L'US Navy reçoit son premier drone Fire Scout opérationnel

Un peu plus d’un an après le premier vol du MQ-8C de Northrop Grumman, l’US Navy a reçu un premier exemplaire de l’hélicoptère dronisé dans sa version opérationnelle.

 

Les premiers essais en mer sont prévus cet hiver à partir du destroyer USS Jason Dunham. Le programme d’essais sera poursuivi jusqu’à l’été 2015. Le MQ-8C devrait être prêt pour une entrée en service à la fin de l’année prochaine, avec un retard de 12 mois sur l’objectif annoncé jusqu’alors.

Northrop to continue support for USAF Global Hawk systems

Northrop Grumman has been awarded a contract to continue the provision of logistics and sustainment services for the US Air Force's (USAF) RQ-4 Global Hawk unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).

 

Awarded by the US Department of Defense, the $306m contract continues an existing contract for Global Hawk maintenance, inventory management, parts procurement and other tasks necessary to ensure the availability of the unmanned platform.

 

In particular, the agreement covers the aircraft as well as mission control elements and forward-operating location support.

 

Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems Global Hawk director Mick Jaggers said: "In a turbulent world, Global Hawk's unparalleled reliability has made it an indispensable asset to the US Air Force.

 

"Our team takes great pride in supporting the warfighter with an aircraft system that is ready and available whenever and wherever it's needed."

 

Powered by an Allison Rolls-Royce AE3007H turbofan engine, the Global Hawk is a high-altitude, long-endurance UAS designed to provide field commanders with high-resolution, near real-time imagery of large geographic areas in support of military, humanitarian and environmental missions.

 

Capable of carrying a range of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance sensor payloads, the UAS enables commanders to detect moving or stationary targets on the ground, while providing airborne communications and information sharing capabilities to military units in harsh environments.

 

The remotely piloted system has been used by USAF during wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya, in addition to supporting intelligence gathering and reconnaissance efforts after the earthquakes in Haiti and Japan.

 

Global Hawk is also being used by NASA for scientific and environmental research projects.

 

Different variants of Global Hawk have to date flown more than 130,000 flight hours, supporting diverse missions worldwide.

MQ-8C Fire Scout completes "slope testing"

 

POINT MUGU, Calif. – Oct. 23, 2014 – Northrop Grumman

 

Northrop Grumman Corporation successfully completed precision sloped landing tests Aug. 27 with the MQ-8C Fire Scout at Naval Base Ventura County, Point Mugu, in preparation for at-sea testing.

 

MQ-8C Fire Scout has been undergoing rigorous flight testing and validation, which will culminate in the actual takeoff and landing on the deck of a Navy vessel at-sea. The MQ-8C is the company's latest variant of its successful Fire Scout unmanned aerial system, which performs intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions for the U.S. Navy.

 

"The sloped takeoff and landing tests are designed to be as real as it gets to actually operating on a Navy ship," said Capt. Patrick Smith, Fire Scout program manager at Naval Air Systems Command. "The autonomous MQ-8C Fire Scout system is able to precisely track and understand the roll and pitch of the surface which resembles at-sea conditions."

 

The sloped landing platform was previously used to test and certify the MQ-8B Fire Scout for ship-based operations and is now being used for the more capable MQ-8C. The MQ-8C is utilizing the same proven autonomous system for takeoff and landings as the current MQ-8B model.

"The MQ-8C Fire Scout system is performing as predicted and as previously demonstrated during Fire-X testing back in 2011," said George Vardoulakis, vice president for Medium Range Tactical Systems, Northrop Grumman. "These tests enable a validation of our autonomous system and clear the way for dynamic interface testing onboard the ship."

 

Since its first flight Oct. 31, 2013, the MQ-8C Fire Scout has flown 219 flights and 287 hours. The most recent tests on the MQ-8C have consisted of electromagnetic testing, which assured compatibility with ship-based emitters (like radar) and an initial phase of dynamic interface testing, which looked at deck handling and communications networks. The MQ-8C's first ship-based series of flights are planned for later this year.

