    Collaborative system to protect ships against swarming-boat threat

 

Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN), acting through its Missile Systems business, and Chemring Group (LSE: CHG), acting through Chemring Countermeasures, successfully fired a Javelin missile from the multirole CENTURION® launcher during testing at the Defence Training Estate on Salisbury Plain in England.

Raytheon has completed the final phase of compatibility testing of precision-guided Excalibur projectiles with the German-made PzH2000 self-propelled howitzer in collaboration with the US Army, marking completion of a multi-phase assessment.

 

During the trials carried out at Yuma Proving Ground, the PzH2000 fired ten Excalibur projectiles at targets ranging from 9km to 48km, with all rounds striking within 3m of the targets.

 

The live-fire demonstration, funded by the US, Germany and supported by Raytheon-funded initial testing, also demonstrated the projectile's capability to manoeuvre from the ballistic trajectory to an offset target.

 

Raytheon Missile Systems Land Warfare Systems product line vice-president Michelle Lohmeier said: "The PzH2000 is one of many highly capable cannon artillery systems currently deployed, and now we've proven that it can fire the only mature, true precision solution available today."

 

In October, Raytheon also tested the Excalibur from the Swedish Archer and US howitzers.

 

The German Ministry of Defence is currently assessing Excalibur and competitive technologies, with a contract decision anticipated next year.

 

US Army Excalibur programme manager Lt Col Josh Walsh said: "Raytheon's Excalibur is a combat-proven solution that has been fielded and used in combat since 2007 with nearly 700 firings in coalition operations."

 

In a bid to validate the production readiness of Excalibur Ib, Raytheon would carry out a first article test by the end of the year, with further plans of a live-fire demonstration of the 'Excalibur-S' early next year.

 

The 155mm precision-guided, extended-range Excalibur deploys GPS guidance, which would allow précised, first-round effects capability in any situation, while reducing time, cost and logistical load associated with using other artillery munitions.

Astrium, Raytheon team to compete for NATO ballistic missile defense work

Astrium, the world's second largest space company, and Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) signed a teaming agreement that formalizes the companies' plans to compete for the role as lead system engineers and integrators for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's Ballistic Missile Defense Program.

 

NATO's BMD Program oversees the development and execution of ballistic missile defense capabilities, which expanded in 2012 to include the defense of European populations and territories.

 

"This transatlantic team has a proven, successful track record supporting national and NATO missile defense," said Yannick Devouassoux, Astrium's Head of Missile Defense and NATO Programmes. "The Astrium-Raytheon team will provide sound, innovative, and cost-effective solutions to help develop NATO's future ballistic missile defense capability."

 

The NATO BMD System Engineering and Integration contract will establish the contractual requirements for territorial defense, while helping create a NATO command and control network architecture for Europe. It will also provide a test infrastructure for the new architecture.

 

"With more than 30 years' experience in ballistic missiles development and production, ballistic battle analysis, and threat modeling, Astrium is a leader in European missile defense," said George Mavko, Raytheon Missile Systems' Director of European Missile Defense. "Combined with Raytheon's decades of experience in ballistic missile defense interceptors, radars and space sensors, this partnership will provide Europe the best, most affordable missile defense protection."

 

Once awarded, the contract will call for a 7-year period of performance with an estimated value of 67.6 million Euros (US $91 million).

    SM-6 achieves initial operational capability

 

The U.S. Navy is deploying Raytheon Company's (NYSE: RTN) Standard Missile-6 for the first time, marking the initial operational capability milestone for the U.S. Navy's newest, most advanced extended range area defense weapon.

"The SM-6, with its ability to extend the battlespace, truly offers improved capability for the warfighter. I'm very proud of the entire STANDARD Missile team on this historic achievement."

 

The SM-6 provides extended range protection against fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles and cruise missiles. The interceptor combines the airframe and propulsion of legacy Standard Missiles with the advanced signal processing and guidance control capabilities of the Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM).

 

"This is a monumental moment for the SM-6 program and signifies a new era of fleet defense for our naval warfighters," said Dr. Taylor W. Lawrence, president, Raytheon Missile Systems. "The SM-6 significantly improves the sailor's ability to strike at various targets at extended range."

 

Raytheon has delivered more than 50 SM-6 interceptors to the Navy under low-rate production contracts. In September, Raytheon won a contract for $243 million to build 89 new SM-6 interceptors, signaling the start of full-rate production.

