Bulava launch - Photo Northern Fleet press service

Armata MBT image Army Recognition

August 10, 2012 Tamir Eshel - defense-update.com

The Russian Army is planning to begin modernize its armored and mechanized forces beginning in 2015, fielding a new family of vehicles comprising a new main battle tank, armored infantry fighting vehicles, and various support platforms. The MBT will be based on the new Armata, the prototype is scheduled to enter field trials in 2013, about 10 months ahead of schedule. First Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Sukhorukov said. The new tank is under development at Uralvagonzavod in Omsk. The first deliveries of the tank to the Russian Armed Forces are scheduled for 2015. A total of 2,300 MBTs are expected to be supplied by 2020.

It should be remembered that the Russians are building their fighting forces not only against NATO, but more importantly, to protect their long southern borders with radical Islamic countries that may be gathering military power, and the growing dominance of China in the east. Armored and mechanized forces are key to maintaining military superiority or parity against such threats. The level of sophistication in meeting such threats is not as demanding as meeting the advanced technology fielded by US and NATO forces. According to preliminary reports, the new tank designated T-99 will be less radical and ambitious than the failed ‘Object 195’ or T-95, it will weigh less, therefore, become more agile and will be more affordable, compared to its more ambitious predecessors.

The Russian industry is also developing the Boomerang family of 8×8 wheeled armored vehicles which will gradually replace the current BTR-90. Additionally, the Kurganets-25 tracked armored vehicle provides high degree of commonality with the new Armata tank. The Kurganets-25 will evolve into various models, gradually replacing BMP and BMD and MT-LB and other types of tracked armored platforms.

An artist concept view of the T99. Despite Russian occupation with ever higher caliber guns for their new tanks, the T-99 will be equipped with an improved version of the current 125mm cannon.

Russian Military May Receive New Tank for Testing in 2013

MOSCOW, August 8 (RIA Novosti)

The Russian military may receive a prototype of a new main battle tank (MBT) for field testing almost a year earlier than scheduled, First Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Sukhorukov said on Wednesday.

The tank, dubbed Armata, is being developed by tank manufacturer Uralvagonzavod in Russia’s Urals region. The Defense Ministry earlier said the field testing of the MBT was expected to start in 2014.

“Uralvagonzavod tells us they will supply a first prototype under the Armata project for testing 10 months ahead of schedule,” Sukhorukov said.

The first deliveries of the tank to the Russian Armed Forces are scheduled for 2015. A total of 2,300 MBTs are expected to be supplied by 2020.

The design of the Armata incorporates work from other projects, including Object 195 and Black Eagle.

The tank will reportedly feature a remotely controlled gun, fully automated loading and separate crew compartment made from composite materials and protected by multi-layered armor.

MOSCOW, August 8 (RIA Novosti)

The Russian military has no plans to cut the financing of an ambitious arms procurement program until 2020, First Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Sukhorukov said on Wednesday.

The government has allocated 20 trillion rubles ($641 billion) on the comprehensive rearmament of Russia's Armed Forces which will see the share of modern weaponry reach 30% by 2015, and total 70% by 2020.

“We do not have any plans to decrease the program’s budget,” Sukhorukov told reporters in Moscow. “We will simply change the financing scheme.”

The new scheme envisions state guarantees to banks that issue loans to defense industry companies involved in the arms procurement program, he added.

As of August 1, the Defense Ministry has signed contracts worth 95.3% of the program’s funding allocated for the current year while defense companies have been paid 82.4% of the total 2012 funding, Sukhorukov said.

The deputy minister also said the government had allocated 128 billion rubles (about $4 bln) in 2012 for the development of new military hardware.

“We have been allocating up to 20.5% of the state defense order for R&D work and we are hoping to maintain this trend,” he said adding that the R&D funding in 2013 is expected to increase to 173 billion rubles ($5.4 bln).

MOSCOW, August 8 (RIA Novosti)

Russia’s Sukhoi aircraft maker has started tests of a new onboard radar system for its 5th generation T-50 fighter jet, the company said on Wednesday.

The new X-band active phased array radar has been installed on the third prototype of the T-50 fighter and showed a stable and effective performance comparable with the most advanced existing radar systems.

The radar has been developed by the Moscow-based Tikhomirov Scientific Research Institute of Instrument Design using elements of nanotechnology.

It has an extended target acquisition range, works simultaneously in “air-to-air” and “air-to-ground” modes, allows attacking multiple targets, and provides electronic countermeasures capabilities.