L'Américain tué par balle et son collègue blessé mardi à Ryad étaient tous deux employés de Vinnell Arabia, un sous-traitant américain du secteur de la Défense, a indiqué le département d'Etat.

 

Un Américain a été tué par balle et un autre blessé mardi dans l'est de Ryad, lorsqu'ils ont été la cible de tirs dans une station service proche du siège de leur entreprise dans la capitale saoudienne, a précisé dans un communiqué la porte-parole du département d'Etat, Jennifer Psaki, ajoutant que l'ambassade des Etats-Unis avait renforcé ses mesures de sécurité en Arabie saoudite.

 

La société Vinnell Arabia travaille dans le cadre de programmes militaires de la Garde nationale saoudienne à Ryad, a précisé Mme Psaki.

 

Nous sommes en contact étroit avec le gouvernement saoudien pour continuer à rassembler des détails et les mobiles de cette fusillade, selon la porte-parole.

 

Elle a ajouté que Washington évaluait le dispositif de sécurité et prendrait toutes les mesures adéquates pour assurer la sûreté des employés de la mission américaine dans la capitale saoudienne, déjà sous très haute protection.

 

Un message a été transmis à tous les ressortissants américains dans le pays pour les informer de la situation et des mesures de précaution qu'ils devraient prendre, selon la porte-parole de la diplomatie américaine.

 

La police saoudienne avait annoncé plus tôt qu'un Américain avait été tué par balle et un autre blessé mardi dans l'est de Ryad, dans une rare attaque contre les Occidentaux en Arabie saoudite ces dernières années. La police de Ryad avait ajouté que l'assaillant avait été arrêté.

Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman Deliver Payload for Fourth SBIRS Missile Defense Early Warning Satellite

 

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Oct. 8, 2014 -- Lockheed Martin & Northrop Grumman

 

Prime contractor Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) and payload provider Northrop Grumman (NYSE:NOC) have delivered the payload for the fourth Geosynchronous Earth Orbit (GEO) satellite of the U.S. Air Force's Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS).

The payload, delivered on Sept. 30, will now be integrated with the SBIRS GEO-4 satellite bus in final assembly, integration and test at Lockheed Martin's Sunnyvale, California satellite manufacturing facility.

The SBIRS program delivers timely, reliable and accurate missile warning and infrared surveillance information to the President of the United States, the Secretary of Defense, combatant commanders, the intelligence community and other key decision makers. The system enhances global missile launch detection capability, supports the nation's ballistic missile defense system, expands the country's technical intelligence gathering capacity and bolsters situational awareness for warfighters on the battlefield.

The SBIRS GEO-4 payload includes highly sophisticated scanning and staring sensors, which will provide the satellite with improved infrared sensitivity and a reduction in area revisit times over the legacy constellation. The scanning sensor will provide a wide area surveillance of missile launches and natural phenomena across the earth, while the staring sensor will be used to observe smaller areas of interest with superior sensitivity.

"The completion of this payload is a critical milestone keeping us on schedule for delivering the SBIRS GEO-4 satellite to the Air Force in 2016," said Louie Lombardo, director of Lockheed Martin's SBIRS Follow-on Production (SFP) program. "This payload delivery -- the third of four payload deliveries for the SBIRS SFP program in the past 15 months -- further demonstrates that SBIRS is in the regular cadence of full production."

"This is an unprecedented production rate of sophisticated infrared payloads for operational deployment," said Anne Ostroff, vice president of the Military/Civil Space and Ground business area, Northrop Grumman. "The performance of payloads on-orbit has been excellent and demonstrates unique capabilities that are needed to address current and evolving threats."

The SBIRS architecture includes a resilient mix of satellites in GEO, hosted payloads in Highly Elliptical Orbit (HEO), and ground hardware and software. The GEO-1 and GEO-2 satellites have been launched and both received Air Force Space Command Operational Acceptance in 2013, with performance that matches, and in some cases exceeds, requirements. GEO-3 recently completed acoustic testing and is currently undergoing thermal vacuum testing. In June 2014, the Air Force contracted Lockheed Martin for full production of GEO-5 and GEO-6.

