Kazakhstan to get more radar systems from ThalesRaytheonSystems


ASTANA, Kazakhstan, May 23 (UPI)

 

Fully digital 3D air defense radars are to be developed and delivered to the air force of Kazakhstan under an agreement with ThalesRaytheonSystems.

The company reported it signed the memorandum of understanding for its Ground Master 400 long-range air defense radars earlier this week at the KADEX defense exhibition in Astana, the capital of the former Soviet republic.

The company's joint venture with SKTB Granit -- Granit Thales Electronics – will conduct the work.

"We are delighted to be able to exploit the operational advantages of this radar system, which will give Kazakhstan a long-range air surveillance capability and increase protection of our key assets," said Kazakh Deputy Minister of Defense Okas Bazargaliyevich Saparov.

"This memorandum of understanding between Granit, Thales and ThalesRaytheonSystems to supply GM400 radars illustrates the collaboration underway for several years now between us in Kazakhstan," said Philippe Duhamel, chief executive officer of ThalesRaytheonSystems. "The GM400s will boost Kazakhstan's air defense capabilities, giving the Kazakh Air Force the ability to detect a broad array of threats from low to high altitude and thus assure extended air surveillance over its territory."

An initial GM400 radar was previously ordered by Kazakhstan and delivered recently. It can be operated in the field or in a fixed position under a radome.

ThalesRaytheonSystems said integration of the next radars will take place at the Granit Thales Electronics facility outside Almaty, Kazakhstan, as part of a technology transfer accord.

Mali : Désengagement du radar GIRAFFE

Le 3 avril 2014, le système radar GIRAFFE a été désengagé du Mali après avoir servi pendant huit mois la force Serval.

 

Ce système de détection et de contrôle tactique (SDCT) a assuré la sécurité du volume d’approche et la régulation du trafic aérien de l’aéroport de Gao entre les mois d’août 2013 et de mars 2014, contrôlant près de 4000 mouvements. Il a également permis d’assurer, en toutes circonstances, dans son volume de détection, la sécurité des aéronefs de l’ONU et des organisations humanitaires vis-à-vis du trafic militaire engagé dans les opérations aériennes.

 

Interconnecté par liaisons de données tactiques aux centres de conduites des opérations aériennes métropolitains et de théâtre, ainsi qu’au centre de management de la défense dans la 3edimension (CMD3D) co-localisé, il a également contribué à l’accomplissement d’une centaine de missions aériennes de reconnaissance et d’appui aux opérations terrestres et à la remontée des informations de situation aérienne en temps réel vers les centres de décision.

 

Mali : Désengagement du radar GIRAFFE

Opéré par un personnel aguerri, le radar GIRAFFE a entre autre démontré son aptitude réactive à la projection par aérotransport et sa capacité à mettre à disposition de la conduite des opérations aériennes militaires et de gestion des crises des capacités de détection, de surveillance, de conduite, de coordination et de contrôle tactique remarquables.

 

Environ 1600 militaires français sont actuellement présents sur le sol malien et poursuivent une mission de lutte contre les groupes armés terroristes, tout en appuyant la montée en puissance des forces de la MINUSMA et des FAMA. Simultanément, la force Serval conduit son allègement, en coordination avec les FAMA et la MINUSMA, et devrait atteindre les 1000 hommes à la fin du printemps 2014.

Des radars israéliens pour surveiller les méchants petits drones nord-coréens

L’armée sud-coréenne va acheter 10 radars de «surveillance aérienne tactique» de la société israélienne Rada Electronic Industries pour pouvoir enfin surveiller et détecter efficacement des appareils volant à faible altitude et de petits les drones comme que lui ont envoyé les Nord-Coréens, rapporte l’agence sud-coréenne Yonhap.

 

Tout récemment, la Corée du Sud a récupéré deux drones qu’elle croit d’origine nord-coréenne sur son territoire. Les petits drones bleus aux sombres desseins, bien que plutôt rudimentaires, inquiètent tout de même les responsables sud-coréens, tant civils que militaires, et le ministre de la Défense Kim Kwan-jin sud-coréen a déclaré que des mesures seront prises pour renforcer la capacité de défense aérienne du pays

«L’armée sud-coréenne a décidé d’affecter 20 milliards de wons (19 millions $) du budget d’urgence pour acheter 10 radars israéliens RPS-42 pour la surveillance des appareils volant à faible altitude afin de lutter contre les drones nord-coréens et d’autres équipements de surveillance», a déclaré ce mercredi la source.