The T-50, also known as project PAK-FA, first flew in January 2010 and was first publicly revealed at the Moscow Air Show in 2011.

At present, three T-50 prototypes are being tested under a PAK-FA test and development program while a fourth plane is expected to join the program this year.

The Russian Defense Ministry is planning to purchase the first 10 evaluation example aircraft after 2012 and then 60 production standard aircraft after 2015.

25.07.2012 Ukrainian MOD - army-guide.com

KYIV, Ukraine -- The Ukrainian Armed Forces have put into service the modern Ukrainian armored personnel carrier BTR-4E under the Order of the Ukrainian Defense Minister Dmytro Salamatin.

Kharkiv Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau in cooperation with national defense enterprises has designed and manufactured BTR-4E.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces got a new up-to-date weapon system technically comparable with its foreign analogues, while its fire potential is even better.

Mass production of this vehicle will help Ukraine to take the leading positions in the world market of light armor wheeled vehicles.

“Our national designers and Ministry of Defense specialists did a lot of job. We have developed a completely new system, breaking classical traditions of tank building. It’s a basis for future development of different modifications of this armament,” Andriy Artyushenko, Director of Department of Development and Acquisition of Armament and Military Equipment, commented.

He mentioned that BTR-4E armament included 30-mm automatic gun ZTM-1, antitank missile, grenade launcher KBA-117, machine-gun, and other armament manufactured by Ukrainian enterprises. This armament is integrated in a single system of fire control.

“This vehicle proves capabilities of Ukraine to be a manufacturer of high technological and knowledge-based product and ensures possibility to activate defense industries, as well as create additional employment,” Dmytro Salamatin said.

According to the Ukrainian Defense Minister, thanks to BTR-4E Ukraine shall not import these vehicles and even may export them to world markets augmenting the state budget.

Mi-8 Helicopter Upgrades

06/08/2012 Posted by Paul Fiddian - Armed Forces International's Lead Reporter

As many as 400 upgraded Mil Mi-8 utility helicopters are set to enter service with the Russian Air Force over the next eight years.

No less than 50 will be delivered before the end of 2012 and, potentially, they'll be comprised of Mil Mi-8MTV5-1s and Mi-8AMTSh versions.

Already the most widely-produced helicopter design in history, the Russian Mil Mi-8 is, therefore, set to get yet another lease of life and both of the new versions will be on show to the public at an upcoming event that celebrates the Russian Air Force's 100th anniversary.

Mi-8 Helicopter Upgrades

The Mil Mi-8 made its maiden flight in 1961. Introduced in 1967, it's been operated by more than 50 nations during the last 45 years and over 17,000 examples have been built. Some 30 different Mi-8 helicopter upgrades have been developed and they include models that specialise in search and rescue, assault transport and radar-jamming.

Powered by a pair of Klimov TV3 turboshaft engines, the Mi-8 has a top speed of 260 kilometres per hour, a range of 450 kilometres and the capacity to accommodate up to 24 passengers. It can also be equipped with a maximum of 1,500 kilograms of ordnance, such as anti-tank guided missiles and rockets.

Upgraded Russian Air Force Mils

"By the end of the year, up to 50 of the latest Mi-8 models will operate, and by 2020 the air force plans to have more than 400 new Mi-8s", representative Colonel Vladimir Drik told the RIA Novosti news agency in a statement on the upgraded Russian Air Force Mils.

The Russian Air Force's centenary will be celebrated with a huge event in St. Petersburg, where examples of most of its hardware will be on show. These include Sukhoi Su-34 multirole bombers, MiG-29SMT and MiG-31 fighters, MiG-25 spy aircraft, Antonov An-30 and An-72 transporters and Mil-24 helicopter gunships.

That event will be on 11 August while, one day later, there'll be an airshow at Zhukovsky, in Moscow. This will include national display teams alongside a massive array of Russian airpower.

Antonov An-124 source Ria Novisti

ZAPOROJIE (Ukraine), 22 juillet - RIA Novosti

Ukraine's Zaporizhia prepares to submerge into the Black Sea.

Photo MOD Ukraine.

20 July 2012 naval-technology.com

The Ukrainian Navy's Project 641 diesel-electric patrol submarine Zaporizhia (U-01) has successfully completed a day-long sea trial in the Black Sea.

With assistance from the Russian rescue ship Epron, the submarine was successfully submerged in the Black Sea to validate its operational capabilities.

During the trial, the submarine also validated its engines at full speed, as well as its electric motors, battery and the sonar system while cruising at a maximum speed, a senior Navy official said.