The SBIRS team is led by the Remote Systems Directorate at the U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center. Lockheed Martin is the SBIRS prime contractor, while Northrop Grumman is the payload provider. Air Force Space Command operates the SBIRS system.

Northrop Grumman Conducts Successful Demonstration of its AQS-24A Mine Detecting Sensor System for US Naval Forces Central Command

 

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Oct. 6, 2014 – Northrop Grumman

 

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC), in support of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command in Manama, Bahrain, announced the successful demonstration of an unmanned mine-hunting mission. In the demonstration, the Mine Hunting Unmanned Surface Vehicle (MHU) was used in tandem with Northrop Grumman's AQS-24A Mine Detecting Sensor System in the Arabian Gulf.

The demonstration highlighted the unmanned capabilities of the MHU in deploying, towing and recovering the AQS-24A.

The MHU with the AQS-24A was rapidly fielded by the U.S. Navy's Unmanned Maritime Systems Program Office (PMS406), NAVSEA, Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC), Division Newport and Northrop Grumman to prove the utility of mine hunting from an 11-meter unmanned surface platform.

The MHU was remotely controlled and executed a preplanned mission by transiting to an operational area, deploying the AQS-24A, executing a search pattern and recovering the sensor. Real-time situational awareness data and sensor sonar data were sent via tactical data link to the command and control (C2) station to ensure safe operation while maintaining mission objectives.       

"We are encouraged by the progress made with MHU 1 and 2 in 5th Fleet," said Capt. David Honabach, PMS 406 Unmanned Maritime Systems program manager, U.S. Navy. "We are also pleased that we could successfully demonstrate this capability to a key coalition partner in the Arabian Gulf region and look forward to Flight 2 Mine Hunting Unmanned Surface Vehicles [USV] for future success."

"This Navy demonstration, along with the continued investments we are making across the USV and mine-hunting technology spectrum, demonstrate that Northrop Grumman is committed to assisting the Navy and our coalition partners in defeating the maritime mine threat while keeping sailors out of the minefield," said Tom Jones, vice president, Undersea Systems, Northrop Grumman.

The deployment of this technology expands the operational envelope of the AQS-24A to be expanded for day and night operations at lower operational costs. This reduces the time to clear ports, harbors, channels and sea lines of communications of threatening mines and other maritime navigation hazards. The success of the remotely operated MHU also removes the warfighter from being directly exposed to the dangers of mined areas.

The U.S. Navy and Northrop Grumman had demonstrated mine-hunting capabilities in the Gulf using a Navy unmanned vessel and a company sensor system.

 

Northrop Grumman has successfully demonstrated its mine detecting sensor system for the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command in Manama, Bahrain.

 

The demonstration was performed with the Mine Hunting Unmanned Surface Vehicle, or MHU, in the Arabian Sea and highlighted the capabilities of the vessel with the sensor system.

Northrop Grumman Debuts Three Low-Cost Terminals to Protect Nation's Warfighters, Advance Military Satellite Communications

 

REDONDO BEACH, Calif. -- Oct. 6, 2014 – Northrop Grumman

 

Delivering on its commitment to protect the nation's warfighters with secure, affordable satellite communications in an increasing threat environment, Northrop Grumman (NYSE:NOC) will feature three variants of protected low-cost terminals (LCTs) at MILCOM 2014.

 

The annual conference is being held Oct. 6-8 at the Baltimore Convention Center and attracts military and government experts to discuss the latest advances in protected communications. The company's exhibit – No. 403 – will feature three extremely high frequency LCTs that deliver rapid, jam-resistant connectivity for tactical missions at the same cost as unprotected military communication terminals:

 

-- Protected communications on the move (P-COTM) are rugged terminals with low-profile vehicle antennas that address unmet, near-term requirements to expand Army communication networks. The terminals are critical beyond-line-of-sight nodes that provide protected connectivity through Milstar and Advanced Extremely High Frequency satellites.

 

--Airborne terminals are an extension of the hardware and software of P-COTM designed for special operations aircraft. The terminals are readily extendable into other manned and unmanned applications and are scheduled to be demonstrated in 2015.