Il faut un appareil ayant une capacité d’au moins 10 kilomètres pour pouvoir détecter les drones nord-coréens. Les radars de surveillance utilisés par l’armée à l’heure actuelle, TPS-830K, n’étant pas suffisants pour détecter ou surveiller les petits drones nord-coréens, l’armée du Sud projette maintenant d’acheter des radars à Israël pour les déployer dans les principales installations du pays, dont le bureau présidentiel, rapporte l’agence sud-coréenne.

«Le système de radar tactique de surveillance aérienne RPS-42 est optimisé pour détecter, classifier et suivre tous les types d’objets aériens à une altitude de 30 pieds à 30.000 pieds (de 9 à 9.000 mètres) dans un rayon allant jusqu’à 30 km.», dit Rada Electronic Industries, la société israélienne qui fabrique ce système. Parmi les objets que peut détecter le système de radar figurent des combattants, des hélicoptères, des avions et…des drones.

«Nous avons décidé d’acheter ces radars en consacrant un autre budget pour ce plan d’achat», a fait savoir un responsable du ministère de la Défense, déclarant «Nous projetons de signer un contrat d’achat de radars israéliens après un test de qualité et un examen des autres capacités avant la fin de cette année pour les déployer l’année prochaine».

Une commande importante pour la société de Netanya qui a reçu, en 2013 des nouvelles commandes pour une valeurs de 26 millions $. Merci qui! Merci Kim!, pourrait-on ajouter.

Spexer 2000 security radar improves border protection

 

 

Airbus Defence and Space has been awarded a contract for the delivery of four of its Spexer 2000 security radars to further improve the surveillance of the borders of a major Middle Eastern country. The contract is an extension to an existing contract for the delivery of more than 40 Spexer 2000 radars, which have been operating successfully for almost two years now.

 

Thomas Müller, head of the Business Line Electronics at Airbus Defence and Space, said: “Spexer 2000 is using state-of-the-art Active Electronically Scanning Array (AESA) technology, which provides a multi-tasking and multi-mode capability, and increases the detection and target assessment capability substantially. Due to this, Spexer 2000 can replace several conventional radars.”

 

Spexer 2000 is optimized for the surveillance of borders and other applications which require the monitoring of vast areas over long distances of 40 km. With high Doppler and velocity resolution as well as high clutter suppression, Spexer 2000 is able to reliably detect, track and classify even very small and slowly moving targets such as pedestrians, and also fast objects such as speed boats or low-flying objects such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. In addition, a camera mounted on top of the radar can be cued to the radar in order to identify suspicious objects.

 

This technology ensures a high level of situational awareness providing border guards and security forces with additional reaction time towards illicit intrusions. The radar is qualified according to several military standards and provides a very high availability and MTBCF (mean time between critical failure), combined with a low false alarm rate and reliable performance even in severe environmental conditions.

 

Spexer 2000 is part of Airbus Defence and Space’s Spexer security radar family which consists of several radars, each optimized for specific surveillance applications including border, infrastructure, perimeter and coastal surveillance. A specific military version has been developed for the German Army.

Russie: un nouveau système de DCA testé près de Saint-Pétersbourg

Les tests d'un nouveau système russe de surveillance de l'espace aérien ont eu lieu dans l'aéroport de Poulkovo, près de Saint-Pétersbourg, a annoncé lundi lors d'une conférence de presse un représentant du groupe Almaz-Antey, principal constructeur russe des systèmes de défense antiaérienne.

 

"Le consortium Almaz-Anteï a mené à bien avec succès tous les tests d'Etat du système de surveillance de l'espace aérien multipostion à spectre étendu +Mera+", a indiqué la source.

 

D'après le concepteur, le système en question peut servir de source d'informations précises sur la situation aérienne dans les zones inaccessibles pour les radars. Ce système permettra de renoncer aux radars ARSR et d'améliorer la couverture radar. En outre, Mera est plus attirant de point de vue du coût. 

 

"Le système de surveillance de l'espace aérien Mera fournit non seulement des informations exhaustives et précises sur les appareils aériens, mais garantit un travail sûr et sans failles", a conclu la source.

