Thales welcomes naming of third Astute-class submarine

23 September 2013 Thales UK

HMS Artful, the third of the 7,400-tonne Astute-class nuclear powered attack submarines, has been unveiled and officially named at the Barrow-in-Furness shipyard.

Jeremy Standen, Vice President of Maritime Mission Systems for Thales UK, who attended the naming ceremony, said: “We welcome this latest and significant milestone in the Royal Navy’s Astute-class programme. From across a number of our UK facilities, we have collectively provided the platform with a world-class set of sensor systems that provide the essential ‘eyes and ears’ of the submarine.

“The Artful’s official naming ceremony underlines Thales UK’s strong relationship with the Ministry of Defence and BAE Systems, and we look forward to further co-operation as the remaining submarine builds continue to progress.”

The first submarine, HMS Astute, was officially commissioned into the Royal Navy in August 2010. The Astute-class boats are the UK’s biggest hunter-killer submarines, and one of the most capable military assets in the service.

The Astute-class platform is fitted with a significant number of Thales sensors and systems, including Sonar 2076, the world’s most advanced, fully integrated, passive/active search and attack submarine sonar suite. The class is also fitted with two Thales non-hull penetrating CM010 optronic masts that, together with Sonar 2076, effectively provide the submarine with its mission-critical ‘eyes and ears’.

Thales also supplies the electronic support measures (ESM) system, which has two multi-function antenna arrays mounted on the masts. Other Thales equipment includes the ECB680 communications and SEEPIRB emergency beacon buoys and an Ultra High Frequency (UHF) satellite communications antenna.

As prime contractor, BAE Systems is building a total of seven Astute-class submarines. BAE Systems Maritime – Submarines Combat Systems Director, Ian Hawkes, said: “BAE Systems Maritime – Submarines acknowledges the importance of establishing excellent working relationships with key suppliers. The relationship established with Thales UK during the programme for the first two Astute class submarines has continued to strengthen throughout the build and commissioning of Artful.”

“The Thales UK team has made a significant contribution to activities leading to the naming ceremony of Artful, which is the first UK submarine to be fitted with the Common Combat System, using COTS equipment, which will result in significant through-life cost reductions. Most notably the Thales UK team has played a major role in successful integration of the submarine’s primary sonar and key above water systems.”

Estonian Defence Forces sign new Thales naval support contract

Jul 8, 2013 ASDNews Source : Thales Group

Thales UK has signed a contract with the Estonian Defence Forces to provide an additional four years of technical support and maintenance to two former Royal Navy (RN) mine countermeasures vessels (MCMVs) now serving with the Estonian fleet.

The contract provides a framework to achieve cost savings while accessing a wider range of support activities than previously provided.  Thales offers a complete range of services and support packages to suit specific operational and maintenance requirements.

The two former RN Sandown-class vessels – HMS Sandown and HMS Inverness – were decommissioned and sold to Estonia in 2006. The vessels were re-named ENS Admiral Cowan and ENS Sakala.

As part of a programme to return the two ships to operational service, Thales originally signed a contract in 2006 to provide operational support to the ships in service and upgrades to Thales UK’s highly-successful Sonar 2093 system. This new contract now extends the support programme until December 2016.

Sonar 2093 is a variable-depth sonar system and is designed for the detection and classification of bottom and moored mines. It is optimized for littoral (coastal) and open-ocean waters and is effective against all known mine types.

The system is in service with the RN’s remaining Sandown-class MCMVs, and existing export contracts include Japan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Italy and the Republic of Korea.

Ed Lowe, head of Thales UK’s naval business, said: “We greatly value our relationship with the Estonian Navy and Defence Forces, and see this new contract as a key to providing their ships with the best and most cost-effective long term support that will enable them to meet their important national and NATO commitments.”

Neeme Kass, Director of the Procurement Service in Estonia, said: “This signed agreement is a result of effective cooperation with Thales and is significant for Estonian Defence Forces because our goal is to establish long-term partnerships with professional companies.”

Thales awarded milestone Royal Navy services contract

28 May 2013 Thales UK

Thales UK has today signed a 10-year contract with the Ministry of Defence (MOD), worth up to £600M, for the in-service support of the Royal Navy’s major sensor systems.

The new Sensors Support Optimisation Project (SSOP) builds on the proven success of Thales’s Contractor Logistics Support contract, originally signed in 2003, which has provided support to the Royal Navy’s sonar and electronic warfare systems for the past 10 years.

Under the terms of SSOP, the in-service support contract has now been extended to include all of the Royal Navy’s submarine visual systems, including periscopes for the Vanguard and Trafalgar Class submarines and the non-hull-penetrating optronic masts for the Astute Class submarines, previously supported under separate contract arrangements with Thales UK’s optronics business in Glasgow.

This means Thales is now providing significant in-service support to the ‘eyes and ears’ of the submarine fleet, as well as across the major surface sonar and electronic warfare systems.

The contract will be run through the Equipment Support Delivery Team, which is a joint MOD/Thales UK team based in Abbey Wood, Bristol. This team is augmented by several Thales and J+S Ltd waterfront engineers in the Royal Navy’s three naval bases (Portsmouth, Plymouth and Faslane), who together ensure that specialist technical advice and support is delivered whenever it is needed to ensure the continued availability of the sensor systems, both at home and overseas.

Philip Dunne, Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology, signed the contract during a visit to Thales’s facility in Crawley today.  He said: “This contract is good news for the Ministry of Defence and UK industry. Not only will it secure a number of jobs across the UK whilst delivering savings but will also provide essential support for the combat equipment that helps give the Royal Navy’s fleet of ships and submarines a vital technological edge wherever they are based in the world.”

Victor Chavez, CEO of Thales UK, said: “This contract recognises the value that can be achieved and the savings that can be delivered through a long-term services agreement. It also reflects the successful way in which Thales UK has delivered the required outputs over the past ten years. This project refines that approach to optimise performance over the next ten years, and reinforces our positive well-established relationship with the Royal Navy.”

During the previous support contract, the levels of equipment availability have improved significantly and substantial overall savings in the cost of support have been achieved. The new SSOP contract builds on this experience and success, from the outset delivering further savings to the MOD whilst continuing to deliver high levels of available and serviceable equipment.

The new contract secures employment for 230 Thales employees and a further 300 people within the extended supply chain across the UK.

Major suppliers to Thales include J+S Ltd (Barnstaple, Devon), MacTaggart Scott (Loanhead, Scotland), Atlas Elektronik UK (Newport, South Wales and Winfrith, Dorset), Parkburn Ltd (Telford, Shropshire), AB Precision (Poole) Ltd (Dorset), and Defence Support Group (Sealand, Flintshire).

Thales UK will support the project from its sites in Templecombe, Cheadle Heath, Glasgow and Crawley, where ongoing development of these important systems will enable yet further improvements to be made in the levels of capability and availability.
