The South African Navy has contracted Savcio Holdings (t/a Electrowave Cape) to supply, fit and commissioning a helicopter power unit interface on-board the combat support ship SAS Drakensberg. The R1 078 964,00 contract was awarded last month.

The 147m-long, 12 500mt (full load displacement) Drakensberg is the largest ship built in South Africa to date and was reportedly the first naval vessel to be completely designed in the country. In addition to her replenishment role she is employed on search and rescue duties, patrol and surveillance duties and has considerable potential for use in disaster relief.

The Drakensberg was built by Sandock Austral in Durban. She was laid down in August 1984, launched April 24, 1986 and commissioned November 11, 1987. Replenishment at sea is from two abeam positions or from astern. She is also equipped for jackstay and vertical replenishment. She has two helicopter landing spots, one forward and one astern. Her main secondary role is the transport of consumables, but she can also be used to support small craft and transport a limited number of troops (about 80).

The ship is this year scheduled to complete the second half of its half-life upgrade Project Brutes. The first half was executed in 2009.