South Korea was reportedly considering purchasing advanced surveillance radar to spot small- sized, low-flying unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) dispatched from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). The South Korean news agency Yonhap, citing a military official, reported that the military was mulling acquiring the low-altitude surveillance radar from overseas as it failed to detect several unmanned aircrafts deployed by the DPRK recently.

 

The DPRK has flew several pilotless airplanes for the reconnaissance purpose to South Korea, which were spotted by the naked eye in frontline areas, but were depicted as birds on the radar screen due to their small size.

 

The South Korean Army was operating the low-altitude surveillance radars called TPS-830K, but it rarely detected the small, unmanned aircrafts believed to be flown by the DPRK.

 

An official at the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, the country's arms procurement agency, said over phone that he hasn't heard of whether the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) has decided to buy it, noting that the JCS should make a decision to purchase any military devices.

 

The South Korean military came to a tentative conclusion that two drones, discovered in inter-Korean border areas recently, came from the DPRK, according to government sources cited by Yonhap.

Worldwide first "Mode S"-based Cluster improves efficient use of Airspace

 

The Airbus Defence and Space business line Electronics has concluded the delivery of the worldwide first air traffic control network based on the latest “Eurocontrol” standard Mode S to the flight safety branch of the German Air Force. This Mode S based network guarantees the automatized guidance of civil and military aircraft in an area of 1,700 x 1,500 km. Thus, flight safety and the efficiency of airspace utilization can be increased considerably. After a five year fully operational observation period, the system has been handed over to the in-service support and the initial procurement project is concluded. Two more Mode S based clusters are already operational and in the observation phase.

"Air traffic control authorities all over the world are faced with continually increasing air traffic density," said Thomas Müller, Head of Airbus Defence and Space Electronics. "Together with military air traffic, this situation requires a high-performance guidance system ensuring safety, comprehensive data exchange and efficient allocation of airspace."

Under the project ”Ramos”, Airbus Defence and Space Electronics has equipped six long-range surveillance radars with so-called MSSR (MSSR = Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar) 2000 I secondary radar systems. These secondary radars provide an overview of the air situation based on interrogations and automatic replies from individual aircraft. MSSR 2000 I is the only secondary radar certified according to the latest air traffic control standards, both civil and military.

The MSSR 2000 I systems establish a Mode S Cluster which is safely guiding all aircraft in the area. Within this area, each individual aircraft which is equipped with a Mode S transponder can be identified and tracked automatically without the necessity of individual radar target acquisition, enabled by autonomous target data handover from one radar station to the other. This avoids the risk of single tracks getting lost while handing over from one air traffic control cell to another. Furthermore, the cluster allocates air traffic control tasks automatically, i.e. if one secondary radar fails, others within the cluster take over immediately.

In the military field, MSSR 2000 I is used for automatic friend-or-foe identification (IFF), thus avoiding the erroneous engagement of friendly forces. It is capable of the new Mode 5 military standard which is to be introduced in all Nato countries. MSSR 2000 I is deployed on German naval vessels and used by the armed and naval forces of numerous states worldwide. For civil air traffic control purposes it is in service in such countries as Austria, Portugal, Bulgaria and the Philippines.

World's most powerful VHF radar to be overhauled in Russia

The Daryal early warning radar, based near the town of Pechora in the Komi Republic, will undergo in-depth modernization without being taken off duty before 2016, Aerospace Defense Forces spokesman Col. Alexei Zolotukhin said.

 

"Given the Daryal early warning radar's large modernization potential, all of its key systems will be upgraded without taking the radr off duty, which will make it more reliable in operation, enhance its tactical and technical characteristics, and lower energy demand," he said.

 

"The radar's zone of coverage extends to a larger part of northern Russia, the United States and Canada. It defends Russia from possible missile attacks, overcoming various types of active and passive jamming, ionospheric disturbances, geophysical anomalies and polar glow. It is the world's most powerful VHF-band radar," Zolotukhin said.

 

World's most powerful VHF radar to be overhauled in Russia

The radar was developed by the Academician Mints Radio-Engineering Institute and entered service on March 20 1984.

 

Since it went online 30 years ago it has been controlling the northern missile-threat sector, detecting about 700 ballistic missile and space rocket launches. It is capable of detecting small-size targets at super-long distances, including geostationary orbits.