US Navy’s SM-6 missile reaches initial operational capability

The US Navy's Raytheon-developed Standard Missile-6 (SM-6) tactical missile has achieved initial operation capability following its successful installation onboard Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile vessel USS Kidd (DDG 100) in San Diego, California, US.

 

Designed to provide extended range protection for naval vessels against cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and fixed and rotary wing aircraft, the SM-6 missile entered full rate production while the programme has delivered 50 missiles ahead of schedule and under budget.

 

Surface Ship Weapons major programme manager captain Mike Ladner the SM-6 missile has achieved initial operational capability on schedule.

 

"The SM-6, with its ability to extend the battle space, truly improves shipboard air defence capability," Ladner said.

 

The missile is scheduled to undergo follow-on test and evaluation in 2013 and 2014 aimed to demonstrate the integrated fire control capability in an operationally realistic environment.

 

In May 2013, Raytheon's SM-6 had received full-rate production approval from the US Defense Acquisition Board.

 

Capable of offering over-the-horizon air defence capability, the missile features advanced signal processing and guidance control capabilities of the advanced medium-range air-to-air missile (AMRAAM).

 

Raytheon Standard Missile one, two, and six programmes senior director Mike Campisi said the company delivered the first SM-6 production round to the US Navy in February 2011.

 

Forming part of a major component in the US Navy's naval integrated fire control-counter air (NIFC-CA), the system uses both active and semi-active guidance modes and advanced fusing techniques to protect against several air threats.

Nammo Group has delivered an additional AIM-120 advanced medium range air-to-air missile (AMRAAM) rocket motor to Raytheon.

 

Representing an overall 1,000th AMRAAM rocket to have been delivered to date by Nammo, the newly delivered rocket is scheduled to be installed in an under-production AIM-120C7 missile later this month.

 

Nammo is supplying motors at the rate of approximately 90 motors a month, after being certified as an AMRAAM rocket motor supplier for Raytheon following a lengthy qualification process in October 2012.

 

Raytheon Missile Systems AMRAAM programme director Ronald Krebs said the Raytheon-Nammo partnership has been a model of success throughout 2012.

 

"Raytheon has worked extremely hard to make certain our end-user customers continue to receive AMRAAM missiles on schedule," Krebs said.

 

Raytheon Missile Systems president Dr Taylor Lawrence said, "The teamwork between Raytheon and Nammo has contributed significantly to our shared success."

 

Under development since 1998, the AIM-120C-7 is an upgraded variant of the AIM-120C AMRAAM missile, featuring extended range and enhancements in homing capability.

 

The missile is currently being manufactured for both domestic and foreign military customers.

 

Powered by a solid-propellant rocket motor, the AIM-120 is a beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) designed for all-weather, day-and-night operations, and represents the US military's standard air intercept missile carried on tactical fighter aircraft.

 

Having demonstrated operational flexibility in both air-to-air and surface-launch engagement scenarios, the AMRAAM also serves the baseline missile for the Nato-approved national advanced surface-to-air missile system (NASAMS) long range air-defence system.

 

The combat-proven missile is purchased by 36 countries worldwide, and is currently integrated on the F-16, F-15, F/A-18, F-22, Typhoon, Gripen, Tornado, Harrier and F-4 fighters, while installation is underway on the F-35 Lightning II joint strike fighter (JSF) aircraft.

Javelin Joint Venture Awarded $176 Million for Javelin Weapon System

The Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) and Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) Javelin Joint Venture received a $176 million contract for the production and delivery of 842 Block I Javelin missile rounds and 120 command launch units (CLUs). The contract was awarded to the Javelin Joint Venture in September.

 

The missiles will be provided through the U.S. government to the U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps and three international customers: Oman, Jordan and Indonesia. Funded with Special Defense Acquisition Funds, the CLUs will be delivered to the U.S. Army beginning October 2014.

 

“The Javelin Joint Venture is providing U.S. and allied warfighters with an affordable, versatile and lethal one-man-portable, anti-tank, guided missile and surveillance weapon,” said Jeff Miller, Raytheon Javelin program director and Javelin Joint Venture president. “This contract is important to the Javelin program because the CLU retrofit business keeps our production line warm through mid-2015.”

 

Javelin enhances direct-fire capability against armored vehicles, buildings and field fortifications. Using the Javelin missile system, a single infantryman can engage and defeat targets in close combat and at ranges up to two-and-a-half kilometers.

