Helicopter Pilots to Join Air Combat Training

IAI is extending the functionality of its Ehud Air Combat Maneuvering System (ACMI) with the introduction of new training pods designed for combat and assault helicopters. The new pod designated THRUST is modeled like a Hellfire missile, and is carried on AH-64 Apache gunships on standard weapon stations. A strap-down configuration is used for UH-60 or Mi-17 installation.

Man Portable Air Defense Systems (MANPADS) are commonly used to protect mobile, deployed forces, or defend point targets and strategic sites. Although technically capable to intercept combat aircraft and helicopters, human factors critical limit the use of MANPADS to very short range. At Aero-India 2011 Israel Military Industries (IMI) is introducing the new and improved Red-Sky 2, which converts existing or new MANPADS into an integrated air defense system, centrally controlled and enhanced with passive (FLIR) and active (radar) sensors, and semi-automatic engagement features maximizing the probability of intercept with available assets. Red Sky 2 can be adapted to operate with all types of IR guided missiles – Igla type systems, Mistral or Stinger.

At Aero-India 2011 Controp is introducing two new stabilized EO systems, optimized for vehicular platforms. The new, remotely controlled, gyro-stabilized Modular Electro-Optical System (MEOS). The system employs an open architecture similar to Controp’s CEDAR product line, yet MEOS also features a two-axis gyro-stabilized platform, enabling installation on vehicular platforms, as well as elevated mast mounting. The system employs day and night imaging devices integrating CCD daylight sensor, Infrared night imager and a laser rangefinder.

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) is introducing at Aero-India a new class of aerial vehicles employing a revolutionary three tilting propellers design. This new propulsion concept enables the vehicle to take-off and land vertically, fly at high speed, or hover efficiently for extended period. By employing two tilt-rotor propellers, and a vertical lift augmenter propeller, providing additional lift and stability for hovering, takeoff and landing. The unique design is optimized for extended missions of several flight hours. The new design is representing a breakthrough in Vertical Take off and Landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) architecture. This configuration enables the aircraft to be runway-independent, taking off and landing from unprepared areas, providing land forces and special operations units at tactical level capabilities commonly associated with much larger platforms.

Northrop Grumman Showcases Defence and Homeland Security Capabilities at IDEX 2011

ABU DHABI – Feb. 12, 2011 – Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) will highlight a wide range of defence and security infrastructure system solutions, including airborne early warning and control systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, fire control radars and electronic warfare systems at the International Defence Exhibition & Conference (IDEX) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). IDEX is the largest defence and security event in the Middle East and North African region and in 2011 celebrates its 10th anniversary. Knesset urges $1.4 billion Iron Dome buy

The Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee has recommended the military buy 13 batteries of the Iron Dome anti-missile system at a cost of $1.4 billion amid repeated warnings by military commanders of the threat of a major missile blitz. The acquisition of the controversial missile system built by state-owned Rafael Advanced Defense Systems will likely be spread over several years.

Les deux premières batteries du système Iron Dome devront être déployées le plus rapidement possible dans le sud d’Israël. C’est en substance le message transmis mercredi par une équipe de la commission des Affaires Etrangères et de la défense de la Knesset. Ils avaient été mandatés afin de réévaluer les besoins opérationnels liés à la prochaine mise en service du bouclier antimissile, conçu par la société Rafael. A la tête du comité de travail, Amir Peretz affirme qu’Israël doit se doter de 13 batteries Iron Dome dans les cinq années à venir, ce qui représente un coût global de 2,5 milliards de dollars (soit 9 milliards de shekels). Présentées à Shaul Mofaz et Avi Dichter, en charge de la commission parlementaire, ces recommandations viennent contredire l’avis de plusieurs experts militaires qui estiment que 20 unités du système sont nécessaires pour assurer une défense hermétique des frontières nord et sud de l’Etat hébreu.

ANKARA - Turkey will receive one additional S-70B Seahawk naval warfare helicopter from the U.S. manufacturer Sikorsky Aircraft because of a delay of more than a year in the delivery of 17 such platforms, one senior Turkish procurement official said Feb. 10. Turkey's Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM), the procurement agency, and Sikorsky Aircraft in November 2006 signed a contract worth over $550 million for the sale of 17 S-70B Seahawks.

IDEX 2011 to feature 151 exhibitors from the UAE

Abu Dhabi | The UAE will highlight its defence capabilities to the world with 151 companies from across the Emirates taking up indoor and outdoor exhibition space at the 10th International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX 2011), marking a 48 percent increase in the number of UAE participants compared to 102 UAE companies at IDEX’s last edition in 2009. IDEX 2011, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, will be hosted from February 20th to 24th, 2011 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, UAE. In total, more than 950 exhibitors are participating at the show representing more than 50 countries. More than 50,000 visitors are expected to attend including around 150 official delegations from around the world. IDEX 2011 is organized by ADNEC (Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company) in association with the UAE Armed Forces GHQ. At 10,299sqm, the UAE pavilion will be the largest national pavilion at IDEX 2011, and will host many of the 151 UAE exhibitors including: Tawazun Holding, Mubadala Development Company, Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, Etisalat, Griffon Aerospace, Thales Advanced Solutions LLC and Advanced Integrated Systems.