Les Troupes de défense aérospatiale russes ont procédé à la création de quatre nouveaux radars d'alerte précoce, a annoncé vendredi à Moscou le commandant des troupes, Alexandre Golovko.

 

"Deux nouveaux radars sont entrés en service près d'Armavir et de Saint-Pétersbourg. Les radars de Kaliningrad et d'Irkoutsk se préparent à des essais d'homologation. Nous avons également procédé à la création de quatre autres radars", a indiqué le général Golovko lors d'une rencontre du président russe Vladimir Poutine avec des officiers de haut rang des Troupes de défense aérospatiale.

 

Selon le général, le lancement de ces radars permettra de couvrir l'ensemble du territoire russe.

 

Le général Golovko a annoncé en septembre 2013 que des radars d'alerte précoce de type Voronej en chantier à Kaliningrad et à Irkoutsk seraient mis en service opérationnel en 2014.

 

Les radars de type Voronej, qui utilisent entre autres les ondes décimétriques, surpassent largement leurs prédécesseurs, les stations "Dniepr" et "Darial" créées à l'époque soviétique. Ils ont une portée de 6.000 kilomètres et peuvent détecter une attaque contre les postes de commandement et les sites civils importants. Le ministère russe de la Défense envisage de remplacer d'ici 2020 tous les radars datant de l'époque soviétique par ces nouvelles stations.

Israel Aerospace Industries reports it is supplying dual-use civilian and military airspace control and protection radars to an unidentified customer.

 

The radars to be provided are the ELM-2288 AD-STAR air defense and traffic control radar and the ELM-2106NG 3D tactical air defense radar, which are manufactured by IAI subsidiary ELTA Systems Ltd.

 

IAI said the radars were configured to the specific requirements of the customer and for the terrain in which they will operate.

 

"IAI's extensive product line of surveillance radars enables us to integrate optimal customer-specific solutions for defense and civil applications", said an IAI ELTA marketing executive. "We are pleased to report that we are constantly gaining new customers worldwide for our high performance AD-STAR and ELM-2106NG radars."

 

The AD-STAR ELM-2288MR is a 3D solid-state, long-range S-Band transportable radar for air defense, early warning and traffic control at ranges of more than 186 miles.

 

The EL/M 2106 NG is a fourth generation 3D system with a range of about 50 miles and can detect low flying aircraft.

 

IAI gave no details as to a delivery schedule for the systems or their monetary value.

U.S. gains additional protection against ballistic missiles

The U.S. will soon have another system to defend against ballistic missiles. Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) delivered its ninth AN/TPY-2 ballistic missile defense radar to the Missile Defense Agency, six months ahead of schedule.

 

AN/TPY-2 is an integral element of the Ballistic Missile Defense System.  It is a mobile X-band radar that helps protect civilians and infrastructure in the U.S., deployed warfighters, and allied nations and security partners, from the growing ballistic missile threat.  U.S. public intelligence estimates indicate there are more than 6,300 ballistic missiles not controlled by the U.S., NATO, China or Russia, with that number expected to reach almost 8,000 by 2020.

"Delivering this ninth radar is crucial because our nation's enemies continue to improve and proliferate their ballistic missile technology and tactics," said Raytheon's Dave Gulla, vice president of Integrated Defense Systems' Global Integrated Sensors business area. "The AN/TPY-2 consistently demonstrates its ability to pace the evolving threat, and test after test has proven it effectively defends against every category of ballistic missile."

The radar will be integrated into the U.S. Army's fourth Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missile defense battery, serving as the "eyes and ears" of the system by searching, detecting, tracking and discriminating threats, and guiding the intercepting missile. Raytheon serves as one of MDA's prime contractors for THAAD.

Raytheon is currently under contract to provide three additional AN/TPY-2 radars for the MDA, and is in the process of building two radars for a U.S. ally in the Arabian Gulf.

AN/TPY-2 is a high resolution, mobile, rapidly deployable X-band radar capable of providing long range acquisition, precision track, and discrimination of all classes of ballistic missiles. The AN/TPY-2 may be deployed globally in either terminal or forward-based mode.

The AN/TPY-2 radar has two modes. In forward-based mode, the AN/TPY-2 cues the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS), by detecting, discriminating and tracking enemy ballistic missiles in the ascent phase of flight. In terminal mode, it serves as the fire control radar for the THAAD system.