U.S. Navy orders more radars, fire control systems for Aegis

 

 

TEWKSBURY, Mass., Nov. 18 (UPI)

 

More AN/SPY-1 radar transmitters and MK99 fire control systems for the U.S. Navy's Aegis missile system are being produced by Raytheon.

 

Raytheon, which has produced the systems critical to Aegis for decades, said the multi-year order from the Navy is worth $406 million.

 

"Through our long-standing role on the Aegis program, we continue to build on our core radar expertise, consistently delivering reliable and highly-capable components to support the mission needs of naval fleets," said Kevin Peppe, vice president of Seapower Capability Systems for Raytheon's Integrated Defense Systems. "Our history of performance is a testament to our extensive legacy of experience in the design and development of complex radars."

 

Aegis is an advanced weapons system deployed on U.S. Japanese, Korean and Norwegian ships to protect against airborne threats, including ballistic missiles.

 

The AN/SPY-1 radar transmitters and MK99 Fire Control Systems perform the search, track and missile guidance functions of the system, which is being adapted for shore use as part of the U.S. ballistic missile defense system.

Turkey is hoping to finalise negotiations to acquire its first long-range anti-missile system from China in six months’ time, the head of the country’s procurement agency said Thursday.

 

“The immediate goal for us is in about six months to come to a reasonable level in our contract negotiations and to understand whether it’s possible to implement this program,” Murad Bayar, head of undersecretariat for defense industries, told reporters in Istanbul.

 

In September, Turkish decision-makers gave the greenlight to begin contract negotiations with the China Precision Machinery Export-Import Corporation (CPMIEC), which is under US sanctions for selling arms and missile technology to Iran and Syria.

 

CPMIEC, which makes the HQ-9 missile system, beat competition from a US partnership of Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, Russia’s Rosoboronexport, and Italian-French consortium Eurosam for the deal, estimated at $4 billion (2.9 billion euros).

 

Bayar said if negotiations with the Chinese company that made the top of the Turkish list failed, the authorities would then evaluate the other bidders.

 

“If there are difficulties that we may have not foreseen, if this is not possible then we will go down” the list, he said.

 

The decision to go with CPMIEC irritated Turkey’s NATO allies, particularly the United States, which voiced “serious concerns” and sent delegations for expert-level discussions with Turkish authorities.

 

NATO has said the missile systems within the transatlantic military alliance must be compatible with each other.

 

Turkey, a NATO member since 1952, has defended its decision to enter into talks with the Chinese company, but said it is open to new bids should the negotiations collapse.

    US-Japan co-development program on track for 2015 flight testing

 

Raytheon Company and its Japanese partner, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, have completed the Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IIA guided missile Critical Design Review (CDR). The CDR verified that the missile's design will meet the stringent, specific operational performance requirements necessary to defeat the projected threats. The SM-3 Block IIA will defeat incoming ballistic missile threats by colliding with them in space, and the program is on track to begin flight testing in 2015.

 

In a precedent-setting co-development effort between allies, the U.S. and Japan have determined an equitable workshare agreement that defines by missile section the development responsibility between each country.

Latest selection of integrated EW system - ACES - for F-16 aircraft marks 4th international contract

 

Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) has been selected by Lockheed Martin Aeronautics to provide its Advanced Countermeasure Electronic System (ACES) for the second group of Iraq's F-16IQ aircraft ordered this year. ACES was also selected by Lockheed Martin in 2012 for the first group of F-16IQs and is the integrated electronic warfare system of choice for other international air forces.

Raytheon Company and the U.S. Air Force concluded a series of test flights with the Small Diameter Bomb II (SDB II) culminating in direct hits on targets moving at operationally representative speeds. SDB II can hit targets from a range of more than 40 nautical miles. It has a powerful warhead capable of destroying armored targets, yet keeps collateral damage to a minimum through a small explosive footprint. It is highly accurate and offers warfighters the flexibility to change targets through a datalink that passes inflight updates to the weapon.

 

“These successes are the latest in a series of test flights demonstrating Raytheon’s readiness to progress the SDB II program to the System Verification Review and Milestone C,” said John O’Brien, SDB II program director for Raytheon Missile Systems. “These tests showcase the game-changing capability of Raytheon’s tri-mode seeker to detect, track and engage moving targets in adverse weather.”

