Syria test fired a series of Scud B missiles near the Iraqi border on Saturday, Israeli daily Jerusalem Post reported late Sunday.
The paper cited Israeli military sources as saying that the test “was aimed at showing the international community what the beleaguered [Bashar al-]Assad regime is capable of.”
The sources added that the missile test was not “necessarily intended to intimidate Israel, but rather any Western powers contemplating military intervention in Syria.”
Western powers have repeatedly ruled out military intervention in Syria, but France in past weeks has raised the possibility of establishing “humanitarian corridors” in the strife-stricken country.
Also, the US has deployed an aircraft carrier near Syria and unconfirmed reports indicate that foreign powers might be aiding and training the rebel Free Syrian Army that has conducted ambushes and attacks on Syrian security forces.
