Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Awards Leidos Prime Contract

RESTON, Va., Nov. 3, 2015 /PRNewswire

Solutions Company to Provide Research and Development in Support of the Shared Spectrum Access for Radar and Communications Program

Leidos (NYSE: LDOS), a national security, health, and engineering solutions company, was awarded a prime contract by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to provide research and development in support of Phase 2 for the Shared Spectrum Access for Radar and Communications (SSPARC) program. The single-award cost-plus fixed-fee contract has an eleven month base period of performance, an eleven month option, and a total contract value of approximately $14 million, if the option is exercised. Work will be performed primarily in Arlington, Va.

The SSPARC program seeks to improve radar and communications capabilities through spectrum sharing. In Phase 1 of the SSPARC effort the Leidos team proved, via a high-fidelity end-to-end simulation, that the minimum distance from military radar that commercial wireless may operate can be reduced 50x.  Two innovative interference mitigation mechanisms, coordinated frequency hopping and mainbeam avoidance were developed to allow shorter minimum stand-off distances. In Phase 2 of the contract, Leidos will perform laboratory testing and a field demonstration to validate the technology using real-time software with physical radar and communications systems.  If successful, the algorithms developed will allow increased radio frequency spectrum availability for both radar and communications systems, which is currently a significant operational constraint.

"We look forward to providing DARPA with real-time radio frequency management expertise to assist with the expansion of spectrum sharing between radar, military radios, and commercial wireless systems," said Leidos Group President, John Fratamico.

UK MoD announces contract to run military logistics

24 March 2015 From: Ministry of Defence and Philip Dunne MP

The Ministry of Defence has announced today that it intends to sign a 13-year logistics programme contract with Leidos following successful negotiations.

The Ministry of Defence has announced today that it intends to sign a 13-year logistics programme contract with Leidos following successful negotiations.

Confirmed last month to be the preferred bidder for the contract, Leidos will run and improve efficiencies in warehousing procurement and stock control of food, clothing, general and medical supplies as well as storage and distribution.

The contract is part of a transformation of the MOD’s Logistics Commodities and Services, known as LCS(T), and aims to provide these services in line with industry best practice while ensuring best value for money for the UK taxpayer.

The new arrangements will provide significant operational effectiveness by delivering improved responsiveness and agility to supplying our Armed Forces.

Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology, Philip Dunne MP, said:

I am pleased we are able to confirm this transaction with Leidos which will bring the military’s logistics, commodities and support services up to the standard of industry best practice, deliver more efficient and effective processes across the supply chain and enhance the quality of support provided to our Armed Forces.

This will generate significant savings of around £0.5 billion over the life of the contract, representing good value for money for the taxpayer and, in due course, will deliver state of the art fulfillment to our inventory management processes and systems. The transaction will involve the TUPE transfer of some 1,250 staff.

MOD Chief of Materiel (Land), Lieutenant General Sir Chris Deverell, said:

This contract meets the changing military requirements of our Armed Forces whilst also maintaining levels of quality and service.

By working with Leidos, we will introduce modernise our commodity procurement, warehousing, and distribution and secure a supply chain that will be responsive to the needs of the military, whilst at the same time saving money for Defence.

Team Leidos consists of Leidos, a US company, supported by its key subcontractors Kuehne+Nagel and TVS Supply Chain Solutions. Together they are a skilled and experienced team of private sector defence and logistic specialist partners with the global expertise to deliver the transformation required. The programme represents a significant financial investment in new facilities, including £90 million in the construction of a defence fulfilment centre next to the existing LCS site at Donnington in Shropshire, and £40 million in new IT systems to provide the modern and efficient logistics services that the UK Armed Forces need.

The contract award is planned for April 2015.

An autonomous unmanned vessel designed to track quiet diesel-electric submarines spanning miles of ocean depths for months at a time with minimal human input is now under construction and is expected to set sail for testing in 2015. Leidos, a national security, health and engineering solutions company, has begun construction on ACTUV (Autonomous Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel) under a Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) program for the design, development, and construction of a vessel originally conceived for an anti-submarine warfare mission.

"ACTUV's advanced sensor technology should allow for continuous surveillance which, combined with the vessel architecture and design, is expected to provide autonomous safe navigation supporting Navy missions around the world," said Leidos Group President, John Fratamico. ACTUV carries other sensors and mission packages designed to allow it to conduct a variety of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance and other alternate missions. With situational sensors that can ensure safe navigation, the ACTUV trimaran has electro optics, long range and short range radar.