 

--TCS Protected ULTRA terminals are packaged in airline-checkable transit cases that can be set up within 10 minutes to support modular quick-change feeds and upgrade kits. The terminals are significantly smaller and lighter than current protected communication alternatives.

 

The LCT variants are a result of a joint investment by Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin and TeleCommunication Systems to provide secure, assured command and control to the tactical warfighter. The technology advancement can be produced at a cost significantly below currently fielded protected communication terminals, and will be available for fielding within the next two years.

 

The company also will participate in a panel, "Supporting the Warfighter with Assured Military SATCOM," Monday, Oct. 6 at 2:30 p.m.in Room 314. The Northrop Grumman panelist will be Tim Frei, vice president, communication systems.

Northrop Grumman to upgrade US Navy’s explosive ordnance disposal robots

Remotec, a Northrop Grumman subsidiary, has been awarded a contract by the US Navy to repair and upgrade 103 Mk3 series remote ordnance neutralisation systems (RONS), which will boost the potential and availability of explosive ordnance disposal robots.

 

Awarded by the Naval Surface Warfare Centre, Indian Head Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Division, Indian Head, Maryland, the value of the IDIQ contract could reach $12m if all options are exercised.

 

The RONS IDIQ contract includes the provision of depot-level repair support, modernisation of the Mk3 Mod 0 and Mod 1 version systems, as well as the implementation of government-approved configuration management conversions and engineering improvements.

 

The contract also offers the US Navy an option to buy a new RONS robot under a separate agreement if upgrades or overhauls are not cost-effective.

 

Northrop Grumman Remotec director James Heverin said: "Remotec is pleased to build upon the relationship we have had with the navy since 1988 and [is] proud to continue providing unmanned ground vehicle capabilities that keep our military bomb techs safe.

 

 

"The RCT and RONS story is an excellent example of how the partnership between government and industry can leverage the government investment in systems while providing new capabilities to users."

 

The RONS robotic system offers army and Marine Corps explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) teams with safe and secure site access. It also executes missions, including reconnaissance, diagnosis, render-safe procedures and the disposal of ordnance and improvised explosive devices.

 

Capable of being controlled through a fibre-optic cable or radio, the system integrates a chassis with articulators and wheels for improved mobility, a powerful manipulator, five cameras and an operator control unit.

 

Heverin added: "As we plan for the next-generation of military EOD robots, we can continue to provide RONS with new capabilities to meet evolving threats well into the future.

 

"Without a doubt, everyone's aim is ensuring our bomb techs have the best equipment possible to keep danger at a distance."

 

The navy's Indian Head facility is responsible for the development and procurement of EOD equipment to meet joint service needs.

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has been awarded an indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract valued at up to $300 million to continue helping U.S. Air Force Weather (AFW) deliver a full range of terrestrial and space environmental information, products and services to military users worldwide.

 

The Air Force, Army, special operations forces and others rely on AFW environmental information and forecasts for mission planning, combat operations by military units in the field, and airfield and flight operations.

 

Under the Systems Engineering, Management and Sustainment (SEMS) III contract, Northrop Grumman will continue to facilitate enterprise-level systems engineering, systems management and sustainment services. In addition, the company will support scientific projects, the transition of new capability to operations, logistics analysis and management, and testing and fielding support. The company has been the prime contractor for SEMS since 2002.

 

Northrop Grumman's SEMS work includes supporting AFW's continuing enhancement of existing systems, development of enterprise-level distribution methods that use network-centric services, expanding on-demand capabilities and fully integrating environmental domain data from land, sea, atmosphere and space sensors.

The SEMS III contract was awarded by the 55th Contracting Squadron, based at Offutt Air Force Base. Work will be performed primarily at the Air Force Weather Agency, also headquartered at Offutt. AFWA runs the strategic center for weather for the Air Force and supplies all weather-related information to the Air Force, Army, other Defense Department activities, the intelligence community and many civilian agencies.

 

Northrop Grumman was first awarded SEMS in 2002, initially tasked with consolidating the Air Force's weather systems to reduce the costs of maintaining individual weather systems. Under related contracts, the company has supported the Air Force's weather mission for more than 25 years.