 

According to Raytheon, earlier supporting tests were performed in a multitude of different environments and scenarios, key to maturing seeker algorithms and validating the weapon’s aerodynamic performance. “All test flights helped reinforce the system’s capability to satisfy a critical warfighter need.” the announcement said. The Department of Defense has invested more than $700 million in the SDB II program.

 

Under another test program Raytheon, with the US Navy have recently confirmed testing the capability to guide the newest version of the Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) C-1 by from an E-2D airborne early warning and control aircraft. The team demonstrated how an F/A-18E/F Super Hornet aircraft, an E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft and the JSOW C-1 can network together for such task.

 

The test was part of the Navy’s Trident Warrior 2013 demonstration in July. During the demonstration, fighters simulated the launch of a JSOW C-1 while the E-2D directed the weapon toward the positively identified target. The E-2D aircraft also received status updates sent from the JSOW C-1.

 

“The success of the Trident Warrior 2013 demonstration proves the feasibility of providing the fleet a means of executing the complete kill chain with carrier-based assets utilizing the F/A-18E/F, JSOW C-1 and E-2D to engage maritime targets at range,” said Cmdr. Errol Campbell, the U.S. Navy’s Precision Strike Weapons program office deputy program manager for the JSOW program.

 

Additionally, the team was able to track and designate a target; simulate the launch of the JSOW; send, receive and acknowledge target updates; and receive bomb hit indication data from the weapon.

 

“This test further verifies the flexibility and seamless plug-and-play connectivity of JSOW C-1′s network-enabled capability,” said Celeste Mohr, JSOW program director for Raytheon Missile Systems. “The test demonstrates the relative ease with which the U.S. Navy can build on the ongoing integration of the JSOW C-1 on the U.S. Navy’s F/A-18 and expand the interoperability and connectivity to a fielded carrier-capable tactical airborne early warning aircraft.”

 

In 2009, the Navy performed a similar demonstration of connectivity and interoperability among sensor platforms, a shooting platform and the JSOW C-1 during the Joint Surface Warfare Joint Capability Technology Demonstration. This demonstration involved a P-3 Orion aircraft’s littoral surveillance radar system and an E-8C Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System aircraft.

Défense antimissile: le Japon sera muni d'un 2e radar US

Le Japon sera équipé d'un second radar du système américain de défense antimissile dans la préfecture de Kyoto, a annoncé jeudi à Washington le chef du Pentagone Chuck Hagel à l'issue d'entretiens des ministres américain et nippon de la Défense et des Affaires étrangères.

 

"La défense antimissile est prioritaire compte tenu de la menace que les missiles balistiques nord-coréens présentent pour nos pays, la région et le monde entier. Nous avons annoncé aujourd'hui que nous allions installer un second radar dans la préfecture de Kyoto. Il renforcera le potentiel des Etats-Unis et du Japon", a indiqué M.Hagel.

 

Le ministre américain de la Défense a annoncé l'intention de Washington de renforcer le système de défense antimissile d'ici 2017 afin de contrer la menace balistique nord-coréenne. Les Etats-Unis envisagent notamment de déployer 14 missiles-intercepteurs supplémentaires en Alaska où ils disposeront ainsi de 44 missiles.

The U.S. Navy awarded Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) a $243,478,659 contract for procurement of 89 Standard Missile-6 Block I all up rounds, spares, containers and services. The contract was awarded in Raytheon's third quarter.

 

About the Standard Missile-6   

The SM-6 provides U.S. Navy sailors and their vessels extended range protection against fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles and cruise missiles as part of the Naval Integrated Fire Control-Counter Air (NIFC-CA) mission area.

Raytheon's Griffin Missile Demos Maritime Protection Capabilities

Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) and the U.S. Navy demonstrated the Griffin® missile's combat proven capabilities in a maritime environment by successfully engaging fast-moving small boats from various platforms throughout a series of at-sea tests.

 

During one of the tests, the MK-60 Patrol Coastal Griffin Missile System was integrated on a Cyclone-class Patrol Coastal-class ship, where the missile was employed against remote-controlled boats simulating a threat to the ship.

 

"The Griffin missile and the MK-60 System provide the accuracy and lethality required to meet the requirements of our operational testing," said Capt. Mike Ladner, major program manager of Surface Ship Weapons, U.S. Navy Integrated Warfare Systems 3.0 program office.

 

The most recent test, conducted at the Navy's Point Mugu, Calif., sea test range, marked the completion of a quick reaction assessment that will lead to fielding of the Griffin missile on forward deployed Patrol Coastal ships later this year.