  • AN/TPY-2 has performed flawlessly in both terminal and forward-based mode in all major tests.
  • On Sept 10, 2013, two AN/TPY-2 radars – one terminal and one forward-based – achieved all test objectives in FTO-01, the U.S. military's first operational test of the Ballistic Missile Defense System.
  • The forward-based AN/TPY-2 extended the battlespace during FTM-15 by enabling a Standard Missile-3 to launch on remote and intercept a separating Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile.
  • Raytheon has delivered nine AN/TPY-2s to the Missile Defense Agency. Some of those radars are currently helping defend the U.S. and its allies in the European, Pacific and Central Command area of responsibilities.

(Kienthuc.net.vn) - Army radar (Air Defense - Air Force) is leading projects to improve and upgrade the radar station P-18 planes of foreign technology.

This information was revealed in an article titled "Quietly waves wing fly away" published recently in the newspaper People's Army.

"... In recent years, along with factory Z119 and the relevant agencies, industry is leading the project radar" investments improved radar station P-18 "with a 100% transfer of technology design and manufacturing creation, "the article said.

P-18 is the realm of mobile radar 2 parameters (NATO designation is Spoon Rest) developed by SKB Design Bureau precursor of Technical Research Institute of Radio NNIIRT Nizhniy Novgorod (Russia) today.

Radar is designed to replace the P-12, in use since 1970 and is widely exported to many countries around the world including Vietnam.

P-18 stations operating in the VHF band, 150-170MHz frequency. It has a range of up to 250km reconnaissance, maximum altitude of 35km, azimuth 360 degrees.

An interesting detail is that, P-18 is able to capture stealth aircraft relatively good. The radar wave absorbing coatings proved ineffective for VHF radar using longer wavelengths.

The radar system includes a car antenna is placed on the Ural-4320 chassis with a control center is also located on the Ural-4320 chassis.

S. Korean Firm Claims Development of Wideband Radar Absorbing Material

SEOUL — A South Korean company claims that it has developed a radar absorbing material (RAM) suited to absorption of almost all frequencies.

 

Cony International, based in Icheon, announced it has developed a RAM with reflectivity lower than -10dB at any frequency.

 

“The Cony RAM has greater radar absorbency at almost all frequencies,” said Choi Jae-chul, chairman of the company. “This material could be applied to many types of weapons systems, such as fighter jets and warships, for stealth capabilities. It will help improve their survivability and mission capability to a greater extent.”

 

Korea Maritime and Ocean University evaluated the Cony RAM for its radar cross-section efficiency last November. The absorption rate peaked at a level as high as 98 percent, according to the university.

 

The national university in Busan is one of the two organizations in South Korea to evaluate the RAM performances. The other is the Agency for Defense Department, affiliated with the Ministry of National Defense.

 

“RAM generally absorbs radar waves either at a certain frequency or a short range of frequencies,” said Professor Kim Dong-il of the Department of Radio Sciences and Engineering at the university. “But the Cony RAM has been tested to have excellent electromagnetic absorption performance over a wide band.”

 

The RAM could be used in developing a stealthy fighter jet, Kim said, referring to the country’s KF-X project aimed at developing an F-16 class aircraft with radar-evading stealth capabilities.

 

Established in 1986, Cony International has long developed microwave absorbing materials both for commercial and military purposes.

 

In the late 1980s, the company supplied the South Korean Navy with RAMs for warships to resolve electromagnetic interferences.

 

It also signed a contract with a Middle East nation in 1992 to provide RAMs for fighter aircraft.

Thales announces that it has signed a Letter of Award with Contraves Advanced Devices Sdn. Bhd. to supply six SMART-S Mk2 naval surveillance radar systems, as well as six CAPTAS-2 towed sonar systems for the Royal Malaysian Navy’s Second Generation Patrol Vessel (SGPV) Littoral Combat Ships (LCS).

The six SMART-S Mk2 radars will be installed on the Malaysian Littoral Combat Ships that are currently being built by Boustead Naval Shipyard Sdn Bhd in Malaysia. The first SMART-S Mk2 is expected to be delivered within the next few years. Thales in Hengelo (The Netherlands) will build and test the first two radars; the other four systems will be assembled and tested by Contraves in Malaysia, using Thales components and know-how.