As part of the trial, the submersion zone was patrolled by Ukrainian Navy's anti-submarine helicopter, Kamov Ka-27 while the representatives from the Repair Company checked on Zaporizhia's operating characteristics and theoretical calculations.

Ukrainian Defence Minister Dmytro Salamatin said that the Zaporizhia's first submersion after a major overhaul programme marked a significant milestone for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Part of the USSR Northern Fleet, which was turned over to the Black Sea Fleet, the submarine had been undergoing repairs since 1991, with technical maintenance support from Russia and was later adopted by the Ukrainian navy in 1997.

"Zaporizhia's first submersion after a major overhaul programme marks a significant milestone for the Ukrainian Armed Forces."

The Defence Ministry has been postponing the date of completion of the repair of the submarine due to lack of funds, according to the Ukrainian News Agency.

Built in 1972 under the Nato classification, the 91m-long submarine has a surface speed of 16.4k, a submerged speed of 16k and features low radar and noise signatures, according to Zee News.

Expected to enhance the Ukrainian Navy's combat capability, the submarine will be deployed for patrolling the Black Sea, and to conduct rescue and anti-terrorism operations.

Since the beginning of 2012, Zaporizhia has successfully completed three trials and also participated in the Ukrainian-Russian exercise Farvater Myru 2012 at the end of May 2012.

Irkut Corporation is planning a sensor-package upgrade programme for the Yak-130 advanced jet trainer aircraft, a senior company official has revealed.

Alexei Fedorov, Irkut president, was quoted by RIA Novosti as saying that the upgrades are primarily aimed at enabling the use of the aircraft for both advanced weapon training and combat missions.

"We plan to grow the capabilities of this aircraft, fitting a radar and electro-optical, thermal and laser systems. Increasing the Yak-130's combat potential also allows it be potentially used in local conflict situations,'' said Fedorov.

Komstantin Popovich, Irkut vice president, had earlier told Aviation Week that the first stage of upgrades will include installation of an in-flight refuelling system and optronic pod and is estimated to be complete in 2013.

According to Popovich the upgrades involve the integration of radars to provide the aircraft with target detection capabilities for Kh-31, Kh-38 and Kh-29 air-to-ground missiles.

Three options are currently being evaluated by the company, including a slot array antenna radar from Phazotron-NIIR, onboard radar from Tikhomirov-NIIP and a radar pod from St. Petersburg's Leninetz plant.

Developed by Yakovlev design bureau, the Yak-130 is a subsonic two-seat advanced jet trainer/light attack aircraft designed to train pilots in flying advanced fourth- and fifth-generation fighter aircraft.

The aircraft features advanced digital avionics, full digital glass cockpit, quadruplex-channel digital fly-by-wire System (FBWS) and instructor controlled and variable FBW handling characteristics and embedded simulation.

Capable of carrying a maximum combat load of three tonnes, the aircraft can also be configured to conduct light-attack and reconnaissance missions.

As of January 2012, eight Yak-130s were operational as advanced jet trainer with Russian Air Force, which currently has 65 aircraft on order, with deliveries scheduled to complete by the end of this year.

Tu-95MS source Ria novisti

The "Zaporizhye" submarine of the Ukrainian Navy

MOSCOW, July 19 (RIA Novosti)

Ukraine’s only submarine, the Zaporozhye, underwent first-stage sea trials including running submerged on Wednesday after undergoing a major refit, Kommersant Ukraine reported on Thursday.

The boat was submerged in the Black Sea for the first time in 18 years during the trial, Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Yury Ilyin said. The tests will continue until Friday.

Surface tests of the submarine’s power plant and other key equipment were held in April.

A Soviet-era Foxtrot class (Project 641) diesel-electric submarine, Zaporozhye was laid up at a dock in Sevastopol for years before its refit.

Russian engineers repaired and serviced the submarine and a new crew of Ukrainian submariners was trained at Russian naval bases.\

Though the submarine was built 40 years ago, it has been upgraded with new equipment.

Russia, Bulgaria, and Romania also have submarines based in the Black Sea.

(Source: DCNS; issued July 17, 2012)

DCNS Continues BPC Design Modifications for Russia

DCNS is supplying two BPC-type projection and command vessels to Russia under a contract that came into effect at the end of 2011. Three of these vessels are already in service with the French Navy. The design modifications needed to adapt the BPC concept to Russia's specific requirements are progressing as planned.