Northrop Grumman has been awarded a contract to continue the operation and support of the US Air Force's (USAF) battlefield airborne communications node (BACN) system.

 

Under the $89.7m contract's terms, the company will extend operational support of the BACN payloads in support of overseas contingency missions until June 2015.

 

Equipped with an airborne executive processor (AEP), BACN is a forward-deployed network-centric enterprise information server, developed to enable data sharing between different battlefield communications systems using a suite of computers and radio systems.

 

The high-altitude BACN payloads are integrated onto four E-11A Bombardier Global Express BD-700 aircraft and three EQ-4B Block 20 Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicles deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

 

Northrop Grumman Information Systems communications division vice-president and general manager Jeannie Hilger said: "BACN is making such a tremendous difference for our warfighters that it is regarded as indispensable for mission success.

 

"The amount of positive feedback BACN receives from our warfighters is a testament to the critical support BACN currently provides and an inspiration to continuously enhance the system's capabilities."

 

The BACN also provides an advanced airborne communications capability to commanders and troops, as well as enhancing situational awareness and extending voice communications.

 

Northrop expects BACN to serves as a persistent high-altitude gateway in the joint aerial layer network (JALN) to offer secure communications to disadvantaged soldiers and network connectivity across the theatre.

 

The JALN would be designed to expand on existing communications networks and capabilities and links ground, space and airborne military assets.

 

Northrop serves as prime contractor for the EQ-4B Global Hawk UAV and the development, fielding and maintenance of the BACN system, and received the first BACN contract from the US Air Force Electronic Systems Center in April 2005.

US Air Force, Northrop Grumman Celebrate 25th Anniversary of B-2 Stealth Bomber's First Flight

For several goose bump-filled minutes today at U.S. Air Force Plant 42, it was July 17, 1989, all over again.

 

Just as they had on that historic day 25 years ago, several thousand Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) employees, civic leaders and Air Force personnel stood along the company's southern fence line in Palmdale to watch a B-2 stealth bomber taxi onto Runway 25.

As the tailless, bat-wing-shaped jet made its final turn and paused, its four General Electric engines began to roar. Slowly at first, then faster and faster, the B-2 thundered down the runway. As it lifted off and rose gracefully into the western morning sky, so too did the cheers of the adoring crowd, many of whom had started their careers on the B-2 program during its 30-plus-year history.

Northrop Grumman is the prime contractor for the Air Force's B-2 bomber, a key component of the nation's long range strike arsenal, and one of the most survivable aircraft in the world.

"For the past 25 years, the B-2 has been, and today continues to be, one of the most decisive and effective weapons systems for influencing our adversaries and defending America's interests around the globe," said Brig. Northrop Grumman conducted its 25th anniversary ceremony today on the tarmac near the facilities where every B-2 bomber was built and where every B-2 comes for a periodic wingtip-to-wingtip overhaul known as programmed depot maintenance.

Set against the backdrop of an operational B-2, the program included remarks by former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda; Bruce Hinds, former Northrop Grumman chief B-2 test pilot, who commanded first flight; Air Force Brig. Gen. Steven L. Basham, who co-piloted the first B-2 combat mission, and Duke Dufresne, a former B-2 program manager for Northrop Grumman and currently sector vice president, Operations for its Aerospace Systems sector.

"The B-2's maiden flight from Palmdale to Edwards Air Force Base lasted just over two hours, but it changed forever the tenor of long range strike and international diplomacy," said Tom Vice, corporate vice president and president, Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems. "Today, the bomber personifies Northrop Grumman's innovation and imagination, and provides an enduring symbol of the company's commitment to the brave men and women who defend our nation."

Following takeoff, the B-2 pilots thrilled the audience by circling back over the Plant 42 at low altitude and performing a ceremonial "wing wave" for the crowd.

The B-2 can carry both conventional and nuclear weapons. It is the only aircraft that combines stealth, long range, large payload and precision weapons delivery in a single platform. The B-2's unique capabilities allow it to penetrate an enemy's most sophisticated defenses and put at risk its most heavily defended targets.