 

"The Griffin missile is ideally suited for protecting Navy ships against the increasing small boat threat," said Harry Schulte, vice president of Air Warfare Systems for Raytheon Missile Systems. "Griffin is fully developed, lightweight and precise. It is designed with confined lethality to minimize collateral effects and maximize operational effectiveness."

 

The MK-60 Patrol Coastal Griffin Missile System includes a proven laser targeting system as well as a Navy-designed launcher and battle management system featuring the Griffin missile. This system will provide the Navy's Patrol Coastal class ships with their first operational capability against small boat threats outside of current gun range.

 

About Griffin

The Griffin missile is a multi-platform, multi-service weapon that has a proven track record for successful rapid integration with land, sea and air assets. The combat-proven Griffin AGM-176A is an aft-eject missile designed for employment from platforms such as the C-130 aircraft. The Griffin BGM-176B is a forward-firing missile that launches from rotary- and fixed-wing aircraft, ground-launch applications and maritime platforms. The Griffin missile is 43 inches long, weighs 33 pounds, has a 13-pound warhead, and is in production today.

 

Griffin enables the warfighter to engage targets via a simple user interface and guide the weapon to the target using GPS coordinates exclusively or with laser designation. To maximize lethality, the user can choose to engage the target with direct attack or high impact angle, and has the option of using height of burst, point detonation or delayed fuzing.

Le Pentagone notifie la possible vente de missiles air-air Sidewinder à la Belgique

WASHINGTON/ BRUXELLES - Une agence du Pentagone chargé des exportations de matériel militaire américain vient de notifier au Congrès la possible vente à la Belgique de 40 missiles air-air produits par le groupe de défense Raytheon pour équiper les chasseurs F-16 ainsi que les équipements associés pour un montant de 68 millions de dollars (plus de 50 millions d'euros).Selon la "Defense Security Cooperation Agency", le gouvernement belge a sollicité les Etats-Unis pour un possible achat, en vertu de la procédure FMS ("Foreign Military Sale") d'Etat à Etat de 40 missiles AIM-9X-2 Sidewinder Block II ainsi que divers équipements associés (dont 36 missiles d'entraînement CATM-9X-2, de deux unités de guidage CATM-9X-2 Block II, et dix unités de guidage tactique AIM-9X-2 Block II et de quatre missiles d'entraînement factices), un soutien logistique et en matière d'entraînement. Le Pentagone a notifié jeudi cette possible vente au Congrès américain, en expliquant qu'elle "contribuerait à la politique étrangère et à la sécurité nationale des Etats-Unis en aidant à accroître la sécurité d'un allié de l'Otan qui continue à être une force importante pour la stabilité politique et économique en Europe". Selon le ministère américain de la Défense, la Force aérienne belge envisage d'utiliser les Sidewinder AIM-9X - la dernière version d'une famille prolifique de missiles air-air - dans le cadre de son programme global de modernisation.

Défense aérienne : la Turquie met KO Américains et Européens

Pourtant membre de l'OTAN, la Turquie a choisi un groupe chinois, CPMIEC, pour la fourniture d'un système de défense aérienne stratégique pour Ankara. Un contrat évalué à 4 milliards de dollars. C'est une énorme gifle pour les américains Raytheon et Lockheed Martin ainsi que les français MBDA et Thales.

 

C'est une énorme surprise... et un choix totalement incompréhensible au regard des alliances internationales. La Chine a remporté jeudi un appel d'offres de 4 milliards de dollars lancé par la Turquie portant sur l'acquisition de systèmes de missiles anti-aériens et de missiles de longue portée. Le sous-secrétariat de l'Industrie de la Défense (SSM) a "décidé d'entamer les pourparlers avec la compagnie CPMIEC de la République populaire de Chine pour la production conjointe des systèmes et de leurs missiles en Turquie sur le prix négocié", selon un communiqué.

