales, was never officially excluded from the competition, but the legislation made it unlikely for a contract award.

Other contenders include US companies Raytheon and Lockheed Martin with a Patriot-based system, Russia’s Rosoboronexport with S-300 and S-400 systems, and China Precision Machinary Import and Export Corp (CPMIEC) offering its HQ-9 system.

Turkey’s top arms procurement body is expected to hold a meeting this month to finalise the winner of the LORAMIDS contract.

Expert says Turkish was not aware Syrian forces capable of intercepting enemy planes flying under radar. US officials: Damascus beefed up missile defense after Israel bombed reactor

Syrian news outlets quoted a military expert as saying that the anti-aircraft weapons used to down a Turkish fighter jet last weekend were made in Iran, Al-Quds al-Arabi reported Wednesday.

According to the Arabic newspaper, the Syrian expert said Damascus purchased an Iranian-made anti-aircraft gun two years ago. He said the gun can be mounted on armored vehicles.

The expert said the downed Turkish jet flew at a low altitude so as not to be detected by the Syrian radar. However, the expert said, the Turkish crew was not aware that the Syrian air force was in possession of a weapon capable of intercepting planes flying at such a low altitude.

'Syrian system is much more dense'

Meanwhile, the Seattle Times quoted American security officials as saying that Syria's downing of the Turkish jet showed its military is capable of mounting a sophisticated defense against potential enemies, thus "complicating a Libyan-style intervention."

The US officials said Syria's air defense systems have been beefed up by purchases from Russia following the bombing a Syrian nuclear reactor under construction five years ago. Foreign media said the attack was carried out by Israel.

US military officials were quoted as saying that, at least on paper, the Syrian air defenses appear to be far more robust than those encountered by NATO in Libya and stronger than even Iran's.

"I can name you worse (systems), but they are in places like China," said an Air Force official.

According to the Seattle Times, defense officials and military analysts say defeating Syria's air defenses would require a sustained US military effort that would probably lead to civilian casualties.

The report said most defense analysts claim the Syrian system is similar to the Iranian air defenses in terms of technology, but they suggested that Syrian version is more effective because it is concentrated in a smaller area.

"The Iranians have a huge geographic area to cover, which creates gaps that you can fly through and around," said Jeffrey White, a fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and a former Defense Intelligence Agency analyst. "The Syrian system is much more dense."

The experts said the Syrian air defenses are also more tightly integrated than the Iraqi or the Libyan systems, allowing Syrian military officers at disparate sites to share targeting information gleaned from radar.

mi-25-3