Washington DC - The US Air Force has launched the competitive phase of the classified long range strike bomber by issuing a request for proposals, with Northrop Grumman and a Boeing/Lockheed Martin team poised to compete for a contract to develop and build 80-100 aircraft over the next two decades.

Details of the air force’s requirements for the new bomber are classified, and service officials are unlikely to provide more updates until a scheduled contract award in the second quarter of 2015.

“It will be an adaptable and highly capable system based upon mature technology,” says secretary of the air force Deborah Lee James.

Air force officials also have said the new bomber, also called the LRS-B, will enter service as a manned aircraft with a target unit price of $550 million. As the first new US bomber launched since the Northrop Grumman B-2A, the LRS-B is expected to replace a fleet of 76 Boeing B-52H and possibly a portion of the supersonic Rockwell B-1B fleets. A fleet of 20 B-2As will remain in service and complement the LRS-B.

Northrop Grumman has received a $3.6bn contract from the US Navy to deliver 25 new E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft, specifically designed as a carrier-based airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) system.

 

The latest fixed-price, incentive-fee multi-year agreement brings the total number of aircraft on contract with Northrop to 50.

 

Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems E-2 / C-2 programmes vice-president Bart LaGrone said: "It's a win-win. Our warfighters will get the advanced AEW&C technology that the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye brings, at a lower cost for taxpayers."

 

Designed to operate in the littoral and over land to provide unprecedented, 360-degree surveillance, the platform features open architecture compliant and commercial off-the-shelf (COTS)-based hardware and software.

 

The aircraft can be used by the US Navy to conduct airborne strikes, land force support and rescue operations. It will also allow the navy to manage a reliable communications network between widely dispersed nodes and support drug interdiction operations.

 

 

Featuring command and control capabilities, the aircraft provides expanded battlespace awareness for soldiers, especially in information operations and battle management, theatre air and missile defence, and multiple sensor fusion capabilities.

 

The aircraft is fitted with the AN/APY-9 radar system, featuring both mechanical and electronic scanning capabilities, fully integrated glass tactical cockpit, advanced identification friend or foe system, electronic support measures enhancements and a modernised communications and data link suite.

 

E-2 / C-2 Airborne Tactical Data System Programme Office (PMA-231) programme manager navy captain John Lemmon said: "The E-2D Advanced Hawkeye is the navy's primary airborne early warning and battle management command and control platform.

 

"I'm confident that as the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye attains initial operational capability later this year, the E-2D will continue to be ready, relevant and capable for decades to come and continue serving the navy carrier strike group with distinction."

 

To date, the company has delivered 13 production aircraft, as part of the navy's E-2D Advanced Hawkeye programme.

Warfighters will now have the latest in radar technology to pair with their current electro-optical infrared payload. Integrating this new radar system will provide the MQ-8B Fire Scout with essential operational capabilities in all tactical environments and will improve how it addresses threats in real-world scenarios.

Le démonstrateur de drone X-47B a réalisé son premier vol de nuit le 10 avril dernier, depuis la base aéronavale de Patuxent River. L’US Navy précise que les vols de nuit font partie des prochaines étapes pour développer le concept d’opération du drone.

 

L’X-47B, développé par Northrop Grumman, est un démonstrateur de drone de combat destiné aux études de R&D et R&T, afin d’étendre le champ des possibilités pour intégrer des aéronefs non-pilotés à bord de plateformes aéronavales. Le programme UCLASS (Unmanned carrier-launched airborne surveillance and strike system) de l’US Navy prévoit notamment de nouvelles capacités de frappe et ISR.

 

L’X-47B a effectué son vol inaugural en février 2011, son premier catapultage depuis un porte-avions de l’US Navy en mai 2013, puis un premier appontage en juillet de la même année.

Fourth AEHF Protected Communications Satellite Begins Integration Months Ahead of Schedule


SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 8, 2014 – Lockheed Martin

 

The fourth Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) satellite produced by Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] is taking shape after early deliveries of its payload and propulsion core. AEHF-4, expected to launch in 2017, will enable the constellation to reach full operational capability.

