Il carbure à la graisse de bœuf. Le premier navire de combat américain à utiliser en opérations du biocarburant, le destroyer USS Stockdale, a appareillé le mercredi 20 janvier de la base aéronavale de North Island, en Californie.

L’USS Stockdale fait partie du groupe aéronaval déployé autour du porte-avions nucléaire USS John C. Stennis. Celui-ci expérimente le recours aux carburants alternatifs aux énergies fossiles, ce qui inclut l'énergie nucléaire, dans le cadre du programme de l’US Navy baptisé Great Green Fleet (la grande flotte verte).

Le secrétaire à la Marine, Ray Mabus, et le secrétaire à l’Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, ont salué le départ du premier groupe aéronaval « vert » de l’US Navy. Après la cérémonie, ils se sont rendus à bord du destroyer USS William P. Lawrence pour assister à un ravitaillement en mer en biocarburant depuis le pétrolier ravitailleur USNS Guadalupe.

La Marine américaine a annoncé mardi avoir sanctionné trois amiraux dans le cadre d'une affaire de corruption en Asie qui l'ébranle depuis des mois.

Les trois amiraux, qui n'ont pas été poursuivis par la justice dans cette affaire, ont reçu une "lettre de réprimande" de la part du secrétaire à la Marine, Ray Mabus, a annoncé la Marine.

Les lettres de réprimande mettent fin dans les faits aux carrières des officiers.

Les trois amiraux, le contre-amiral Terry Kraft, actuellement commandant des forces navales au Japon, le contre-amiral Michael Miller, en poste à l'école des officiers, et le contre-amiral David Pimpo, chargé de fonctions logistiques, ont été admis à faire valoir leurs droits à la retraite.

Les trois officiers "ont montré une faiblesse de jugement" et n'ont pas été à la hauteur de leurs responsabilités, a estimé M. Mabus dans un communiqué.

Selon la Marine, les officiers ont notamment reçus des cadeaux "inappropriés", et deux d'entre eux ont approuvé des liens avec une entreprise commerciale de manière là aussi "inappropriée".

Le procès des principaux accusés de l'affaire de corruption s'est ouvert début janvier en Californie. Un chef d'entreprise malaisien, surnommé "Fat Leonard", a plaidé coupable d'avoir corrompu des officiers pour obtenir des contrats d'avitaillement de navires américains lors de leurs escales en Asie.

Le patron de Glen Defense Marine Asia a reconnu avoir fourni de l'argent, des services de prostituées ou des mets de luxe pour obtenir les contrats. Selon l'accusation, les sommes en jeu se montent en millions de dollars.

The US Navy has confirmed plans to rename 20 modified littoral combat ships (LCS) as frigates.

US Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said: "It is going to be the same ship, same programme of record, just with an appropriate and traditional name.

"One of the requirements of the small surface combatant task force was to have a ship with frigate-like capabilities.

"Well, if it is like a frigate, why don't we call it a frigate?"

The new designation of the FF label will apply to all LCS that are upgraded with additional weapons, sensors and combat systems such as retrofitted vessels.

However, hull numbers could stay as they are.

Future ships will also be eligible for the new designation, with 32 vessels set to be reclassified if and when they are equipped with additional weapons.

The decision comes as the US Navy retires the last of its legacy frigate vessels, including USS Kauffman, which is on its last deployment.

The navy is also reportedly considering changing the designation of the several other vessels such as joint high-speed vessels, mobile landing platforms and the afloat forward-staging base.

USS GEORGE H. W. BUSH, at sea (NNS) -- The X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System (UCAS) demonstrator completed its first-ever carrier-based arrested landing on board USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) off the coast of Virginia July 10.

"By evolving and integrating new technology like the X-47B and the unmanned aircraft to follow, carriers will remain relevant throughout their 50-year lifespan," said Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus.

Today's demonstration was the first time a tailless, unmanned autonomous aircraft landed on a modern aircraft carrier.

This test marks an historic event for naval aviation that Navy leaders believe will impact the way the Navy integrates manned and unmanned aircraft on the carrier flight deck in the future.

In May 2013, the X-47B successfully completed underway carrier deck operations aboard USS George H. W. Bush to include a first-ever catapult launch and nine touch-and-gos.

"We have certainly come a long way in the 102 years since Eugene Ely made the first arrested landing aboard an aircraft carrier. Naval aviators have always been at the forefront of operational and tactical innovation, and today was no exception," said Mabus. "People make unmanned aviation possible and it is people who will provide the fresh thinking and new ideas so crucial to successes like the X-47B program and the unmanned aircraft of the future."