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) will present a new airborne navigation system called TNF- Tamam Navigation FOG (Fiber Optic Gyro( at the 8th International Exhibition on Aerospace, defense and Civil Aviation Aero India 2011, opens in Bangalore from February 9th to February 13th. TNF is an advanced lightweight, airborne navigation and Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS) for use in Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV), target drones, small aircraft and helicopters. It is also used for accurate targeting applications (INS-on-Gimbal) in stabilized electro-optical/infra-red (EO/IR) systems.

Il a suivi, depuis 2006, la création et la montée en puissance des forces de sécurité mises en place après la chute de Daddam Hussein. Il présente donc les unités de l'armée de terre, de la marine, de l'armée de l'air, des forces spéciales et de la police.

For the last four months, a detachment of five new American EA-18G electronic warfare aircraft have been operating in Iraq. Exactly what they are doing there is classified. The EA-18Gs are replacing the aging EA-6Bs that now provide electronic protection against enemy radars and missiles for navy and air force aircraft. The air force retired their EF-111 electronic warfare aircraft in 1994, on the assurance that the navy would get the EA-18G into service before the EA-6Bs died of old age. The older 27 ton EA-6B carries a crew of four, while the highly automated 29 ton EA-18G has only two people on board. The EA-18G carries up to five electronic warfare pods, plus two AMRAAM air-to-air missiles and two anti-radiation (HARM) missiles. It may be the last manned aircraft to handle the EW job. UAVs are becoming more capable, and will eventually take over this dangerous task.

Iran mass producing new anti-ship missiles

Iran is mass producing a new ballistic missile which can travel at more than three times the speed of sound and hit targets on the high seas, top commanders said on Monday. Commander Mohammad Ali Jafari, who heads the elite military force, the Revolutionary Guards, said the missile -- named "Persian Gulf" -- had a range of 300 kilometres (185 miles). "Iran is mass producing a smart ballistic missile for sea targets with a speed three times more than the speed of sound," state news agency IRNA quoted Jafari as saying about the new missile.

Elbit Systems Successfully Performs Joint Flight Missions of its Hermes 450 and Hermes 900 UAS

Elisra announces success of joint US-Israel exercise in Shared Active Defense battle lab

Elisra, had announced the success of a joint US-Israeli exercise which was carried out recently in its Active Defense Battle Lab, jointly shared by the Israeli Air Force (IAF), the Israeli Ministry of Defense (IMOD) and the US Department of Defense (DOD). The Active Defense Battle Lab is developed and maintained by Elisra’s Tadiran Electronics Systems Division since its inception in the early 90's, under contract with the Israeli Ministry of Defense (IMOD) and the US Missile Defense Agency (MDA). An end-to-end simulator of Theater Missile Defense, the Lab simulates attacks against defended assets, and the operation of defense systems against those attacks.

Iran showed off new missile and satellite technology, and told its enemies it had "complete domination" of the entrance to the oil-rich Gulf. As part of Iran's annual revolution celebrations, a time traditionally marked by new technological and military advances, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad unveiled locally-made satellites while a senior commander showed off mass produced missiles. "We should reach a point where we will be able to provide our knowledge and technology in the aerospace field to other countries," Ahmadinejad said in a speech, unveiling the satellites he said were for scientific purposes, and showing film of a satellite-carrier rocket, Reuters reports.

Iran demonstrated today a new type of short-range ballistic missile (SRBM) based on the Fatah 110 platform, capable of hitting targets at a range of up to 250-300 km with high precision. During an operational demonstration the missile was fired at a target vessel floating in the Persian Gulf, scoring a direct hit. Accordingly, the new missile was named ‘Persian Gulf (Khalij Fars).

France suspends arms sales to Egypt

France said on Saturday it had suspended sales of arms and riot police equipment to Egypt as fresh protests took hold of Paris pressing for veteran leader Hosni Mubarak to step down. The decision was taken by the prime minister's office at an extraordinary meeting on January 27, and was conveyed to those concerned the following day, an aide to Prime Minister Francois Fillon told AFP.

It would take Iran at least two years to produce a single nuclear weapon, according to a new in-depth report from the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). Although concerns have long been raised about Iran’s uranium enrichment programme – and major powers have sought to limit it through talks, sanctions and sabotage – officials and analysts have differed in their estimates of the timeline for an Iranian nuclear weapon. The latest IISS Strategic Dossier, Iran’s Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Capabilities: a net assessment is the most systematic and thorough public review of the evidence yet. It explains, in fact-rich detail that most government public estimates fail to provide, the assumptions and calculations behind the timelines. Vanguard Soldiers train Iraqis on M1A1 tank

Baghdad - The "Desert Lions" of Iraq's 34th Mechanized Brigade are now training with U.S. Soldiers to learn M1A1 Abrams tank skills at Camp Taji, Iraq. Since its reconstitution in 2003, the 9th Iraqi Army Division has used salvaged Russian T-72 tanks. Now, with cooperation from the United States, the division is taking a major step into the future by switching to the U.S.-designed M1A1 Abrams Main Battle Tank.