The propulsion core manufactured by Lockheed Martin and payload produced by Northrop Grumman arrived at the AEHF integration facility in Sunnyvale, Calif., earlier in the year. Both were delivered significantly ahead of baseline schedule. The propulsion core arrived eight months early, and the payload arrived two months early.

“We’re driving a shorter timeline for bigger cost savings. In fact, we are putting plans in place to finish six months ahead of our baseline schedule,” said Mark Calassa, vice president of Protected Communication Systems at Lockheed Martin. “AEHF’s propulsion system reflects Lockheed Martin’s investment in more efficient spacecraft. To complement its traditional chemical propulsion, AEHF uses the highest power electric propulsion system ever flown for orbit raising and station keeping.”

Lockheed Martin is under contract to deliver six AEHF satellites and the mission control segment. Users are testing AEHF-1, AEHF-2 and AEHF-3 on orbit, and the fourth satellite will enable the system to reach full operational capability. The fifth and sixth satellites will add to the capacity of the operational system and are being assembled at Lockheed Martin.

AEHF is the most secure communications satellite system used by the U.S. government. Its jam-resistant communications are resilient against enemy forces, including nuclear attack, and a single AEHF satellite provides greater capacity than its compatible legacy five-satellite Milstar system. AEHF’s five-fold increase in data rates speed up protected communications, such as real-time video, battlefield maps and targeting data. The constellation serves troops and national leaders, including the president and Pentagon officials.

LONDON — Britain’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) is dispatching a team to train on Northrop Grumman’s MQ-4C Triton UAV in the run-up to a possible decision next year on whether to re-establish a maritime patrol capability.

 

Responding to a parliamentary question April 3, the government said that four personnel are “scheduled to train on the MQ-4C Triton during June and August, 2014.”

 

The Triton is a maritime version of the Global Hawk remotely piloted surveillance vehicle. The high-altitude, long-endurance aircraft is in its flight-test phase ahead of deliveries to the US Navy.

 

The British government said the team will be trained at the US Navy’s Patuxent River Naval Air Station in Maryland.

 

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond has said on a number of occasions that unmanned aircraft could meet at least part of the requirement for a future maritime patrol aircraft capability if the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) resurrects the requirements.

 

The government controversially axed Britain’s maritime patrol aircraft capability as part of a budget-cutting exercise in the 2010 SDSR when BAE Systems’ long-delayed and over-budget Nimrod MRA4 program was canceled before the aircraft entered service.

 

Two demonstration versions of the Triton are scheduled to be delivered to Patuxent River in the next few weeks, having last month completed initial flight testing.

 

Triton has already been ordered by the US Navy to operate alongside Boeing P-8 Poseidon MPAs. Australia has also said it intends to buy the machine to work with the P-8s it has on order.

 

Northrop displayed a mock-up of the high-altitude Triton at a Royal Air Force show at its Waddington, England, base last year.

 

The British parliamentary answer also revealed that 20 personnel have been embedded with US Navy P-8 operations as part of a program to retain crew skills until a decision is made on whether to recreate a maritime patrol capability.

 

The program, known as Seedcorn, has also seen smaller numbers of personnel embedded with Australian, Canadian and New Zealand maritime patrol forces.

 

An MoD spokeswoman declined to elaborate on why the British personnel were being trained on Triton, but said it is part of a wider effort to develop capabilities.

 

“The Seedcorn program provides a valuable opportunity to UK personnel for training, specialization and exposure within the maritime environment while working with our allies to develop our capabilities. Triton forms only one element of this program and only a small, select number of UK personnel are involved in work, which operates from Patuxent River,” the spokeswoman said.

Demonstration at Beale Air Force Base proves system can send data independent of command and control

 

The U.S. Air Force RQ-4 Global Hawk unmanned aircraft system (UAS) has completed a series of ground and air demonstrations at Beale Air Force Base, Calif., expanding the adaptability of the Global Hawk system to use an additional Satellite Communications (SATCOM) link to improve the transfer of mission data.

 

At the request of the U.S. Air Force Air Combat Command, Northrop Grumman worked with Air Force partners to demonstrate that Global Hawk is compatible with different SATCOM architectures with no changes to the aircraft's hardware, software or payload. Taking place from Jan. 13-15, the demonstration highlighted a unique split link capability for Global Hawk that allows it to send mission data through a satellite link that is independent of the link used for command and control.

