The Australian Air Task Group (ATG) completed its first operational mission in Syria overnight, retuning to base in the Middle East without incident.

No weapons were released during the mission.

The mission provided on-call interdiction and dynamic targeting support as part of the international coalition’s effort to disrupt and degrade Daesh.

Two Royal Australian Air Force F/A-18A Hornets, a KC-30A air-to-air refuelling aircraft and E-7A Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft combined during the mission.

ATG Commander, Air Commodore Stu Bellingham said the Hornets searched points of interest for enemy activity in eastern Syria, reporting to the international coalition’s Combined Air Operations Centre through the E-7A aircraft.

“Daesh controls a large amount of territory in eastern Syria that serves as a source of recruitment and oil revenues, and as a base from which it continues to launch attacks into Iraq”, Air Commodore Bellingham said.

“The Hornets were also prepared for any short notice high priority tasking which could include surveillance and weapons release,” Air Commodore Bellingham said.

The KC-30A provided air-to-air refuelling support to the F/A-18A Hornets throughout the mission.

The ATG is part of Operation OKRA, the Australian Defence Force’s contribution to the international effort to combat the Daesh terrorist threat in Iraq and Syria.

The Australian ATG will continue to plan and conduct air strikes against Daesh in Iraq and Syria as part of coalition strike operations aimed at disrupting and degrading Daesh strongholds.

The Government of Australia has decided to extend its air strikes against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) into Syria, marking the next phase of the country's contribution to the international coalition effort.

According to the government, the decision comes as a response to Iraq's request for international assistance to strike ISIL (Daesh) strongholds, and a formal request from the US Government.

According to Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, the new military development was 'very much in Australia's national interest,' The Guardian reported.

Abbott was quoted as saying: "We cannot defeat Daesh in Iraq without defeating Daesh in Syria, too.

"I emphasise that our aircraft will be targeting Daesh, not the Assad regime, evil though it is."

The latest decision is expected to help protect Iraq and its people from Daesh attacks inside Iraq and from across the border in Syria, the Australian Government stated.

With this decision, Australia will join with countries including the US, Canada, France, Arab countries and Turkey in Syria to fight against ISIL.

Australia's Air Task Group that deployed to the Middle East region comprises six F/A-18 Hornet aircraft, a KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport and an E-7A Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft.

The decision to expand air operations comes days after France announced its plan to launch airstrikes against ISIL in Syria. France also said that the country would extend the mission to begin airstrikes later.

As part of this development, the French Air Force's two Rafale fighter aircraft recently performed more than six hours of flight over Syria, marking the country's first intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) mission.

A statement from the French Air Force stated that the mission allowed them to gather intelligence on the ISIL.

Inherent Resolve SITREP 09 sept. – CJTF-OIR

September 9, 2015 by CJTF-OIR Release # 20150909

Military Airstrikes Continue Against ISIL Terrorists in Syria and Iraq

SOUTHWEST ASIA – On Sep. 8, coalition military forces continued to attack ISIL terrorists in Syria and Iraq. In Syria, coalition military forces conducted three airstrikes using attack, bomber fighter and remotely piloted aircraft. Separately in Iraq, coalition military forces conducted 14 airstrikes coordinated with the government of Iraq using attack, bomber, fighter, fighter-attack and remotely piloted aircraft against ISIL targets.

In coordination with the Government of Iraq, the Coalition conducted airstrikes against an ISIL operating base located near Ramadi.

“Coalition strikes targeted and destroyed a large Daesh staging facility that housed weapons caches, combat equipment and included a multitude of prepared defensive positions” said Col. Michael Indovina, spokesman, CJTF-OIR. “This facility was a key Daesh command and supply hub in the Ramadi region and was being used to store large amounts of homemade explosives, as well as VBIED components. Destroying this facility enables Iraqi security forces activities in and around Ramadi while degrading Daesh command and control capability throughout the area.”

The following is a summary of the strikes conducted against ISIL since the last press release:

Syria

• Near Al Hawl, one airstrike destroyed three ISIL bunkers.

• Near Ar Raqqah, one airstrike struck an ISIL large tactical unit and an ISIL training camp and destroyed five ISIL fighting positions and an ISIL motorcycle.

• Near Mar’a, one airstrike struck an ISIL tactical unit and destroyed an ISIL front end loader.

Iraq

• Near Al Huwayjah, one airstrike struck an ISIL tactical unit.

• Near Bayji, one airstrike destroyed an ISIL VBIED.

• Near Fallujah, one airstrike struck an ISIL tactical unit and destroyed an ISIL building.

• Near Habbaniyah, two airstrikes destroyed an ISIL homemade explosives cache and an ISIL rocket rail.

• Near Kirkuk, one airstrike struck two ISIL heavy machine gun firing positions and an ISIL mortar firing position.

• Near Kisik, one airstrike struck an ISIL tactical unit and an ISIL heavy machine gun firing position and destroyed an ISIL fighting position.

• Near Ramadi, three airstrikes struck an ISIL tactical unit, an ISIL operating base and an ISIL staging area and destroyed five ISIL homemade explosives caches, two ISIL boats, an ISIL motorcycle and an ISIL vehicle.

• Near Sinjar, one airstrike struck an ISIL tactical unit and destroyed two ISIL fighting positions and two ISIL heavy machine guns.

• Near Tal Afar, two airstrikes struck an ISIL tactical unit and an ISIL mortar firing position and destroyed an ISIL bunker, an ISIL excavator, an ISIL fighting position, an ISIL trench and an ISIL weapons cache.

Airstrike assessments are based on initial reports. All aircraft returned to base safely.

The strikes were conducted as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the operation to eliminate the ISIL terrorist group and the threat they pose to Iraq, Syria and the wider international community.

The destruction of ISIL targets in Syria and Iraq further limits the group's ability to project terror and conduct operations. Coalition nations which have conducted airstrikes in Iraq include Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Jordan, Netherlands, United Kingdom and United States. Coalition nations which have conducted airstrikes in Syria include Bahrain, Canada, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and the U.S.

4  JOC : Joint Operation Centre.

20/07/15 7sur7.be