The Royal Malaysian Navy has also selected the CAPTAS-2 which is part of the CAPTAS[1]  family of active Variable Depth Sonar (VDS). CAPTAS-2 is designed to perform against quiet submarines, enabling surface platforms to carry out all Anti-Submarine Warfare missions such as escort, prosecution, area sanitisation and own force protection.

The CAPTAS-2 Variable Depth Sonar comprises state-of-the-art innovative technologies that provides a high source level in a compact array. Furthermore, Thales’s unique towed triplet receive array
provides instant left/right ambiguity resolution, and is ideally suited for torpedo defence.

BAE orders Raytheon advanced combat radar for South Korean KF-16 modernisation

Raytheon has been awarded a contract to support the upgrade of the Republic of Korea Air Force's (ROKAF) KF-16C/D Block 52 Fighting Falcon fighter aircraft fleet.

 

Awarded by BAE Systems, the contract covers supply of an integrated solution comprising Raytheon advanced combat radar (RACR), ALR-69A all-digital radar warning receiver, and advanced mission computing technology and weapon systems integration for the 130 KF-16C/D Block 52 fleet.

 

Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems International Strategy and Business Development vice-president Jim Hvizd said the competitive selection of RACR by South Korea last year gave the company an important foothold in the international F-16 upgrade market.

 

"The addition of our EW and mission computing expertise and our weapon systems integration will provide the Republic of Korea with an operationally superior solution that will keep their KF-16s relevant for years to come," Hvizd said.

 

Apart from making South Korea the first international customer for F-16 RACR radar, the contract also adds the aircraft to an inventory of fighters retrofitted with Raytheon active electronically scanned array (AESA) radars, such as F-15C, F-15E, F/A-18E/F and the EA-18G Growler.

 

Already built and test-flown on the F-16, the RACR is a compact, lightweight and scalable radar designed to enable pilots to simultaneously detect, identify and track multiple air and surface targets in the battlefield.

 

The contract's value and additional details, including delivery schedule, remain undisclosed.

 

Powered by F100-PW-229 engines, the KF-16 is a Korean version of the combat proven F-16 fighter, and was built by Korean Aerospace Industries (KAI) under license from its manufacturer, Lockheed Martin, in the 1990s.

De nouveaux équipements, dont des complexes radars, seront remis au cours de l'année 2014 aux Troupes de défense aérospatiale russe (VKO), a annoncé mercredi aux journalistes un porte-parole du ministère de la Défense du pays.

 

"En 2014, des unités du Commandement de la défense antiaérienne et antimissile des forces aérospatiales recevront six complexes de radars Nebo-M ainsi que 23 stations radar "Podlet" et "Sopka"", a indiqué la source.

 

Et de préciser que des radars modernisés, dont "Desna" et "Kasta", seraient remis aux troupes aérospatiales russes au cours de cette année.

 

Le commandant des troupes, Alexandre Golovko, avait antérieurement annoncé qu'en 2014 un lot de missiles sol-air S-400 équiperait les forces de la défense aérospatiale.

Raytheon building 12th radar for ballistic missile defense

 

TEWKSBURY, Mass., Dec. 18 (UPI)

 

Raytheon announced Wednesday it has begun building the 12th AN/TPY-2 ballistic missile defense radar for the U.S. Missile Defense Agency.

 

The AN/TPY-2 is a mobile X-band radar that provides long-range acquisition, precision tracking and discrimination of short-, medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles.

 

It can be deployed in either terminal or forward-based mode.

 

"Beginning production of a 12th AN/TPY-2 ballistic missile defense radar is so important because this X-band sensor is the backbone of U.S. missile defense around the globe," said Dave Gulla, vice president of Global Integrated Sensors in Raytheon's Integrated Defense Systems business. "The U.S., our warfighters, allies and security partners can count on the AN/TPY-2 because it has performed flawlessly in every test to date against all categories of ballistic missiles."

 

Production of the 12th AN/TPY-2 comes under a $172.2 million contract from the U.S. Department of Defense awarded this month.

 

Raytheon has delivered eight of the radars to the U.S. military under an earlier contract.

La Russie reconstitue son réseau de radars militaires

Le nouveau radar Konteïner, construit près de la ville de Kovylkino, en Mordovie, vient d’être mis en état d’alerte.

 

Ce système permettra de détecter le déplacement de tous les appareils en vol à l’Ouest de son emplacement et d'enregistrer tout lancement de missiles de croisière à une distance de 3000 km.