 

"This powerful demonstration illustrates Global Hawk's unique versatility," said Alfredo Ramirez, director and chief architect of Northrop Grumman's HALE Enterprise. "We're ecstatic with Global Hawk's ability to provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance products to operational end-users via multiple paths."

 

The combat-proven Global Hawk has logged more than 110,000 flight hours and carries a variety of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance sensor payloads to allow military commanders to gather near real-time images and uses radar to detect moving or stationary targets on the ground or at sea. The system supports antiterrorism, antipiracy, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, airborne communications and information sharing missions.

Northrop Grumman Flies First Production Smart Node Pod

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has completed a series of flight tests demonstrating the first production Smart Node Pod for the U.S. Air Force.

 

Smart Node Pod is an aircraft-mounted airborne communications system that allows real-time information to be exchanged among many disparate military and commercial radios and different datalinks, extends the network to the forward edge of the battlefield and relays full-motion video.

 

Northrop Grumman conducted five flights to certify performance characteristics in February in Virginia Beach, Va. During the flights, the Smart Node Pod demonstrated the ability to transmit full-motion video, imagery, voice and digital messages between warfighters both in the air and on the ground via various waveforms and datalinks and its interoperability with the proprietary and open source forward tactical handheld devices.

 

The company is under contract to produce Smart Node Pod systems for the Air Force, with deliveries scheduled through mid-summer of this year. Two different pod designs – a single-pod and a multipod architecture – are in production.

 

"This proven, reliable technology gives an extremely capable but lightweight communications, situational awareness, and command and control capability that can be readily mounted on many different military aircraft and controlled by the deployed commander," said Jeannie Hilger, vice president, Network Communication Systems, Northrop Grumman Information Systems.

 

Hilger said the pod can connect to the high-altitude Battlefield Airborne Communications Node (BACN) platforms, ground operational centers or other pods for beyond-line-of sight connectivity and provides access to high level intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance data and command and control information. "In this manner, Smart Node Pod has the capability to augment BACN in its anchor role as the persistent high altitude gateway of the Joint Aerial Layer Network (JALN) by providing connectivity at the lower tier. Working in unison, Smart Node Pod and BACN have the potential to expand warfighter benefits by building out a multitiered JALN architecture and providing network connectivity across the battlespace."

 

Smart Node Pod is based on BACN technology Northrop Grumman developed for the Air Force.

L’US Navy commande cinq Fire Scout supplémentaires

L’US Navy va acquérir cinq drones VTOL MQ-8C Fire Scout supplémentaires, en vertu d’un contrat signé avec l’industriel Northrop Grumman le 2 avril. Le contrat de 43,8 millions de dollars comprend également la livraison d’une station de contrôle au sol. Les drones devraient être livrés d’ici décembre 2015.

 

Le drone hélicoptère de Northrop Grumman est développé à partir de la cellule d’un Bell 407. Version améliorée du MQ-8B, il a effectué son vol inaugural le 31 octobre 2013 et devrait être opérationnel au sein de l’US Navy dans le courant de l’année. Il sera surtout utilisé pour les missions ISR.

Northrop Grumman et l’US Navy ont achevé la première phase d’essais du drone HALE MQ-4C Triton le 13 mars dernier. Celle-ci était notamment centrée sur l’ouverture de l’enveloppe de vol. Au total, le drone a effectué 13 vols, afin de valider près de 570 points d’essais.

 

Northrop Grumman précise que le Triton a par ailleurs atteint l’altitude 59 950 pieds.

 

Le second exemplaire du MQ-4C devrait effectuer son vol inaugural prochainement. En attendant, les deux appareils vont être transférés de Palmdale à la base aéronavale de Patuxent River, en Californie, avec quelques mois de retard.

 

L’US Navy prévoit d’obtenir 68 exemplaires du drone HALE, en complément des P-8A Poseidon déployés pour les missions ISR, de patrouille et de surveillance maritime. Le premier MQ-4C avait effectué son tout premier vol en mai 2013.