 

C'est aussi un énorme claque pour le consortium américain formé par Raytheon et Lockheed Martin mais aussi pour le groupe franco-italien Eurosam (MBDA et Thales) et à un degré moindre le russe Rosoboronexport. Cela risque de tanguer les jours prochains entre Ankara et Washington. Pourquoi un tel choix ? Selon le magazine "Defence News", les Chinois auraient proposé à Ankara trois milliards de dollars, un prix défiant toute concurrence pour un contrat estimé pourtant à 4 milliards de dollars

 

La Turquie pays membre de l'OTAN

 

Pourtant, en janvier, l'Otan avait commencé à déployer des missiles sol-air Patriot pour protéger la Turquie d'un éventuel débordement du conflit syrien. Les batteries de missiles Patriot, destinées à assurer la défense du territoire turc contre les avions et les missiles à courte portée, ont été fournies par les Etats-Unis, l'Allemagne et les Pays-Bas.

 

Thales et MBDA espéraient beaucoup en Turquie. D'autant qu'il existait de nombreux contacts à haut niveau entre les deux pays. François Hollande avait d'ailleurs récemment rencontré son homologue turc, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, pour lui proposer une visite d'Etat.

This is support of foreign military sales to Kuwait.

 

Performance location will be Andover, Mass., with funding from fiscal 2013 other authorizations funds. This contract was a con-competitive acquisition with one bid received.

Raytheon Co., El Segundo, Calif., is being awarded $39,000,000 for firm-fixed-price delivery order 0048 against a previously issued basic ordering agreement (N00019-10-G-0006) for the procurement of 15 AN/APG-79 AESA radar systems for the F/A-18 E/F aircraft.

Work will be performed in Forest, Miss. (80 percent), and El Segundo, Calif. (20 percent), and is expected to be completed in November 2015.

Fiscal 2013 aircraft procurement, Navy contract funds in the amount of $39,000,000 are being obligated on this award, none of which will expire at the end of the current fiscal year.

The Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Md., is the contracting activity.

Work will be performed in Melbourne, Fla. (75 percent); St. Louis, Mo. (21 percent); North Reading, Mass. (1.6 percent); and various other locations in the United States (2.4 percent); is expected to be completed in August 2015.

This contract combines purchases for the U.S. Navy ($17,750,379, 72 percent) and the Government of Australia ($6,825,054, 28 percent) under the foreign military sales (FMS) program.

Fiscal 2013 aircraft procurement, Navy and FMS contract funds in the amount $24,575,433 will be obligated at the time of award; none of which expire at the end of the current fiscal year.

Raytheon completes critical component of ninth AN/TPY-2 ballistic missile defense radar

Production milestone keeps next radar on schedule for 2014 delivery

 

Raytheon Company has completed the manufacturing of an Antenna Equipment Unit for the AN/TPY-2 ballistic missile defense radar. An integral part of the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS), the AN/TPY-2 searches, discriminates between threats and non-threats, acquires and tracks threat ballistic missiles.

AN/TPY-2 is a mobile X-band radar that helps protect the U.S., warfighters, and America's allies and security partners from the more than 6,300 ballistic missiles the Missile Defense Agency estimates are not controlled by the U.S., NATO, China or Russia. The Antenna Equipment Unit is one of the four major components that comprise the AN/TPY-2 ballistic missile defense radar, and completing the AEU is critical to ensuring Raytheon delivers the ninth radar system to the Missile Defense Agency in early 2014.

"Because of the high demand from forces worldwide, Raytheon remains committed to maintaining its track record of delivering the AN/TPY-2 on cost and on schedule," said David Gulla, vice president of Global Integrated Sensors for Raytheon's Integrated Defense Systems business. The AN/TPY-2 may be deployed globally in either terminal or forward-based mode. In terminal mode, the AN/TPY-2 serves as the search, detect, track, discrimination and fire-control radar for the THAAD weapon system, enabling the THAAD missile to intercept and destroy threats. In forward-based mode, the AN/TPY-2 cues the BMDS by detecting, discriminating and tracking enemy ballistic missiles in the ascent phase of flight.

First-Time SM-3 Block 1B Pairs Launch Successful

The US Navy has carried out a first-time paired SM-3 Block 1B missile launch against a short-range ballistic missile in a test conducted in September 2013.

 

The Standard Missile-3s were launched one after the other from the USS Lake Erie Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser. Conforming to pre-mission requirements, the first missile took out the airborne target. It wasn't planned that the second missile would engage with the target but, as anticipated, the launch yielded valuable data on multiple weapons deployments.

 

The trial represented the 25th time that Standard Missiles-3s have been launched and the fourth consecutive launch involving the new-generation SM-3 Block 1B version.