 

La connaissance est un gage de la paix

 

Le contrôle du territoire par un radar militaire est la garantie d’une défense antimissile fiable. L’effondrement de l’URSS a provoqué des dysfonctionnements dans ce système. En 1991, de nombreux systèmes de défense antimissile et des radars de prévention se sont retrouvés sur le territoire des Etats étrangers. Quant aux sites militaires qui sont restés sous le contrôle russe, qu’ils soient à l’intérieur du pays ou à l’étranger, peu à peu, ils sont devenus obsolètes. En même temps, les anciens alliés de l’URSS parmi les pays de l’Europe de l’Est sont devenus des membres de l’OTAN. Tous ces facteurs représentent une menace potentielle à la sécurité de la Russie malgré le fait que la probabilité d’un conflit armé sur le front de l’Est est beaucoup moins importante par rapport à il y a 30 ans.

 

Le radar Konteïner qui a été mis en service en Mordovie, est le premier de la nouvelle série des radars horizontaux de nouvelle génération. Outre les stations Voronej qui font partie du système de radars de prévention, ce nouveau radar vise à reconstituer le système de défense des radars russes.

 

La physique et la géographie

 

Le rayon d’action des stations radar classiques est limité par l’horizon, si ces stations se trouvent à la surface de la Terre, car l’onde radio se déplace en ligne droite, n’étant pas capable de faire le tour de la Terre. Par conséquent, les objets qui volent à basse altitude peuvent échapper au radar. En outre, plus le radar est éloigné, plus la zone morte que le radar n’est pas en mesure de contrôler est importante.

 

L’élaboration des radars transhorizon (OTC) a commencé dans les années 1940. Au départ, ces systèmes fonctionnaient dans le diapason des grandes ondes (GO). Ces ondes sont capables de faire le tour de la Terre. Mais pour ce type de radars, il fallait des antennes énormes et des puissances importantes, (c’est d’ailleurs aussi le cas pour les radars en ondes courtes (OC)). Résultat, les concepteurs ont abandonné ce projet faute de rentabilité.

 

Ensuite, les ingénieurs ont misé sur les ondes courtes. Ces ondes se déplacent dans l’atmosphère à une distance qui dépend de la puissance de l'émetteur, se reflétant dans l’ionosphère. Ce principe a longtemps été utilisé dans la liaison radio, mais la détection des objets dans l’atmosphère par le biais des ondes courtes était considérée comme impossible pendant très longtemps.

 

La station 5H32 Douga a été le premier radar de cette catégorie, mis en place dans l’Union soviétique. Trois radars de cette catégorie ont été mis en place dans les années 1980 en Russie : dans l’Extrême-Orient près de Komsomolsk-sur-Amour et en Ukraine, près de Tchernobyl et Nikolaïev. Les radars semblaient être très efficaces, mais leur exploitation s’est arrêtée à cause de la catastrophe de Tchernobyl et l’effondrement de l’URSS.

 

Dans les années 1990 deux nouvelles stations, Teletset Volna, développées par l’Institut de recherche sur les liaisons radio (NIIDAR), ont été mises en service. Ensuite, au début des années 2000, deux autres stations radar sont entrées en service – Podsolnoukh et Lagouna. Ces radars construits sur les côtes étaient utilisés pour contrôler la situation à la surface de la Terre dans un rayon de 200 miles. Ces stations fonctionnent d’après le principe du « faisceau de surface », en utilisant la capacité des ondes courtes à s’étendre au-delà de l’horizon grâce à la diffraction le long de la surface de la mer. Dans le même temps, les travaux sur le futur radar du projet 29B6 Konteïner ont commencé.

 

Selon le rapport technique, la station est capable de détecter des cibles à une distance de plus de 3000 km et à une altitude de 100 km. La station est également capable de déterminer avec précision les coordonnées de l'objet détecté. Le projet Konteïner dispose d'un champ de vision de 180 degrés, ce qui lui permet de réduire le nombre de stations observées pour une observation circulaire et d'augmenter la densité du champ de radar à l’aide du chevauchement de la zone de détection.

 

Un autre avantage important de la station réside dans ses caractéristiques économiques : le radar est monté à partir de modules préfabriqués, ce qui facilite et baisse le coût du montage.