The design modifications are being conducted in two phases. The first phase ended in April 2012 with the successful completion of the Preliminary Design Review. Detailed design studies were launched immediately afterwards, and this second phase is scheduled for completion in September 2012.

Russia's requirements include modifying the BPC design to accommodate Kamov helicopters and other Russian equipment (excluding weapon systems). The vessels also need to be modified to operate under extreme cold, with higher electrical power availability to de-ice part of the flight deck. All the user interfaces and onboard signage also need to be localised into Russian.

While the design modifications are being finalised, construction of hull blocks for the first of Russia's two BPCs has begun at the STX shipyard in Saint Nazaire. The first 100-tonne hull block will be delivered in September 2012 and laid down in early 2013, marking the beginning of block assembly in the shipbuilding dock.

Russia's OSK shipyards will participate in block construction for the two vessels as a subcontractor to STX, building twelve hull blocks for the aft of the ships.

The first BPC is scheduled for delivery in 2014, three years after the contract came into effect. The second will be delivered in 2015.

The contract calls for the delivery to Russia of two BPC-type vessels along with associated services including initial logistics, training, and technology transfers. DCNS is prime contractor for BPC construction and has responsibility for the integration of the ship’s operations management and communications systems. STX France is building the ships under subcontract to DCNS.

The BPC concept was co-designed by DCNS and STX France to deliver inherently multirole vessels meeting the needs of many navies and ideal for a wide range of civilian and military missions.

With a length of 199 metres, a displacement of 22,000 tonnes and a speed in excess of 18 knots, the BPC offers a global projection capability for troops and materiel, including heavy helicopters and landing craft, as well as ample capacity as a hospital or evacuation vessel for large-scale humanitarian missions. The design also features electric propulsion using azimuth pods and high-level automation compatible with a complement of just 170, while a high-performance communications suite makes the type ideal for the naval force command vessel role.

The first two ships of this type, Mistral and Tonnerre, were built by DCNS and STX France and delivered to the French Navy in 2006 and 2007 respectively. France's third BPC, Dixmude, ordered by the French defence procurement agency in 2009, was delivered by DCNS and STX France on 3 January 2012, three months ahead of the contract schedule.

DCNS is a world leader in naval defence and an innovative player in energy. The Group’s success as an advanced technology company with global reach is built on meeting customer needs by deploying exceptional know-how and unique industrial resources. DCNS designs, builds and supports submarines and surface combatants as well as associated systems and infrastructure. The Group employs 12,800 people and generates annual revenues of around €2.6 billion.

Yak-130 aircraft source Ria Novisti

IRKUTSK, July 18 (RIA Novosti)

Russian aircraft maker Irkut is planning a sensor-package upgrade program for the Yak-130 advanced jet trainer, including the installation of radar and electro-optical systems, Irkut head Alexei Fedorov said on Wednesday.

"We plan to 'grow' the capabilities of this aircraft, fitting a radar and electro-optical, thermal and laser systems," Fedorov said. The upgrades are primarily to enable the aircraft to be used for advanced weapon training, he said, as well as combat roles.

"Increasing the Yak-130's combat potential also allows it be potentially used in local conflict situations," he said.

The Yak-130 is an advanced jet trainer, suitable for converting pilots to flying advanced fourth- and fifth-generation fighter aircraft. It has advanced "glass cockpit" multifunction cockpit displays, and is highly maneuverable. The aircraft is currently in production for the Russian Air Force, and a number of export customers including Algeria.

Fedorov said Irkut would be ready to carry out a previousy signed contract with Syria for delivery of the Yak-130, if and when political approval was given. Russia has a $550-million contract with Syria for the delivery of 36 Yak-130s.

"We'll be ready to fulfil the contract when we get an indication from the government," he said.

Last week, on the sidelines of the Farnborough Air Show in Britain, the deputy head of Russia's military-technicial cooperation commission, Vyacheslav Dzirkaln, said Russia had decided to suspend the Yak-130 contract to Syria while the country was in a state of internal conflict.

“Until the situation stabilizes, we will not deliver any new weapons [to Syria],” he said.

Irkut will also take part in a Malaysian tender for delivery of 18 advanced jet trainer aircraft which is likely to be announced later this year. Irkut has an advantage in that competition, Fedorov claimed, because Russia has previously delivered aircraft to that state and "we have an after-sales system there," he said. "We also intend to improve our offer with an offset program, and technology transfer," he said.

Irkut has previously delivered Su-30 MKM multirole fighter aircraft to Malaysia.