 

Standard Missile-3 Block 1B

 

The Standard Missile-3 Block 1B is an upgrade of the SM-3 Block 1A, which is in widespread military service. It boasts an augmented dual-colour infrared seeker and another new feature - the Throttleable Divert and Attitude Control System.

 

Between them, the US Navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force are equipped with over 155 SM-3 missiles. The SM-3 Block 1B follow-up is both land and sea-deployable and initial system deliveries will take place in 2015, according to current scheduling.

 

The missile is produced by Raytheon, which employs more than 68,000 people and, last year, achieved a sales total of $24 billion.

 

SM-3 Block 1B Test Launch

 

"Confidence in the SM-3 Block IB's defensive capability continues to grow with each flight test", Raytheon Missile Systems president, Doctor Taylor Lawrence, explained in the firm's SM-3 Block 1B test launch press release. "When this weapon deploys in 2015, the US and our allies will have a tremendously reliable, capable defensive asset on their side."

US Navy launches two Raytheon-made SM-3 missiles against single ballistic missile target

Scenario designed to test ship's ability to launch SM-3s

In a Missile Defense Agency test, the U.S. Navy launched two Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN)-made Standard Missile-3 Block IBs from the USS Lake Erie against a complex, separating short-range ballistic missile target. The first guided missile successfully destroyed the target using the sheer kinetic force of a massive collision in space.

The SM-3 is a defensive weapon used by the U.S. and Japan to defend against short- to intermediate-range ballistic missiles.  

"Confidence in the SM-3 Block IB's defensive capability continues to grow with each flight test," said Dr. Taylor Lawrence, Raytheon Missile Systems president. "When this weapon deploys in 2015, the U.S. and our allies will have a tremendously reliable, capable defensive asset on their side."

During the test, two SM-3 interceptors were launched at a single target consecutively. The first SM-3 eliminated the target. The second SM-3 was designed to test the ship weapons system's ability to launch multiple missiles at one time against a threat. An intercept for the second SM-3 was not part of the test scenario.

The test was the 25th successful flight test for the SM-3 program and the fourth back-to-back successful test of the next-generation SM-3 Block IB variant. Based on the highly successful SM-3 Block IA currently deployed around the world today, the SM-3 Block IB incorporates an enhanced two-color infrared seeker and the Throttleable Divert and Attitude Control System, a mechanism that propels the missile toward incoming targets.

Raytheon awarded $14 million for HARM Control Section Modification Lot 2 contract

TUCSON, Ariz., Sept. 17, 2013 /PRNewswire

 

The U.S. Air Force awarded Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) a $14 million Lot 2 contract to continue full rate production of High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missile (HARM) Control Section Modification (HCSM) upgrade units.

 

The modification adds a GPS receiver and an improved inertial measurement unit (IMU) for precision navigation to the existing HARM. HCSM also features a digital flight computer that merges targeting solutions from navigation and seeker systems.

 

"HCSM upgrades to the HARM allow the enhanced weapon to precisely engage the target set," said Jack Roosa, HARM program director for Raytheon Missile Systems. "These upgrades negate many counter tactics of sophisticated radar-directed defenses and add a stand-off, high-speed strike capability against time critical targets of known location."

 

Raytheon began modification of existing HARMs early this year. Delivery of HCSM units is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2013. Raytheon has teamed with Honeywell, Rockwell Collins and others for the HCSM program.

 

The contract was awarded in Raytheon's second quarter of 2013.

Raytheon, Falck Schmidt unveil remotely operated long-range surveillance system

    Mast-mounted FLIR improves soldier safety

 

Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) and Falck Schmidt Defence Systems are debuting a remotely operated, mast-mounted, long-range reconnaissance and surveillance (LRRS) forward looking infrared (FLIR) system. The new system, displayed at the DSEI trade show, provides greater situational awareness while enhancing soldier safety by allowing the operator to stay under cover.

 

"Raytheon's FLIR sensor allows warfighters to detect targets outside the direct-fire range, 24 hours a day, so they can identify and locate targets before they become threats," said Jeff Miller, vice president of Combat and Sensing Systems for Raytheon Missile Systems.

 

LRRS sensors can be integrated on wheeled or armored combat vehicles and towers.

 

"We have already demonstrated this system to the Danish land forces, and we plan to introduce it soon in the U.S. at the AUSA trade show," said Steen Garnaes, chief sales officer for Falck Schmidt Defence Systems. "Retrofitting and integrating the latest technologies on armored vehicles improves their performance and increases soldier survivability."