 

Le complexe déployé en Mordovie est composé de plusieurs tours avec des antennes placées sur elles, ainsi que de plusieurs modules dotés du matériel pour le traitement des signaux. Le complexe de réception se trouve près de la ville de Kovylkino. Le radar émetteur 29B6 est situé à environ 300 kilomètres de là, dans la région de Nijni Novgorod, près de la ville de Gorodets.

 

Une deuxième station du projet Konteïner sera construite dans l'Extrême-Orient russe. En tout, six stations de ce type seront mises en service d’ici à 2020. Avec les radars Voronej, ils assureront une protection complète des frontières russes, détectant d’éventuels missiles balistiques, les vols d'avions, les aéronefs, les véhicules aériens sans pilote et des missiles de croisière semi-furtifs.

Australia promotes new radar technologies

 

CANBERRA, Australia, Dec. 2 (UPI)

 

Phased array radar technologies are being developed in Australia by CEA Technologies under contract from the government.

 

The award was given to CEA Technologies, which will leverage its CEAFAR phased array radar for the project.

 

"The CEAFAR radar is currently being fitted to the ANZAC -class frigates as part of a major upgrade," said Minister for Defense David Johnston. "This radar is a world-leading capability for a system of its weight and size and importantly, is considerably more cost-effective than comparable systems.

 

"The development of high-power phased array radar based on the CEAFAR system builds on the substantial investment in domestic radar-related research and development."

 

CEAFAR is a 3D active phased array radar with a microwave tile-based design and is scalable in size and optimized for littoral and open ocean.

 

Details of the contract awarded to CEA Technologies were not provided by the Australian Department of Defense, which announced the award.

The UK Royal Navy's new Queen Elizabeth-class (QE) aircraft carrier, HMS Queen Elizabeth, has been fitted with large long range radar.

 

With the installation of main radar antenna onto the forward island, the aircraft carrier's main structure blocks are now in place.

 

Designed to provide a three dimensional and long-range picture, the radar can track up to 1,000 contacts up to a range of 400km away from the vessel.

 

Recently, HMS Queen Elizabeth has been fitted with final ramp section of the flight deck, at the Rosyth shipyard, Scotland.

 

The 64m-long and 13m-wide ramp section, which will allow jet aircraft to take off from the ship, is the final exterior piece of the aircraft carrier to be integrated.

 

Queen Elizabeth-class carriers will have a full-load displacement capacity of 65,000t, an operational range of 10,000nm and can carry up to 40 aircraft.

"The radar can track up to 1,000 contacts up to a range of 400km away."

 

Aircraft Carrier Alliance (ACA), a joint venture between Babcock Thales, BAE Systems and the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), is constructing these two new aircraft carriers HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince Of Wales.

 

Powered by two Rolls-Royce Marine 36MW MT30 gas turbine alternators, the carriers can accommodate a crew of 1,200, including an aircrew of 600.

 

Expected to be structurally complete next year, HMS Queen Elizabeth is scheduled to commence sea trials in 2017, followed by Lightning II aircraft flight trials in 2018.

 

HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince Of Wales are expected to be operational with the Royal Navy in 2016 and 2018 respectively, replacing the Invincible-class vessels.

Northrop to Supply Air Defense Radar Systems to Royal Thai Air Force

Northrop Grumman Corporation has been selected by the Royal Thai Air Force to supply additional AN/TPS-78 air defense and surveillance radar systems.

 

Under the terms of the contract, Northrop Grumman will begin supplying equipment to the Royal Thai Air Force in 2015. The company will also provide training, spares and logistics support.

 

“With this award, we continue our 25 years of support of the Royal Thai Air Force and the national security infrastructure of Thailand,” said Robert Royer, vice president of Northrop Grumman’s International Systems business unit. “Highly mobile and proven in a wide range of environmental conditions, the AN/TPS-78 will give the Royal Thai Air Force a powerful new capability for monitoring its national airspace.”

 

The Northrop Grumman AN/TPS-78 is among the latest generation of highly mobile, state-of-the-art radars made possible by advances in high power transistor technology and designed to operate in some of the harshest, most demanding environments. The radar has proven particularly adept at detecting small targets in areas of difficult land and sea clutter, making it well suited for use in mountainous and coastal regions.

 

The S-Band, long-range AN/TPS-78 is in use with the U.S. Air Force and a variety of customers worldwide. To date, AN/TPS-78 systems have logged more than 1 million operating hours.
